  1. I'm pretty sure steroids don't make you more patient. Hitting 1.5-2x as many home runs might, though. And you won't hit all those homers without managing the strike zone. There was more in play with Sosa than steroids, but let's not derail here.

  3. Maybe he will when he doesn't play part of a baseball season in the pros, a full college football season and then a full minor league baseball season in a span of 12 months. He tired out in his first full pro season and his first season actually devoted solely to baseball. He has an impressive skill set and a higher ceiling than Jackson. It seems like, in saying that Jackson is more likely to bust, that Tim is saying Szczur has a higher floor than Jackson. That sounds like crazy talk to me. My world is on the cusp of being turned upside down. Yes, IMO Szczur has a higher floor than Jackson. I admit to being more bearish on Brett than most, though. I definitely hear what you're saying, but his patience mitigates his contact issue somewhat. And no one is predicting stardom for Jackson, either. I think 2012 will be a big year for Szczur, where we will get a better feel for whether he'll realize all that talent or not. Hopefully he won't be in someone else's system.
  4. If what they want is MLB ready guys (as has been reported), give them JJax and Flaherty.
  5. I'm not one to pin hopes and dreams on players becoming patient. Fools gold. How often does that actually happen? We're not talking about Junior Lake here. More patience could be the difference between be good and being a star for Szczur. The guy has an impressive skill set. Whether he realizes that potential or not remains to be seen. Again, I'd rather keep Jackson if that is what it came down to.
  6. how is his ceiling higher than jackson's? He doesn't have some of the contact issues Jackson has and he has better speed and is better defensively. OPS? Especially, slugging. I don't really know what ceiling means but I would bet heavily that Jackson has a better, longer MLB career. So would I. Ceiling means how good a player realistically could be, based on his skill set. I said I thought Jackson is a safer bet, because he is. And I'd rather keep Brett, if those were the options presented to me. But Szczur has better speed, a better hit tool, better defense and his power is developing. That said, he is 21 already and has shown inconsistency. Most will tell you Jackson doesn't have any outstanding facet to his game and doesn't have "star" potential, but is a safe bet to be an average to above average player. If Szczur's power continues to develop and he cultivates more patience, he has the potential to be a much better player.

  8. I definitely don't want to see Szczur go, but I could live with it. His ceiling is higher than that of a guy like Brett Jackson, but he's a few levels away, and Bjax is a safer bet to be at least an average big leaguer, and sooner. I'd prefer not to give Matt up, but if that is what it takes in the end, so be it. If that is indeed what it will take, I definitely think that limits what else they can ask for, though. Any other prospects would have to be fringe or throw in.
  9. Well that was a shitty thing to say
  10. Red Sox guy is obviously a homer, piecing together the bits ans pieces he liked. Such as pointing out Henry saying he'd like Theo to be his GM for 20 years, and leaving out the rest of what he said, where he acknowledged it had become impossible for that to happen. And how virtually every source close to the situation will tell you Epstein's relationship with the rest of the FO, particularly Lucchino, is broken. And that Theo told them he was leaving after next year anyway, and allowing this to happen will save them 6.5 million dollars and a whole lot of headaches. And yes, Epstein is Ricketts' guy and it would indeed be a big disappointment and slight to moderate setback, but he fails to see that there are Friedman, Hahn, Coppolella, Byrnes, and even Cherington all waiting around to be hired. None of those are Epstein (though Friedman might actually be better), but they represent plans B, C, D, E, etc.
  11. Both sides come out uncomfortable but not destroyed by backing out now. The whole "One side or the other has all the leverage" stuff is just coming from meathead fanbois. Yeah, both sides have something to lose and little to gain if this falls apart. It is in the interests of both parties that this work out. And it needs to work itself out soon, I'm sick of being held hostage by my computer. Just give them two of JJax/Vitters/Castillo/Flaherty/Lake/McNutt and let's call it a day already.
  12. What would the Sox do if this fell through? Keep Theo locked up in a closet? Because it seems sure as [expletive] he and Lucchino won't be able to work together any longer. The atmosphere there must almost tangibly toxic.
  13. This is like watching people scratch an infectious rash.
  14. also hopped up on painkillers And banging Francona's wife.
  15. A true classic. Good times, good times.

  19. His attitude is overcompensation for something. Probably the fact that he's a [expletive] moron.
  20. awesome. from the sound of it, we're going to have to build a crapload of new offices. why weren't there any offices for the front office of a team that spends as much as we do? the more i hear about the situation, the more i understand just how terrible things were. You read the story about the Cubs still charting minor league pitchers on pen-and-paper, and then you read the story about Epstein's massive database programs. It's going to be night and day. Even in dead of night, Wrigleyville will be alive with the gentle, comforting hum of the TheoNet analytic array.
  21. SkyNet, please Lol, that's exactly what I was thinking. The triangle building can house the mainframe. The whole building.
  22. They are more than welcome to take Jon Jackson off our hands Take any of them but Jackson. Whoosh Whoosh? I get the stupid Jon Jackson joke. That's not what I was commented about. Read the first post. You should have quoted that post, then.
  23. Which would make sense then, but I highly doubt Red Sox want money. They have no shortage of that. I'd think they'd want talent. And the Cubs could be saying "tough [expletive]; either take the money or get middling talent." This isn't a done deal, but it's pretty obviously beyond the point where the Red Sox scrap everything if the Cubs are insisting they get max compensation value via money as opposed to a player or players. Like I pointed out last night, Theo apparently told Henry and Lucchino he wasn't coming back after 2012 regardless. If that's the case and the Red Sox balk and kill the thing, they risk Ricketts coming after Cherington and leaving them without a obvious candidate after next season if Theo made good. Epstein and Lucchino have also been at odds, with Theo resenting Lucchino's meddling and wanting more autonomy. But throughout this process, Henry and Lucchino have appeared/spoken together with Theo nowhere to be seen (except at Starbucks). Allegiances seem pretty clear here. That also being the case, it's hard to imagine Henry now stepping on Lucchino's feet and giving Epstein the power he wants to keep him in the organization. This thing is way too far down the line for compensation to kill it. It might drag it out, but this is happening.
  24. If Theo will actually be allowed to bring one or two of his guys along (Cherington is obviously off the table), who might make sense? Allard Baird, maybe?
