  1. Not interesting at all. Ricketts is the owner and I'm sure he has to convince Theo on his plans and direction of the team. That part is done. It's interesting Ricketts is handling the compensation issue.
  2. We should really bring back the hottest woman contests. Nah. It gave Vance an outlet, but takes away time that I could otherwise be spending looking at actual porn.
  3. I vaguely remember someone once saying this was a family board. I'm setting some really disturbing visuals from this thread.
  4. Not to put water on the fire, but anyone who doesn't know JD Drew was a really good player is kind of a baseball idiot. That he was defending Drew isn't the point. It was the basis of his defense. Can you recall a Cubs GM or coach who would have assessed players that way? No, I thought not.
  5. This really helps me respect Ricketts as a shrewd businessman. I would have expected in the past that opportunities like this would simply be ignored. It seems Ricketts understood the situation and how he could use it his advantage, and then actually did so. My faith in Tom is now growing. Again, as important as the progressive nature of Theo's philosophy is Ricketts' recognition of the importance of consistency and continuity. I openly bristled at the "I don't need baseball men overseeing my baseball men" comment, but now I'm looking at it in a completely different light. Giving Theo full authority over baseball operations is going to have a lot more import than simply bringing in a sharp mind.
  6. Remember when we thought Quade vs. Kaplan was awesome? It's funny because Kaplan thinks Theo's awesome, but he clearly has no idea why he does. When he realizes what Theo is really about, his head will explode.
  7. I don't know if it's been mentioned, but after more info has come out today you begin to realize that Ricketts has/had huge leverage in this situation (whether he realized it or not). Apparently Theo told Henry he wouldn't be GM beyond next year. That being the case, the Sox were left in the position of letting their lame duck GM leave or risk Ricketts taking his heir apparent in Cherington, leaving them with neither after 2012. That being the case, letting Theo go was/is the prudent thing to do.
  8. Someone stuck in/loyal to old ways and opposed to/afraid of progress and change.
  9. NSBB may be in store for a renaissance.
  10. Jesus [expletive] Christ. ... I'm going to give this man so many babies. Yeah, he's gonna be a [expletive] revelation. And of course many Cubs fans are going to be put off by his forward thinking approach, but they can all [expletive] off. You listen to something like that and then reflect on the disjointed, multiple personality disorder mess that has been Cubs management for all of recent memory, and you begin to realize just how big this has the potential to be. For the first time in god knows how long, a legitimate, distilled organizational philosophy. And whether you agree with the nature of that philosophy (i.e. you are a miserable luddite), you must recognize how important the consistency that will come with it is. How this will all pan out remains to be seen, but this is a really exciting time to be a Cubs fan.
  11. I love Paul Sullivan on SC being a total pud and giving lazy answers.
  12. That seems a likely move, given the apparent restrictions on bringing along his current guys.
  13. at least one person in this thread has said that getting epstein could be more important than signing fielder or pujols, and everyone seems to agree that a good GM is really important, much more so than a manager. so why is it unreasonable for the red sox to ask for cashner when the marlins just gave up two of their top 5 prospects (coming into 2011, though their stock had slipped) for a lousy manager, and tampa gave up randy winn coming off a 5 win season to get piniella? It isn't, really. We might have an immediate aversion to giving up a guy like Cashner, but when you take a step back, you'd have to say it'd be more than worth it. We're not talking about guys like Castro or Garza, but guys like Cashner and Vitters, who have warts and may or may not end up being anything. And with Epstein, we're talking about a real organizational and cultural shift, something that will have sweeping positive implication. Is a guy like Cashner worth missing a shot at that? Of course it isn't.
  14. What makes it such a likely choice? And what evidence do we have that Theo believes he could turn Sandberg into an extension of the front office? Because Ryno wants the job, Cubs fans (most of them) want Ryno to have the job and Theo apparently likes him as a managerial material (he tried to hire him as the AAA manager)? And I used the caveat "unless he has someone in mind". Listen, I don't want to see Sandberg as manager one bit, but if I had to handicap the field, I'd put Ryno as the favorite. Not to get too far off this awesome threads track, but why is Ryno not wanted by many here? Seriously now, other than win, what's the problem? He's too hardline old school. To a fault.
  15. What makes it such a likely choice? And what evidence do we have that Theo believes he could turn Sandberg into an extension of the front office? 16. Multiple outlets, eh? No not really just multiple outlets quoting the same stupid line about Theo wanting Sandberg for a minor league job. For some reason that equates to him wanting Sandberg for the major league one. Because it makes for nice publicity I guess. just because you want something to be true doesn't make it so. I don't want to see it happen, but it makes more sense than you're apparently seeing. Unless Theo has someone else particular in mind, it seems like the likely choice. Theo apparently likes him, and might see him as a guy who he can make an extension of the front office.
  17. If not being able to bring in his own guys would be an issue for Theo, how about his ex-guys? Would Josh Byrnes be amenable to another assistant GM position or a lateral move to VP of baseball operations for the Cubs? Would Theo want him?
  18. Most of the Boston roster is set, so there's not much Theo could do to fix anything. Theo apparently wants more authority, which would mean stepping on Lucchino's toes. There is a ready made replacement in Cherington waiting in the wings to replace Epstein, who by account has been stressed out in Boston and whose contract is up after 2012 anyway. Why exactly would shuffling the deck to retain Theo be so smart?
  19. I wouldn't be too upset, in my mind this shows that Ricketts is serious about his search for a stats guy and what not. I believe that we get out of this with a good GM regardless of who it is. I'd like to say that, but as far along as it is at this point, I'd be pretty pissed off. Not full of rage at Theo or anything, but just frustrated and disappointed.
  20. He'll want his own guy, and Sandberg is a Chicago icon. It's not a lock, but it's hardly a stretch.
  21. Sandberg would be a minor annoyance at worst. The important thing is having a guy who can construct a proper roster. Plus, adding Epstein and Sandberg would all but guarantee 81 sellouts in 2012, and likely beyond.
  22. When it is official, plz.
  23. It's funny that this is the biggest bit of actual news in the whole process and posting has come to halt.
  24. Then it's either really legit or the biggest jinx of all time.
  25. We'll see. It's not as exciting as the day Hendry was fired. Maybe that will change when an announcement is made. But that one will be hard to beat. This would be way better than Hendry getting canned. That was nice, but this would be the fulfillment of the promise of that day, when names like Ned Colletti were being tossed around. I never thought then that Epstein was a real possibility.
