  1. I want to be happy the Pats lost, but the Jets are just too despicable right now. What a collection of punks, especially Ryan. I hope the Steelers just murder them.
  2. Because right or wrong, most fans still judge players based on actual on-field results. And Wells didn't produce very good results last year. He was also very uneven with his performances, having decent starts followed up by getting tagged in the first inning which added up to meh results with good peripherals. Not going to endear yourself to the fans very much when you take that path to your results. Agreed. I'm not trying to say Wells was good. He was solid, but inconsistent, and with fans, I understand their frustration with that. I'm thrilled with anything positive we get out of him. I am always waiting for him to turn into a pumpkin.
  3. It's feast or famine a lot of the time. Some days it plays like a band box, others like the Polo Grounds. There is a misconception the Wrigley is just a homer haven.
  4. We've basically traded Lee for Pena and Lilly for Garza, and we're somehow going to win 90 games this year? I wouldn't be shocked if the Cubs win 90+. I wouldn't be surprised if they win 75, either.
  5. No, not many people think he's worthless. No one is saying that. The problem is that people are afraid that Hendry & Co. view him as a cornerstone when he's just a role player. Tyler Colvin isn't horrible, he's just not as good as a lot of people think. Unfortunately, some of those people seem to be the most important ones.
  6. Like this move a lot. Just replaced Chirinos and then some. But it just reminds me how vexed I am that the Cubs retained Hill.
  7. let me give you a spoiler on point #2 - guzman will not stay healthy. grabow is mediocre and caridad is no better. Grabow can be decent. Not worth his salary, but decent.
  8. Number one, I am among those perplexed at how people think this is a "win in 2011" move. We have the guy for at least three seasons, and we'll have money to spend (hopefully on Fielder, etc.) after 2011. This move will have just as much impact on 2012 and 2013 as 2011. Secondly, one theme I've noticed is that many people are of the opinion that what we saw out of ARam and Pena last year is what we can expect going forward. Now ARam is exiting his prime years, but last year was a fluke, and he proved it in the second half. He and Pena battled injuries for much of last season., and I don't think either is nearly as bad as they were last year. Some may be too optimistic regarding the Cubs ability to compete, but far too many people are writing the Cubs off in 2011 based on false perceptions. If Castro doesn't regress and ARam and Pena have even average seasons, I don't see how the Cubs are much worse then the Cards, Crew or Reds. Having said that,I think the season hinges on Big Z's performance. If he pitches in between what he was in the second and first halves, we'll have the deepest, though not the most top heavy, rotation in the division.
  9. The system isn't gutted by any means. Archer and Lee were the only two prospects of significance, and Lee is a long way away.
  10. I don't much like losing Lee, but the only one on the list who makes me cringe is Archer. Guyer, Fuld and Chirinos are filler. Still, this makes the staff appreciably better for the next few years. Also, don't forget Pena had plantar faciitis most of last year. I predict some measure of improvement on that alone.
  11. well, if this isnt the most racist post of 2011 just for context, I first read this story on Yahoo. The comments that came with the story would make eriks statement really tame Why would you read comments on Yahoo? Yahoo commenters are some of the stupidest people on the planet. Comments sections on most sites are cesspools. If you want to feel really, really bad about society, reading those is a good way to get there.
  12. This. Otto is just awful. I mean Joe Carter was even better than Otto, and Carter was abysmal. I don't listen to the radio much, but I'd rather watch Gamecast or listen to the other team's guys than Dave Otto.
  13. Safeco didn't help him, either. 3 of the 5 years he was there, we was pretty good, but he hits a lot of fly balls. His LD% was right around his norms (above his career avg 2 of the years) while in Seattle as well. He's not the 10 WAR player he was in 2004, but his rate stats suggest his walk years aren't quite the outliers they appear to be. I can easily see him putting up some numbers in Texas.
  14. Now that was an encouraging win. Dominated the paint and the perimeter, hit their open shots, slashed to the bucket well, passed well. Lost focus a couple times (after the initial three point burst and Leonard's dunks), but pulled it back together really quickly. Really balanced, overall. Having said that, NU was sleepwalking. This was their third game in six days, and they looked like it. It was probably a combo of tired legs and lack of effort, but NU is a better team than they showed tonight.
  15. Oh, I don't think it would work, or that it is a good idea. Just speculating as to why they would make such an over the top offer.
  16. They probably want to make headlines, in part to get the fans going and fix that attendance problem they had late in the year. And in part because they'll likely have to blow away the 49ers offer to get him to Miami.
  17. Where would he get ABs with us? I think he's being sarcastic. I hope so, though it's hard to tell with some people.
  18. LOL, seriously?
  19. This salvages a shred of dignity for the B10, but I'm not sure any gloating is in order, maybe for the next few years. Yeah, I don't think we have any reason to gloat. They went 3-5. It's not the rest of our faults that Michigan and MSU aren't legitimate programs. True. I saw MSU getting blown out from the moment I saw the matchup. I also think NU wins it's game if Persa is playing, for sure. But New Year's Day was a dark one regardless.
  20. Shades of the Alabama game.
  21. This salvages a shred of dignity for the B10, but I'm not sure any gloating is in order, maybe for the next few years.
  22. Well, that was a roller coaster finish.
  23. Not a good day for the Big 10. Good day for non-AQs, Wisconsin is no joke.
