at least one person in this thread has said that getting epstein could be more important than signing fielder or pujols, and everyone seems to agree that a good GM is really important, much more so than a manager. so why is it unreasonable for the red sox to ask for cashner when the marlins just gave up two of their top 5 prospects (coming into 2011, though their stock had slipped) for a lousy manager, and tampa gave up randy winn coming off a 5 win season to get piniella? It isn't, really. We might have an immediate aversion to giving up a guy like Cashner, but when you take a step back, you'd have to say it'd be more than worth it. We're not talking about guys like Castro or Garza, but guys like Cashner and Vitters, who have warts and may or may not end up being anything. And with Epstein, we're talking about a real organizational and cultural shift, something that will have sweeping positive implication. Is a guy like Cashner worth missing a shot at that? Of course it isn't.
