  1. Yeah. Carpenter is getting hit pretty hard today, not that you can tell.
  2. If a heated race to land Halladay starts up, I'm not sure the Cards could put together a competitive offer even with Rasmus included. J.P. is probably going to want quality player(s) to plug in at 1B, SS or 3B. STL can't really offer that. I disagree Rasmus is a starting point. Before today's game he had the 11th highest WAR for position players in the NL. Not that it will happen, but Rasmus alone is more than enough to get the deal done. Agreed. Rasmus and a lower level prospect for Halladay is well more than enough. I don't think people actually comprehend how good Rasmus is, in his rookie season at 22 years of age. I wouldn't even think about trading Rasmus for any pitcher, but I would trade Wallace, Daryl Hones and anyone else they wanted in the minors for Halladay. Toronto drafted Wallace back in 2005 (But he went to college instead), so they would definitely seem to be interested in him. You guys are crazy Cardinal fans. They have Vernon Wells who is better than Rasmus right now and Rasmus is nowhere near the value of Doc, nor will he ever be. If anyone thinks Colby Rasmus alone or as the centerpiece will net Roy Halladay, they are freaking nuts. What you are talking about is the best pitcher in the game (arguably), with another year on his contract, in a thin SP market. Several teams could, would and will blow an offer of Rasmus alone out of the water. Hell, teams will offer more than Rasmus and Wallace.
  3. If true, moneterily, the only NL teams I could see swinging it are the Phillies, Mets, and maybe the Dodgers. Wells contract is a mess and a half and I cant see the Cards or Brewers having the finances for it. Pretty much. If taking Wells is a condition for getting Halladay, the Cards and Crew can just forget it. Wells' contract is massively back loaded. Vernon just isn't that good, and that contract could really cripple a mid/small market teams financial flexibility. Asking a team to take that on might be asking too much, IMO.

  5. Uh. no. An established 50+ HR hitter and the top two prospects that are very highly touted in all of baseball. Replace Prince with J.J. Hardy and I think we're closer. I don't think so. Hardy has really stunk this year. Prince is the obvious target, and a fair one, considering. Plus I said Gamel or Escobar, not both.
  6. Yea I agree that it would be hard for Stl to trade Rasmus right now, but it shouldnt be "easy" to obtain a guy like Halladay. Brett Wallace is nice, but again if Im the Jays, its Rasmus or no deal. As thin as the SP market is and considering Halladay is arguably the best starter in the game with time left on his contract, a guy like Rasmus would just be the starting point. I sincerely doubt anyone is getting him without giving up young, quality MLB talent. To give an idea, I think a team like the Brewers would have to give up Prince + Gamel or Escobar and some throw-ins. J.P. Ricciardi is squarely in the driver's seat here.
  7. Fielder has a couple more years, iirc. I was thinking more of building a package around Prince, Hardy and maybe Hart and trying to pry Halladay from Toronto. If they have any decent pitching prospects I think they'd have a chance.
  8. Me too. Melvin can say what he wants, but he's not getting a difference making pitcher in this market w/o dealing one or both of his untouchables. If I were Melvin, I'd probably dangle Prince and J.J. and try and land a great young starter with years left on his contract. He could then plug in Gamel at first and Escobar at SS. It might not pay off so much this year, but Prince is gone when his contract is up anyway, and they really need the pitching. If he trades one or both of his two real trading chips for a guy like Vazquez, then he isn't doing his job very well.
  9. Melvin needs to realize that if hes going to get any kind of good starter, hes going to have to offer up one of his 2 prized pigs. Other teams know how much the Brewers need pitching, and they're not going to make it that easy. Corey Hart might get them something, but not as much. Hart might have netted them a front end starter a year or two ago, but it's looking like isn't the player many thought he was. Atlanta has all the leverage here, so if I'm Wren I'm asking for Hart and one of Escobar/Gamel.
  10. If there are any powder kegs in Wrigley, someone better get them out of there.
  11. Not what I said, and you know it. If you refer back to page three you'll see that I said "making yourself look worse." Stop making things up. Again with the childlike retorts. i strongly suggest you do what most people do and just put dexter on your foe list. if you have me on ignore and you can't even see my posts in this thread, then perhaps you shouldn't be commenting on the conversation. just sayin He can see them if someone else quotes them, I think.
  12. It should only be expected from people who don't really know anything about stats. What a dumb statement. I'm not some idiot that thinks RBI's and Runs scored are the important stats. Don't respond to my posts assuming so. What I, very clearly, stated, was that while other stats certainly mean a whole lot more when evaluating a player... when discussing player A, the former Cub was traded to make room for player B, their run producing stats are absolutely fair game for conversation. Ugh. No they're not. They play in completely different lineups. You just don't get it. RBIs are a worthless stat to look at when determing whop has been a better hitter. RBIs are as much about luck and lineup positiomning as they are about actually performance. Nobody is saying the RBIs themselves don't matter. But to use them to compare playuers is dumb, yeah. You should be using rate stats and stuff like that. Thing that a player... you know.... actually controls. I'll say this again. James Loney has 49 RBI's and has a .732 OPS. Do you understand that Loney has more RBIs than many many players who have been much better than him this season? So is run driven in % fair game? Or is it all about OBP/SLG and nothing else in your eyes? There is literally a laundry list of stats that are better indicators.
