  1. I'm having trouble connecting with the excitement over this. We're still a .500 ballclub that is struggling to score runs. We just happened to get a couple homers on a questionable bullpen to pull one out. If I thought this meant the season was turning around that would be different. But I really don't. I mean it's a nice win, don't get me wrong. But that's about it. If they follow it up with an 8 game winning streak, THEN I'll start getting excited.
  2. I'll be there tomorrow and Sunday. You can bet I'll be cheering for DeRo to get out, and for Woody to get hit. They no longer wear the correct uniform. It's nothing personal.
  3. I figured Goodell would use the Big Hammer on Stallworth. He killed a person. Then he got off light on a plea deal. Personally, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable with him ever playing in the NFL again.
  4. I'm sure some of the details will come out, especially if Ricketts winds up losing the team. People will want to know why he didn't honor the numbers he agreed to. The economy can always tank -- not the Cubs' fault.
  5. Favre has never played football after a surgically repaired arm. I dispute that you can use his historical data in this situation and come up with anything accurate.
  6. Seems to me they prematurely announced the "winner." The bidding is still taking place - the only thing Ricketts won was the right to be the sole bidder until Cubs brass gets tired of it and opens it back up.
  7. Because beer guts have their advantages.
  8. I can't believe Sosa lied to me, man. Sosa lied, my Cubbie faith died.
  9. Adding streaming video for the same price makes the MLB iphone app one of the very best values in all of sports.
  10. All of us: Cubs - 0 What ARE we going to do about that, anyway?
  11. I figured it would be a drawn-out process, but now it's starting to get boring. Wake me up when it actually happens.
  12. There's no way to know, and I agree with your point about it being a double-edged sword. Either way, the club is going to be criticized.
  13. Best trade option for us, IMO. The guy can play 3b while Ramirez is down/needs rest, he can spell Theriot a little more often than Blanco because his bat it better, and he could probably play some 2b too. If the light suddenly goes on, then he's a better alternative than almost anyone available for trade....but the chances of that are unknown (hasn't been given much of a shot). I don't know why more teams don't go after prospects that an original team has lost interest in. As for Wood, you could also put Fontentot back in a utility role when Aramis comes back and slide Theriot to second base. Give Wood some playing time and he could end up being what Khalil Greene was supposed to be (not defensively, of course). All good, but the first time Hendry was presented with an offseason without a pile of cash to work with, we wound up with Miles, no DeRosa, a useless version of Bradley, and a ballclub sinking in the standings by June. I'm not sure I want Hendry tinkering with this roster any more until someone tells him he's got lots of cash again.
  14. It's pretty hard to quantify player emotion, and how that might play into a club's success or failure. But yeah, they look dead. They are probably having a hard time generating any excitement among themselves, knowing that right now they just aren't a very good baseball team. They have their best hitter out and questionable for the remainder of the season, and their supposed hot acquisition looking like he won't perform at all this season. That's your best 2 big bats, removed for all intents and purposes. Tends to make it harder to be all rah-rah.
  15. Too bad ARam won't be around to jump start our season like he did in '07.
  16. We could very well be 4.5 out by the end of tonight, right? The division might not be great, but we are still sinking.
  17. Exactly, add in the four from last yr and he would have gotten 8 games in total. Giving him 12 would open a door for the NFLPA to file and win an appeal. I don't think the Giants suspension constitutes a hold on what Goodell can do, but I agree 4 games is more likely. I was just throwing it out there for discussion. Like I said, I would take Plax. I'd prefer the 4 games to be served at the beginning of the year, of course.
  18. If he lands in jail or is suspended for multiple games, you'll care. And I agree with Banedon, the Broncos can't afford to trade Marshall to the Bears. He won't land in jail this season, and he was already suspended last year. If he's suspended again this year, Burress for 12 games is > most (all?) of our other WRs for 16. Just playing Devil's Advocate: what if it's 8? Goodell likes the feeling of wielding a mighty hammer. I'd take Plax, but I also think it's foolish to simply dismiss a player's off the field behavior and only evaluate based on football talent. There's pretty much 2 teams left that do that, and they are both perennially horrible. There's a long list of players who wound up hurting their teams badly because they couldn't live like decent human beings outside football. A lot of great football talent winds up sitting the sidelines and watching from home because of off-the-field issues.
  19. I would have to agree. Marshall beats women. Plaxico shot himself and is late to meetings. Guys who beat women also tend to keep beating women. I looked up Marshall on wikipedia out of curiosity -- his list of infractions leads me to believe the best choice of team for him would be the Bengals or the Raiders. agreed. i'm no expert, but it seems guys like this tend to be habitual offenders. i would be very skeptical that someone like that would ever change unless he underwent serious counseling. He's not going to suddenly change because he comes to Chicago, that's for sure. Looking at the list, it seems like he's been given light punishment for many of those, too -- which to me just tends to reinforce the behavior. I'm fairly certain we will eventually see Marshall's name in the headlines again for something criminal. I'd rather it not be with Chicago, after looking a bit closer. I wasn't aware of the size of his rap sheet. It's pretty extensive.
  20. So the receiver is the star and the QB who gets him the ball is a farce? Yep. Haven't you heard? QBs who request trades but are otherwise good citizens are puffed up, immature babies. Repeat offenders who beat women and spend as much time in a police car as they do on the football field -- it's serious business if they request a trade!
  21. Sammy won't get in. At least, not unless the mood changes. There's no way he racks up tons of votes when McGwire can't get more than a few.

  23. I'm far less bothered by greenies than the cream and the clear. That's your call, but a PED is a PED is a PED. I'm not going to give some guys a pass because their's wasn't as effective. I don't view it that way. An upper doesn't come close to the mad science experiments of latter-day roids, IMO. Cheating's ok as long as it only helps you play a certain % better. (% to be determined based on who used what when I was growing up back when everything was pure) I realize there's a slippery slope aspect, but I just can't get to the point of considering a greenie on the same level as modern roids. I can get much the same effect from drinking 5 cups of coffee as a greenie. It's a pep pill, an old one -- doesn't even come close to more modern-day amphetamines such as meth. Shall we condemn players if they have too much coffee in the morning too now?
