  1. I have felt all along that this is was all a ploy to get more cash out of the Yankees. The talk of 30+ million a year, potential partial ownership of the Cubs are all typical Boras crap.
  2. I think the Cubs could have made a series of it, at least 5 or 6 games. It seems to me that the Cubs can rise to the occasion, but take massive dumps versus teams that they are supposed to beat (see Florida, Arizona, etc.). I think it is a motivational issue. There is no real rationale behind this, just my feeling.
  3. You're assuming Dusty doesn't actually believe what he is saying. I am not prepared to make the same assumption.
  4. An educated guess, I'm guessing. Defense is much harder to quantify, but that doesn't mean an approximation can't be made through a combination of observation and the defensive metrics that most people look at. But as Meph said, it wouldn't be entirely scientific. And don't discount the value of a good defensive first baseman. It's not a sexy position, but if you have a poor defender there, the effect will be felt.
  5. Patriots fans are th worst invention ever. Go Indians! I don't mind the Sox, and I like the Patriots simply because I hate the Colts. Being from Indiana I have a soft spot for the colts. Plus, Peyton Manning is just an awesome guy, so I find it hard to dislike them. The sox don't bother me, but I don't like them as much as I used to. As for the patriots...ugh. Tom Brady really needs to get sacked by someone. Hard. And not get up. The QB who needs to be taken out the most is Tony Romo, and it's not even close. And another year without the Yankees or Red Sox in the series is always a good thing. :D Looks like we're headed that way, too.

  7. Dusty will not approve of Dunn's gratuitous base clogging.
  8. Yes, and that's why the Cubs were so heavily favored by nearly everyone to beat the DBacks. The Cubs were not a great team, and were prone fits of ineptitude. But they were also clearly the better team, in nearly every quantifiable category. They played very well down the stretch (with the exception of the Florida series, in which they actually may have been better than the LDS), and hit a ton in September. In retrospect, what happened in the LDS was "Cub-like", and typical. But no one can honestly say they saw it coming. I wasn't confident about the sweep or 3-1 series that a lot of the experts were predicting, and wouldn't have been surprised if they lost. But what the Cubs did was to lay an enormous egg, pure and simple. They played as bad as they had in April/May, perhaps worse. Everything we bitched about the Cubs doing poorly at one point or another, they did all at once. It was really an incredible display, even by Cubs standards. Now it would be easier to believe that those were the "real Cubs", and that I should have expected it. But I really wasn't expecting much at all, not against a team that always seemed to have a knack for bringing out the worst in the Cubs. But what happened was far worse than any reasonable person would have expected. Again, if I were willing to lie to myself, I would go with your theory. It would be much easier to digest.
  9. I don't know if anyone caught it, but on ESPNews yesterday, Keith Law did everything short of call Dusty a terrible manager. He said it was a bad fit, because Dusty hated managing young players, and hated players that walk too much. He said he wouldn't want him near Bailey and Co. He insinuated strongly that what happened to Prior, Wood and even Clement was Baker's doing. He said the only job Baker was suited for was a team full of aged vets on the brink. He went on to lay out the reason that a good manager wouldn't help a team all that much, but a bad manager (and he was clearly talking about Dusty) could cost your team a lot of wins, as well as damage the future of the team (Cubs). Now I don't think a whole lot of Keith Law, and nothing he said was a revelation, but it seemed funny since Baker had just worked for ESPN that an ESPN guy would torch him like that.
  10. Theriot had a .999 OPS in September of 2006. Small sample size. Cedeno had a decent September in 2005 also, and then followed it up with a dud of a season. True, but the difference is that Cedeno has performed at a high level at the MiL level before, and is pretty clearly the more talented of the two. Not that it counts for much, but if I had to put money on either one, it would have to be Cedeno.
  11. Those were the real Chicago Cubs. No, those weren't. No kidding. The Cubs sure aren't the '27 Yanks, but what they showed in the LDS was pitiful, and certainly not what they had been for most of the season. Arizona was exposed by Colorado the same way they should have been exposed by the Cubs. It would make me feel much better if I could believe that Arizona was the better team and the Cubs were simply beaten, but I would be lying to myself.
  12. Plus it will dull the pain of the next few seasons.
  13. You summed it up. Outside of July, he was Neifi Perez without the glove.
  14. The DBacks did their best Cubs imitation tonight.
  15. Compared to what we're getting from Theriot? I like the riot, but he just didn't bring his game consistently this year. He had a great month when we were hot, and he was definitely a spark then. If Soriano continues to lead off, DeRosa should be hitting 2nd, not 5th/6th. That's why we need to figure out a decent option for RF who can hit in the middle of the order. Cedeno will not hurt us hitting 8th behing Soto. I think the consensus is that neither are good enough, and that we need to go outside the system for a SS. But if it comes down to Theriot vs. Cedeno, I'd go with Ronny. Ryan was just awful for the last 2 months of the season.
  16. If the Cubs replaced their 2007 SS production with a Renteria or Tejada level of production, I don't think they'd need improvement from Soriano and Lee to be among the best NL teams next year. The CF, RF and C situations would need to be stabilized though. I think adding Renteria to the current offense would help a great deal. Also, I think that while you might not get much of a boost OPS-wise from Lee and Soriano, the Cubs will get more home runs and RBI from Lee, and benefit from Soriano not missing a month. And while I am not counting on it, I think Soto will provide a significant boost to the production from the catcher position. RF is something else. Most of me wants to see Murton given the job, but part of me isn't so sure. I'd like to see some guaranteed production there so Pie can be given the CF job without compromising the offense too much. I'm confident Matt can do the job, but not convinced. Pat Burrell intrigues me, but adding both he and Edgar isn't at all likely.
  17. Yeah, there really is no argument here at all. I think that Theriot's popularity is obscuring reality for some.
  18. This hurt because the Cubs should have won. 2003 was devastating because the Cubs had it won.
  19. I was sick after the DeRo gidp. Being a long time Cubs fan, I have already reached acceptance.
  20. Start with Valverde. I know he is in the pen, but that frothing bug-eyed ape needs to be neutered by a baseball.
  21. Drew needs to have something unfortunate happen to him. Preferably involving a grizzly bear.
  22. Not with the ownership situation. Couldn't the next regime install a new GM as soon as they take over?
