    Nice work. I'd feel better about it if I had confidence the Cubs will play well against weaker teams. What is the Cubs record against sub .500 teams this year? It seems we don't dominate the weak sisters like we should. That might not be true statistically though. It just seems that way to me.

    lol, this made me laugh. But it's actually for free Ground Shipping on orders of $99 or more. Which means, usually shipping is around $8-$10 or so, give or take. shopmlb.com: helping out the poor in any way they can with free shipping! :lol:

    Since it's only 1 years' salary in any case, and Burnie has done a pretty good job (as I have stated many times in other threads)----it's all going to be a moot point after this season anyway. I just believe 2 things: 1) We needed bullpen help before the season and we all knew it. 2) Baltimore or some other team sure would have given at least a little more on the Sosa deal. All it would have taken was a couple million to make it nearly a 50/50 salary deal--and only for 1 season. I just believe Hendry could have gotten a bit more money wise. Is it in my head? Yes. So the idea that there was NO possible better deal is only an idea in someone else's head. Tit for tat. I'm certainly glad we have Hairston----a guy who can play mediocre baseball in Center field, which is infinitely better than what Corey was providing. And I'm glad Sosa is gone----his tiresome act had grown so old and irritating there was really no going back with the guy. But if the Trib was really cash-strapped (something I really don't believe, but whatever), then Hendry needed a little more to sign another reliever, and he fell a little short. I think the couple extra million could have come from the Sosa deal. But oh well, it's water under the bridge and the end result is we have better play from the right field position and a replacement to help us through while Corey attends therapy sessions in Des Moines.

    I must admit I haven't been following Kearns' career, so forgive me. What happened to him? Did he lose his focus? Or is it just one too many injuries? The guy does seem a bit prone to missing time. We've got alot of those kind of players already, don't we? What good would trading Hill for Kearns do if Kearns just lands on the DL anyway?

    If a pitcher had a record on the order of 1-15, for example, what would that tell you? Assuming I know nothing else about the guy, it would probably indicate: 1) His team is terrible. 2) He is a member of that team. 3) Ergo, he is probably not very good, either. Wins & Losses for a pitcher aren't a chief statistic. But when you see huge disparities in W/L it does imply some things about the pitcher---because at a certain point, the major pitching measurements feed wins & losses to a some degree so it's highly unlikely you will find a great pitcher with an atrocious record. And vice versa.

    Sure. Are we going with the big 3 from each team or the entire starting staff? Probably easier to go with the whole staff, though our argument was really over just the big 3.... Up to you. It'd be easier to go with the whole staff. It allows for injury too. We could do both, too - I don't mind compiling those stats. :) It's halfway through the campaign, Cali. Not impossible--but with Oswalt & Clemens dealing diamonds (as the Soulster said they would), and with Woody & Prior struggling to return from injuries (*ALSO* as the Soulster predicted), it's looking very much like crash n' burn for ol' CaliforniaRaisin 8)

    Burnitz was bought with the money saved in the Sosa deal. Paying the money earmarked Sosa for Burnitz, Hairston, and Fontenot has been far more valuable statistically than paying the money earmarked for Sosa to Sosa. And that's without getting into any sticky arguments over team chemistry or clutchness. People seem so hung up on this idea of paying Sosa to play for another team. Do you honestly think there was a trade out there that shedded Sosa's entire salary? If there wasn't, would you rather be paying him to suck here rather than paying Burnitz, Hairston, and Fontenot the money to be contributors? 3/4 of his salary still being paid by us? Yes, I think there was a deal out there that would have shed more of his salary than that.

    I agree. he will see his RBI numbers increase as Dusty finally realized guys with OBPs lower than their weight should not bat in the top 2 spots in the order. PS- Welcome to the forum! I have learned not to assume Dusty "realizes" anything :) More likely, he simply stumbled across an effective combination for the time being and will switch away from it without batting an eyelash

    Maybe he just needs a rest or something. The last time he had a break was after he went 1-13 for the Brewers. He came back dealing. Try the same thing again maybe? I hate to unload lefties. Especially ones you know can be effective if their stuff is right.

    Burnitz wasn't part of the Sosa deal. Saying Sosa had to leave is one thing. Paying another team for one of their players' salary is another thing entirely.

    Rogers is only saying that because the Cards are heading for the playoffs and the Cubs probably are not. And, unfortunately, the prize usually goes to the best player on a playoff team. It takes a truly special season to overcome that barrier. Lee is having that kind of season so far---but there's a long way to go. Also, never underestimate the power of Cub hatred in the National media. Lee has an uphill climb ahead of him. Still---what an incredible season for an amazing ballplayer.

    There's no way the Sammy deal can be considered a good one. We're still paying Sammy to be bad in Baltimore. What could Hendry have done with the $13million it is costing us to keep Sammy & his salsa boombox away from our clubhouse? Plus, we could have signed Burnitz and STILL kept Sosa for the exact same money. So comparing Burnie & Sosa's numbers doesn't make any sense. As for Hairston------nice bench-quality player. Baltimore would have sent him our way for a bag of peanuts, it didn't need to be in the Sosa deal.

    There are alot of players on this club who have to be looking at CPatt and thinking, "my job isn't safe" Good move by Hendry.

    We all remember the consecutive years being ranked #1 minor league system. Basically, from all that we netted Prior,Zambrano, Lee, and ARam. Prior & Z directly from the minors---Lee & ARam from trades for our prospects. Those are 4 very good players. I'm not sure it's enough though, considering all the potential we had sitting in the minors in the early 2000's. And notice none of the position player talent we have came from our system. None. That's not very comforting---and honestly there's really nothing in the system to be overly excited about. We drained the minors to put together a contender & it basically didn't work. I guess you have to take your shot. Looks to me like Hendry just fell short of his goal. He quite simply failed.

    Please show me how Corey has been unwilling to change lately. There's quite a difference between unwilling to and trying to but not having success. Are you saying Corey is simply not talented enough then? BTW, It's not that hard to shorten your swing. Corey's swing remains one of the longest, loopiest swings in the big leagues---just as it was when he entered the league. To be the leadoff hitter that they tried to make him? That's not where his talent lies. And his swing has changed. In trying to shorten it up, they've seemingly made it less level. If his bat could stay in the zone as much as it did a couple of years ago, he'd be having much more success. LOL. If that's the result of the Cubs trying to shorten Corey's swing, then they're either the worst teachers on the planet, or Corey is the worst student. I guess we'll never know now. But in the Cubs' defense, they didn't just try to make CPatt a leadoff hitter. They've tried him in just about every offensive role imaginable. But there is NO spot in the order that will work for a hitter who K's 200 times a year and can't get his bat through the zone.

    Certainly the burden of blame for Corey's lack of flexibility since joining the Cubs has to go to Corey himself. However, it's pretty clear we lack quality teachers in our minor leagues. Look how many great position players other ballclubs produce. Some teams bring up a quality position player EVERY SINGLE YEAR. We don't do *ANYTHING EVEN CLOSE* to these teams. Corey is to blame for being unwilling to change lately, but Holy Strikeout Batman---we are terrible developing position players.

    At Spring Training 2 years ago, the only guy who was willing to come over to the fence and sign about 200 autographs was Corey Patterson. I appreciated that. I hope he comes back stronger than ever. I only wish I had confidence in our minor league staff to teach him. It was, after all, many of these same folks who dropped the ball in his early development.
