What? Hitting ball with authority is about the best you can hope for. The batter doesn't have that much control over direction and vector, I'm sorry to say. Against a pitcher like Webb, there is something to be said for stinging the ball. -
He was just over-amped and couldn't command his slider at all at first, allowing Reynolds to sit on a heater. That was why I was hoping Carlos could work his butterflies out in a situation other than a late inning tie game.

What made you think this? His command was iffy, and there were quite a few stung balls off of him. When Webb has his A game, the other team just pounds the ball into the ground all game. That wasn't the case tonight. He was good, but he wasn't totally on top of it.

Yeah, the Cubs really roped quite a few balls tonight. It was the Devil's luck for the DBacks, but you can't complain. That's how it goes.

On a related note, I think I can understand what the fans of other teams feel about Zambrano when I see Valverde pitch. I'd really like to kick Papa Grande in his huevos.

Well, that was teh suck. But to tell you the truth, it was a game I kind of expected the Cubs to lose, but it was a game we could have easily had. The Cubs actually hit the ball hard a lot, but right at people. But, that's baseball. IMO, taking Z out was a bad move, but not a horrible one. I would have let him go one more in a tight game, but can't totally fault Lou for pulling him. However, I would have preferred Marmol work out his butterflies with some margin for error. I probably would have gone to Howry first. I really believe the Cubs take the next three games.

GAH My stomach is doing that late inning-high-stress thing and the game hasn't even started yet. If the Cubs make it to the series it may kill me.

I wouldn't say it's my worst nightmare, but I do fear that happening. I more than fear it...I'm resigned to the FACT it will happen. And SD seems like a likely place. I still think he will be our #5 next year, though. -

Why? They aren't that good. That may be true, but this is a no contest on paper. Arizona is dead last in the NL in AVG and OBP, and 14th in Runs scored and 13th in OPS. The Cubs' team AVG is almost 20 points higher, as is their OPS. The Cubs team ERA is lower, runs allowed lower and strikeouts higher. Their OPS allowed is much lower. The bullpen ERA and OPS allowed are both well lower, and strikeouts much higher. That may not be worth much, but it really isn't hard to see why the Cubs are favored when you compare rosters and stats. Statistically speaking the Cubs have better pitching and hitting and virtually equal fielding. Having said that, I would not be the least bit surprised to see the Cubs lose. Nor would I be surprised to see the Cubs sweep. -
X2 And being as objective as I can possibly be, I think this signals the beginning of 3-5 years of non-contention for STL. That is unless they can land another really good GM. This almost certainly spells the end of LaRussa as Cardinals manager, and though he is reviled by many, you can't ignore how good a job he has done. How he kept that team in contention as long as he did this year is beyond me. Jocketty leaving likely means LaRussa leaving, which likely means Duncan leaving. Bad news for Cards fans.

If the Cubs make it, I'll be content to fly up to Chicago and hang out in Wrigleyville. Just for the atmosphere. I'd never forgive myself If the Cubs finally won it all and I was over 1000 miles away. -
I could see limited use of replay, like on fair/foul and home run calls, and probably fan interference. No way could it be extended to balls/strikes, double plays or checked swings. I would like to see it on some safe/out calls (especially egregious ones like that Froemming call at first in the Pads/Crew series), but the evidence would have to be indisputable. Even then, it would be hard to keep managers from going to it constantly, unless like Banedon said, they get only one challenge per game. And I don't think it would slow the game down any more than a typical managerial tirade.

That was awesome, as EY is pimping the DBacks' pitching, the graphic on the side is displaying the pitching numbers for both teams, which clearly favor the Cubs.

I liked the signing when it happened, and I love it now. I love DeRo more every time he says something. He talks the right way, he plays the right way. DeRo is awesome.

Aramis is a better hitter and fielder now than he was in 2003. And I hate to say it, but Gonzalez was a better hitter (and that's not saying much) than Theriot is right now, and he was a much better fielder. At least Ryan is hard to K.

After Marquis (who has 2 years remaining on his contract) harped about being left off the Cardinals playoff roster last year, why is anyone surprised at this? Right or wrong, there was no way he was being left off the roster.

Is there any chance that this actually happens? (I don't mean this to come off as an insult. This is a genuine question.) Yeah, there is. But it's much more likely Hendry trades Pie for Tejada and then signs Torii Hunter. I don't know, with the payroll increase the would come with adding Tejada and Hunter, you could have ARod for marginally more. And with the offensive boost that ARod would bring, Pie could get his shot with minimal risk. Tejada is declining, and I don't think Hunter's 2007 numbers are at all indicative of his future production.

Which is why I would have gone with Monroe over Fontenot. Both have been bad, but Monroe at least has the legitimate threat of power.

Better pitching in 2003, better offense in 2007. Probably a better pen overall in 2007. Deeper, at least. Much better manager now.

Yeah, neither are good, but I'd have definitely chosen Monroe over Fontenot. There shouldn't be too much of an impact, however.

I can't, only because I've had a gigantic man-crush on DeRo since the 2nd week of April and little short of a walk-off, playoff-series-winning hit would make it any bigger. DeRo is awesome. I laugh when I think about all the crap that was talked about his signing.
