I wouldn't say the plot thickens. Basically everyone knows they aren't 16, but the accepted form of proof was provided. So even if it was falsified, it doesn't matter. If your government says you are a certain age, then for all practical purposes you become that age -- even if in reality you aren't. For example, if your government says you are 21 years old, when in reality you are 18, then you can go out and drink.
