  1. People emotionally say bombastic things after games like this, but people pretty much have to be fired over this, right? This has got to be the final straw.
  2. He should have been fired during the offseason, so any time would be great.
  3. Might as well not even send the defense out there.
  4. No, just north of .800, iirc, about .100 less than Rizzo.
  5. That's not at all surprising, and I think that trading for a SP should definitely be the fallback plan to signing one or more of these FAs.
  6. I think Martin will get a high AAV, but not five years. A few of the national media types I have heard speculate have said three years, and given his age and position that seems right. Maybe three guaranteed with a couple of mutual options.
  7. No he didn't. He struggled way, way worse than anyone feared. Eh I expected awful and a lot of K's for a while. I didn't really have a particular degree in mind. Was hopeful that he'd show signs of life by the end of the season but it's not enough to get me anywhere near giving up on a massively talented 21 year old middle infielder. ride that stallion until it bucks you or it does whatever is a good outcome when riding a stallion. Yeah, his 40%+ strikeout rate performance was on the "bad" end of my expectation spectrum, but it was something I definitely saw as a possibility. And I doubt I am alone in that. And while I am not particularly optimistic about his future, I'm far from ready to give up on him.
  8. After last season, I think they could get something for Kemp, if they eat some of his salary. I suppose it depends if you buy into his shoulder got better and he is the 2nd half version. In that scenario though, why eat the money? Just play Kemp if you're the dodgers. I find it interesting how often Alcantara's name is thrown around. I would think his potential is worth more than he is in trade value. Probably true of Baez too. High-risk, high reward types at the upper levels don't seem like good trade bait - definitely I would think for Alcantara he may turn out to be a much better player than people expect. Obviously there are others you'd like to deal first, but if it comes down to Kemp or Puig, I can't imagine they'd deal the latter first. I know there are "character" concerns, but he's younger, cheaper and better.
  9. Sports talk radio has been dead to me for a decade plus because I felt like it was predominantly ignorant, meatball-y, bombastic blowhards, so it makes sense that I wasn't familiar. And if Russo is popular enough to have his own radio channel, I think my assessment was probably right.
  10. After last season, I think they could get something for Kemp, if they eat some of his salary.
  11. And I think that's really dumb. You can think that, and I'm not saying I agree with it. But they have repeatedly said "we don't have to get all out starting pitching in one offseason" or something similar. I don't agree with holding back to wait for a particular player who may or may not be available, but unless there is a wave of extensions, next offseason's FA SP pool is going to be really deep. I just think Price is going to be the guy.
  12. I don't know where MLB Network dug up this clown Christopher Russo, but they need to send him back. What a spastic [expletive].
  13. I also think they're not going to blow the wad on multiple SP this offseason because they're planning at taking a run at Price next offseason, if he's available. I thought that before Maddon was hired, and feel more that way now.
  14. I like the Cubs' chances to sign Lester, but I really don't think they will even seriously pursue Scherzer. I can't say why I think that, though. I think both is a pipe dream, and not just because PTR. Signing the top two FA SP would be a tall order for any team with any budget. Lester and one of the second tier guys, maybe even Lester & Shields or Hamels via trade, but not Scherzer.
  15. I really wouldn't mind seeing him brought on in some coaching capacity, but I have no idea if he or Maddon would have any interest in that.
  16. Eh, it was a pretty goofy press conference. It was fun from our standpoint, but the general commentary about it from outside was amusement or mocking because it/he WAS pretty goofy. It was goofy, but I've heard a lot of national media types saying that Maddon killed it in addition to being irreverent. The only segment I've heard just dumping on Maddon over it has been Cardinals fans.
  17. I don't feel smug about the Cubs hiring Maddon, I just like how they went from "Maddon for manager, Matheny for bench coach!" to "Look at his hair, he's so beneath us" in the space of a few days. And they're usually a pretty level headed lot over at GRB.
  18. Paul Molitor looks like hell.
  19. Yeah, that's what I have always thought.
  20. Yeah, I was over at GRB and saw a poster say he wouldn't want any manager as unkempt as Maddon was yesterday, that it was reflective of messy thinking or some such nonsense, and that it would be beneath the Cards. I don't know if it was sarcasm, but I literally laughed out loud.
  21. There were quite a few fans of other teams who, in the immediate wake of Maddon opting out, wanted him to replace their guy (many Cards fans, most notably). Now they are going on about how Maddon is overrated, managers don't make much difference (there is some truth to this) and how the Cubs and Maddon are unscrupulous for doing Renteria dirty. This is totally predictable "sour grapes" behavior that some of us would no doubt be guilty of if the shoe were on the other foot, but it's still funny.
  22. Nah. He just spent years at the one place that's actually worse. And Wrigley is in the process of getting a lot better, so he won't have to suffer with many of its shortcomings for long. That presser was brilliant. That Maddon is intelligent, articulate and seemingly insightful is a welcome departure from recent managers. Not hearing a bunch of tired, predictable baseball tropes was really refreshing.
  23. Good luck with that, Marlins. No doubt that's lip service for the five Marlins fans. They have almost no shot to re-sign him (or intent to offer him anywhere near market value), and will almost certainly be fielding offers at the winter meetings.
  24. Well, yeah, it's "we said/they said", but The Cubs FO put forth their version of events, Maddon's agent corroborated that account, and we've heard nothing from MLB that contradicts any of it. All that's come from/about the other side is the suggestion that there's vague suspicion of tampering (unless I've missed something, TB hasn't leveled any detailed allegations). That, combined with the account of the TB front office themselves bringing attention to the opt out clause, and Nero's statement about TB making only flimsy offers (what I infer from that is that the Rays weren't really all that hot to keep him around), it's hard to imagine anything at all will come of this.
  25. I don't really agree with that second part. If Maddon didn't have an opt out and the Cubs played well in 2015 under Renteria, he probably would have been here for the long haul. I doubt Theo planned on hiring 3 managers before his first contract is up. Pretty much this.
