  1. I would have given 25-year old Albert 10 years. You might have been able to sell me on 10 years for Griffey when he was in his early 20s (not in hindsight, obviously). Beyond that, I'm not sure I can think of any other players in my memory I would feel good about giving a decade long contract to. Maybe young ARod. How about a 27 year old Ryan Braun? No. Braun has never really approached Pujols level, and Griffey and Rodriguez were both better at younger ages and played defense first positions. Braun is really good, but no.

  3. Huh? He's saying that those teams are not a factor and they would want to opt out after a couple of years so they could sign in those markets. Which is ridiculous because the Cubs have an assload of money to spend and a wide opening at their position. Also, I highly doubt 1B in Boston is gonna open up any time soon. DH might.
  4. Seconded but that is in a perfect world. I still don't see the Cards losing Pujols and I suspect the Cubs involvement is just to drive the price up for a division rival (ala the Yanks and Crawford last year). STL going well past the point they are comfortable to keep Pujols and Fielder coming to Chicago would still make me pretty damn happy. I don't think the Cardinals will bump their offer up. They might have, but the way his season played out may have planted the seed of doubt regarding his production going forward. That, along with the fact they really don't have the money. I have thought they were preparing for life after Pujols in Holliday and now Berkman. If they're significantly outbid, they'll lose him. And don't forget to take into account the lack of state income tax in Florida. I think there's a legitimate chance this Miami thing goes down.
  5. I'd much rather see Garza retained, but if the return is too good to pass up, so be it.
  6. Muskat, I can understand: she works for the Cubs and I'm sure they can tell her to write whatever. She's not an actual journalist. But Sullivan? What a moron. Yeah, Muskat is simply a team mouthpiece. Bitching about her is silly, since she's just regurgitating what she's told to say. The rest don't have much of an excuse. Now that Bruce is behind a paywall, I don't read much of the Chicago beat reporters and columnists.
  7. Because they're poorly informed and desperate for something to write about.
  8. The Chicago sports media is a joke (mostly). They are so out of the loop and far behind everyone else they resort to throwing [expletive] at the wall.
  9. Well they better or Kobe will force the issue
  10. I haven't watched BBTN for more than five minutes since I got MLB Network.
  11. I think some people are overstating just how "worthless" Soriano is. Sori is still a 1-2 WAR player (probably more if he goes to an AL team to DH and you factor out his defense) and according to Fangraphs, was worth 5.9 million last year. So it seems there would be at least a few teams willing to take him on if the Cubs eat 40-44MM.
  12. No, no, no. You have it all wrong. What's happening is that the collective is trying to suppress the voice of dissension, regardless of the brilliance or validity of its argument, to maintain the groupthink status quo. It's not that his posts are actually a hot mess of flawed, inflexible logic, poor premises and absolutely dichotomous thinking. No, it's not that. Certainly not.
  13. Given the sample size involved, how can you realistically call that an anomaly? BTW - him having a higher than average (of all players) BABIP is not necessarily an indication of good luck. This is the important part. If we were talking about 300-500 ABs, that's be one thing. But we're talking about 265 games and 1100+ PA. That is a pretty big sample size, certainly large enough to think that it may not an anomaly.
  14. Hmm. That would be great if they could move him. I didn't think it was realistic, especially with the extra hurdle of the NTC. I'm sure Epstein has already learned what teams Soriano would approve trades to. I've actually become increasingly expectant that Soriano will be traded this offseason. Signing a guy like DeJesus for what will (likely) be less than he's worth has only made me more optimistic it will happen.
  15. Yes, but some people can't process the concept of gray area.
  16. And in many circles the perception will be that sentimentality will be the big reason he got in, not because he more than deserved it on merit alone.
  17. And 265 games is a pretty good sample size. You don't have to contrive numbers to quantify what's staring you in the face.
  18. Interesting. Surely the Cards and Brewers wouldn't be able to afford Rollins and their respective 2011 1st basemen. If they're both pursuing him that hard could it suggest that they're both considering moving on? We've all heard that the Brewers have no chance at resigning Fielder, but they keep popping up in his rumors. Of course they're lining up contingencies. If they weren't, their GMs would be really bad at their jobs (remember the Astros/Beltran fiasco after the 2005 season?). In the case of the Brewers, it's not really so much a contingency as their new reality. They made Prince their best offer, but it's not enough to get it done and everyone knows it.
  19. Vitters has a .439 career minor league SLG. Headley's was .500 in the minors, but just a .392 SLG in the majors. His minor league numbers show he's capable of exhibiting solid power and him just now being in his prime years and getting out of PetCo may help him realize that. If nothing else, the power difference between Vitters and Headley is likely to be small enough that Headley will more than make it up with much better patience and defense. I'm a Vitters fan, but his presence in the minors wouldn't keep me from pursuing Headley and offering a pretty solid amount for him. Petco definitely has been holding Headley's power down. His career SLG there is .336, with a .441 on the road. He's not likely to be a big power guy regardless, though he could be a .450-.475 SLG guy in the next few years if he gets out of San Diego.
  20. I don't think it was meant as a terribly serious offer. Yeah, not so much. Kenny might have meant it as a serious proposition, but that would never happen. If one year of Danks was worth Montero and Banuelos, Garza would be worth Montero, Banuelos, Batances and Ivan Nova.
  21. It's not that Fielder would prefer those teams, it's that a Boras client would have his list narrowed down so much this early in the offseason. Exactly. Boras will want the maximum number of perceived suitors right up to the moment the contract is signed.
  22. I really don't see Garza being traded unless the package is spectacular. The Cubs are short on starting pitching as it is, and Garza is relatively cheap and under team control beyond this year. There's no harm in shopping him to see if a team like Boston or the Yankees will overpay, but I have a hard time envisioning it actually happening. What I mean by a spectacular package would be a two of Banuelos/Betances/Montero plus 2-3 mid-level prospects type return. ML-ready or near ML-ready top SP prospect(s) would be a must.
  23. Even if they are defeated in the title game I'd have a hard time saying that whomever it is would deserve to be champion over LSU. The only way would be if their opponent wins by double digits, imo. A squeaker would create a real mess.
  24. By far? Not so much. I thought they were pretty fortunate to get away with the win over Alabama, and if I had to put money on a rematch, I'd bet on the Tide.
