  1. If they had a good line and brought in one good receiver, I think Orton would be fine. The problem isn't really settling on Orton, but not giving him much of anything to work with. Olsen and Hester are his only real weapons. And Forte. I agree he doesn't have the weapons, but I also feel he's not going to be a top level QB regardless. No, he'll never be Manning. But look at Pittsburgh, they win with regularity without a guy at QB who lights it up. Obviously I'd prefer to have a solid franchise QB. But Orton can get the job done if he has better receivers. I don't really consider Forte a weapon in the passing game. It's fine to dump off to the guy every once in a while, but when i'm talking weapon, I mean guys who can get you 10-20+ yards on a somewhat regular basis. The Titans won 13 games last year with Kerry Collins at QB. If the Bears' running game and defense are strong enough, Orton can do enough. The key is the defense has to be stellar and the running game has to be very strong. I don't know. I'm getting older and just want to see a Manning-type era once in Chicago. Just once. I think it would be bombastic. The whole city would be on fire with Bears bloodlust.

  3. Kind of hard to watch as needs go unaddressed. But, in fairness it was a fairly junky FA class this year. There's still the draft, still the June 1 cuts, still time to do things. I do like that we're now away from the Tait/Miller geriatric committe at OT. Still need one more big body on that line for me to feel like we're on our way though. QB is always a mess, and looks to continue to be as the Bears have no clue what they're doing and apparently no desire to go after big time players at the position even when an opportunity presents itself. In short, they can't coach one, and they won't sign one that someone else has already coached. A recipe for continued disaster.
  4. So Floyd agrees to be paid spit, AND he gives the Sox the option year at the end? Wow. Of course Quentin and Danks weren't interested. That's crazy cheap, especially in the early going.
  5. I felt jipped by the end of that Marquette/Mizzou game. But -- it was the right call, the guy stepped on the damn line. There's a couple people at work who are going to be grumpy today.
  6. from the limited video i saw from japan, it didn't look like he stepped in the bucket nearly as much when he was playing there. not that he didn't open up his front shoulder, but he opened up less and still stayed closed enough to drive the ball. maybe i am crazy, but i have a hard time seeing him be successful with the approach he was using the second half of last season. Me neither. If he proves me wrong, so be it.
  7. It was depressing seeing Oswalt suck and realizing he'll still probably pitch well against us during the season.
  8. I heard them talking to a guy from the Padres organization about a week ago on XM and they said he has been throwing bullpen sessions and Prior said everything felt "really good" and that they hoped to get him pitching to live batters "soon" and were still feeling like he would be able to contribute to the team this year. Pretty much the same thing everyone has heard about Prior before in past seasons. Obviously he is going to need to pitch in some actual games where he has to let it loose and try to get batters out before anyone really believes he may finally be close to getting ready. Seems like he always makes it through the bullpen and side sessions and then at some point soon after that starts feeling "discomfort" and has to start shutting it down. At this point I really don't care one way or the other about him, but it seems like a long shot that he would actually be able to come back and be effective. Is there any precedent for a pitcher being out as long as Prior has and then coming back and having success? How about someone like Isringhausen -- starter with the Mets, then injury problems, re-invents himself as a reliever a couple years later.
  9. If I could put him in a package deal for an all star player, I would do it without any hesitation at all.
  10. OPS+ as a measurement will greatly benefit the older players because the talent pyramid was much steeper back then. The best players from that era were vastly better than their peers. Alternatively, the scrubs today are much better than the scrubs of those eras. Thus, the ERA+ of those guys was much better than the ones for players today. Except Albert, of course. I agree. Tends to underscore how special Pujols has been.
  11. Well if that isn't a bunch of play-the-game-the-right-way cliche BS. And just like in baseball, I'll take the raw talent over the stoic, calm-eyed players and coaches. Man I hate the Big 10 Haha, what caused you to hate the Big Ten so much? They've got 4 teams past the first round. Guess they don't suck as much as he was hoping they would.
  12. Bad. One less crappy pirate for our boys to rain home runs on. Yeah, that's true. They'll just throw another unknown from the minors at us that we have no scouting report on.
  13. Good. One less ugly Pirate to have to look at.
  14. Oh we're fine for getting in... it's just comical how many ways this team can find to lose. Hehe, yeah. Maybe they're just saving it up for the playoffs.
  15. Cyno's meltdown over the Hawks is now more entertaining than the Hawks themselves
  16. I'm starting to hate the term "wildcat" now like I hate other buzz words that seem to pop up in sports.
  17. The Texas Rangers did the same thing during the period where President Bush (Dabya) was one of the owners. LOL, at least the Crew took a look at it and said, "umm...this needs some sausage and beer." Doesn't sound like the Cards are even going to do that. I'm not sure if Texas did anything with their setup. BBQ in the parking lot?
  18. At least we knew he'd be a good returner. With White I'm not sure if he'd be a good WR, or a good QB. It's possible he just plain old won't be good. 4th round or he's a reach.
  19. Wait, seriously? A small stretch of bad play and now you refuse to watch the team, even though they are still the 4th seed? I said I'd check the score, but no -- I've got one set of eyeballs, and given how bad they've been, those eyeballs will be spending the lion's share of the time watching tourney games.
  20. Just noticed this part. The draft expert at RealGM is an insider, so his picks aren't solely what he sees as good picks but actually based on what teams are looking at. Now obviously he doesn't know what every team is thinking and even if he did he still will get things wrong, but it's possible he has mad this pick in the last two mocks because he knows the Bears are looking at him seriously. I guess I just take it on faith that he knows what he's talking about because he claims to be an insider? I mean there's no explanation of the pick or anything. I'm sure the Bears are talking about a lot of guys right now. Who knows how much of that total conversation this guy is picking up. Probably very little.
  21. Yeah, it would just be an out-of-character move, for more than one reason. If they do it, and it keeps us from getting something that we really need, I'll probably be looking for a bottle of Jack.
  22. I can't disagree that with Angelo anything's possible though.
  23. While this concern is certainly legitimate, especially if his swing still has a huge hole in it, I'd like to give him more than 17 sporadic at-bats before casting judgment. Perhaps he's just rusty like a lot of players at this stage of spring training. I don't think sample size comes into it. You don't need 200 ABs to see if a guy has attempted to change his swing. If he's still bailing out every time, that's something that becomes obvious pretty quick. I didn't see Fuku, but if he is indeeed still doing this, I don't have much hope for him. And I think Lou is expecting to see that he's worked to improve. If he doesn't see it, he's going to be disappointed. I hope he comes in and does well in year 2, but it's disturbing to hear of a player with obvious problems who may not have even tried to address them. That's not acceptable.
  24. He sounds like exactly the kind of player that slips into the later rounds, and someone picks him up because he's good value later on, and his agent finally agrees that he will try another position when the team calls. I've heard he's resistant to trying other positions. I think that's going to hurt him. Also, I don't like the idea of switching to a fad offense, like we did with Crowton.
