    Because prattling on about things you have no real grasp of without knowledge of their factual elements is quintessentially American. I am more concerned about how many people buy into it, which they obviously do, or jokers like Rogers wouldn't have a job.

    "Beefing up" indicates improvement. If you're a 110 lb. weakling who works out and becomes a 160 lb. average guy, you have beefed up. Adding another 20 pounds would be beefing up "even more". If you're going to take issue with semantics, do it right.

    i'd be fine with them doing this even if it meant eating half his salary in the deal. That's probably what it would take, if he has a good year in 2010. If he doesn't improve, we're stuck with him.

    I think they're gonna hang on to him. He's been decent since he took over. If there is a GM spot opening, I suspect Rizzo would take that job to take a "lesser role" with Washington. Personally, I think Washington should have kept Rizzo, but.... would you like to try this post again No. Neither would I. Not everyday you can lay claim to the most nonsensical post in NSBB history.

    I just think it would be more productive to have him help the pen than waste starts on him. Despite the sample size, he is an aging power pitcher coming off injury. His splits are in line with what you might logically expect. In this case his splits - as small a sample size as they come from - may well be a good indicator. I suspect he just can't maintain his stuff for more than an inning or two. He hasn't thrown many inning the past couple years, and even in his last full season he was 5-6 inning guy. He has been rocked this year, and consistently worse the deeper he got into games. The Sox didn't release him and eat money for no reason. If it were the Cubs signing him, I would want them to use him in a role where he could maximize what he has left in the tank - which I suspect isn't much. But as bad as the Cubs are right now, I suppose giving away the 2-3 games he starts is worth seeing if you can catch lightning in a bottle, eh?

    Wellemeyer was more effective. Smoltz has been horrendous as a starter, and his splits scream for him to be used in the pen. The Cards could call up just about any AAA SP and have him pitch (probably better) as well as Smoltz has. If Mo and TLR want to waste starts, let them.

    If the Cards keep him starting, they'll regret it. He has been moderately effective early in games, but goes from bad to horrendous as he gets deeper. The only value he has is as a reliever. As a starter, Wellemeyer would be better. Much better.

    Someone in the crowd at Wrigley dumping a beer on a player or throwing something at them as that player is about to make or is making a play? Please list some of the "many, many" times this has happened. Weird that I remember this, but the first time I seen the beer dump I was about 7 or 8 years old. Somebody dumped a beer on Brian Jordan of the Cardinals during a day game at a play by the wall. IIRC, he got really pissed too. Of course he got pissed. It's a trash thing to do.

Please list some of the "many, many" times this has happened. No list, but the beer dump is nothing new. On a player as they are making a play? Yes. I particularly remember seeing this happen to Lenny Dysktra (insert joke about how he deserved it) during the 8-8-88 game (at least in that series). I don't have enough fingers and toes to count all the times I have seen beer dumped on an opposing OF'er in the middle or end of a catch at the wall.

    It's a huge contract but he's worth every penny. Not really. He is 32, and his splits are heavily weighted toward home. He's having a great year this year, but his numbers in 2007 and 2008 were decidedly poor for someone getting paid like he is. He also is particularly bad in day games.

    Someone is going to pay Mark more than he's worth. I would have loved to have him as a Cub in 2009, but it's just not going to be worth it going forward.

    Wrigley's walls are high, and it is pretty long down the lines as well. I believe at one point they had the longest foul lines in the majors. If they aren't still, I'd be surprised. It's odd how much of a "hitters park" Wrigley was when I was a kid. With all the new, smaller stadiums, Wrigley is now neutral or a slight pitcher's park, I'd guess. Wrigley is still a hitters park. Yes, but not extremely so. In the past few years, it has been as high as 2nd and as low as 15th in park factor (runs allowed). It is consistently outside the top 5 in HR allowed. Not that these things are very reliable. This year, the Marlins' stadium is surrendering more homers than Wrigley. The whole "Wrigley is a hitter's haven" thing is overblown. It is a hitter's park, but it is no band box.