  13. Give credit for him signing Derosa? Well, perhaps if he were: A: Still a Cub B: Wasn't traded for marginal prospects C: Not playing for the Cardinals DeRosa is not a good example. When DeRosa was signed he was considered a risk considering he really never played everyday for a full year. DeRosa went on to have a pretty decent season and then a career year for the Cubs and played a big role in both divison titles. They sold high on a 34 year old Middle Infielder, something you rarley can do. DeRosa OPS'd .857 last year. There was no way he was going to do that again. DeRosa also got helped out by leading the league in "lucky" home runs last year with 8. Look DeRosa is a good player, however he is not a superstar. He is below avg. defensivly basically everywhere you up put him. The biggest reason why the Cubs are struggling this year IMO is your bullpen and the loss of A-Ram. To blame this all on Hendry just seems like a scape goat. The fact is they have a bunch of players underachiving... Soriano, Bradley, Marmol, Harden, Gregg and Soto just to name a few. And then take out the Cubs best player (Aramis) and you end up being 2 games under .500. But lucky for the Cubs (and brewers) its the NL Central. You still have a really good starting rotation. And for how bad and under achving the cubs have been they are still only 3.5 games back. please explain to me what a lucky home run is, it sounds so moronic that maybe im just to smart to understand A homer that barely clears the fence. There are other criteria, I think. I think hittracker or some such place keeps track of them.
  14. Definitely. Wasn't Jimbo the director of the farm system at one point? For a brief period when the Cubs system was ranked near the top? Yeah, let's get a new GM and let him do that again.
  15. It sucks, but as bad as the Cubs are right now, I still think they have as good a shot as any to win this pitiful division.
  16. That article is hilarious. Phil Rogers has taken Jay Mariotti's role of "Sensationalistic journalism" and made it his own now. Yes lets give away Zambrano at the low point of his value, that will sure improve this team, Phil. Phil Rogers is an idiot, and my eyes bled from reading that blog. This isn't the low point of his value, but it's a stupid idea anyway. If Hendry wanted to give Z away, there would be 29 GMs blowing up his phone.
  17. The only solace I take is knowing he hates wearing that.
  18. Really? Carpenter is far better than any pitcher on the Cubs Wainwright is as good as any pitcher on the Cubs Pineiro isn't as good, but is pitched as well as any pitcher on the Cubs Lohse is hurt, but he's a a solid 3rd, good 4th starter Wainwright would have the 4th best ERA on the Cubs. Carpenter would have the best ERA, but he's pitched a grand total of 65 innings. ow has Piniero pitched as well as any starter on the Cubs? Lshe is hurt? Go back to St. Louis. Carpenter's resume is solidified. Nobody on your staff is even close Wainwright over the last 3 seasons has been as good as any Cub starter, and this year he'd be second in VORP on the Cubs behind Lilly, who he is a much better pitcher than. Lilly is basically Kyle Lohse with a few more Ks, but more walks. I didn't say Pineiro was a good pitcher, but he's having a very good season. You worry about Ks, I worry about HRs and BBs. And he's given up 12 walks in 92 innings. That's great. And he's given up 2 home runs. It wont last, but that's not what I argued. Carp >>>>>>>> Zambrano Wainwright > Harden (Should he even count? He doesn't even pitch and when he does, he's awful). Lilly = Lohse Dempster > Pineiro, but that's not saying much Randy Wells? Marshall vs. Brad Thompson. Whatever, they all suck. Go to sleep. If every one of these guys is in top form and on the top of their game Z=Carp Harden>Wainwright Lilly>Lohse Dempster>Piniero Wells/Marshall>The number 5 starter carousel equivelent of Blanco/Miles/Freel. Don't bother. He won't listen, and saying that the Cards rotation is better than the Cubs isn't going to get any support outside of the STL anyway.
  19. not remotely True, but Jim literally made all the wrong moves this year. Everything he did has backfired. And these were pretty much all moves that looked sketchy at the time they were made, as well.
  20. The bottom line is that he has to stop walking guys. Sure, Sori f'ed up, but Marmol had already put himself in a bad position.
  21. I'm far more bothered by Aramis' cockfighting than Geo's ganja smoking. I'd be more upset if he got caught drunk driving. Players do things that are a lot worse than getting high occasionally.
  22. Yeah, at the very least there should be separate forums for the "local" teams (other than the Sox). I think since there is a majority of fans for those teams (Bears/Bulls/Illini) on this board, it can be a bit frustrating for fans of other teams to deal with the "general" sports threads. I am an Illini fan, but some of the Illini fans here are intolerable homers. The same goes for the Bears.
  23. Maybe its because he looks like he's drunk out there.
