  1. You know someone's going to turn up hurt. How are they going to get around blowing MLB players who have contracts to play for REAL TEAMS? Yeah, I know it's an exhibition but I'm sure some of these guys will push it just a little. They're competitors and some of them won't want to be seen as losers in front of their countrymen. I'm not saying all of them will push hard, but some might. This is a freaky idea if you ask me.
  2. Awww hell. Keep CPatt. His chick is hot.
  3. Merry Christmas Cubbie Fans!
  4. I remain sad at the whole Sammy situation. Whoever's "fault" it was doesn't matter so much to me anymore. I'm just not happy that it turned out the way it did, with bad feelings all around.
  5. Point taken about Pierre's career numbers vs. his '05 season. I did that purposely because I believe that in '06 we can reasonably expect him to perform closer to his career averages than to his '05 performance. This is an example of regression toward the mean. Everything is relative, Soul. Pujols replacing DLee is a slight improvement. Pierre replacing Neifi Perez, Corey Patterson et al in the leadoff slot is a huge improvement. You're right. Let's hope Pierre returns to his career numbers. At any rate, it's a decent addition because the guy has Championship experience and even his '05 numbers are better than what we had.
  6. This is a whole lot more than a slight upgrade...... 04/04 - 10/02 AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS CUBS '05 leadoff 690 83 168 33 2 13 244 55 44 96 0.243 0.297 0.354 0.650 Pierre career avg 654 100 199 22 9 2 245 47 43 40 0.305 0.355 0.375 0.730 This is enough of an upgrade to take the team's OBP (0.324) from 11th place in the National League up to league average (0.330). If the CUBS are able to pull off a deal for a stud right fielder and get the kind of production out of Cedeno & Murton that we all are hoping for, this will be a very strong offensive unit. Yeah but you're using his career numbers. He wasn't really close to that last year. He was .276/.326/.354. It's not enough of a jump to call it "huge"---at least in my book. I suppose it depends on your definition of "slight" versus "huge." I contend that, if acquiring Albert Pujols is a HUGE improvement, then Pierre is definitely SLIGHT.
  7. We're already wasting a whole bunch of roster spots. Why not sign him and give one of these other schucksters the boot? Come on, you know who I'm talking about. 8)
  8. Mariotti was dead wrong about the White Sox, pretty much all year. And he was dead wrong about the Bears (although not much to blame here, few people saw that coming). But here it's tough to argue. All I will say is, there's plenty of time before the season so let's hope the team shapes up. Because right now it's looking pretty sparse. Pretty much true. Pierre was the backup plan, but let's face it: in a weak, weak F.A. class, Furcal was one of the few decent players available and Hendry needed to acquire him to start the offseason right. Didn't happen.
  9. This is the same recycled story that gets bandied about every time a team loses out on a free agent. The next day there's always this story. It's always "all they had to do was give just a LITTLE MORE and he would have come here." Always. Ofman needs to get some new material. His schtick is old and tired.
  10. Pierre's a slight upgrade over what we had at leadoff last year. Slight upgrade. I'm glad we improved a little but let's not get carried away. This is no "huge" addition to the ballclub. I didn't see us as a contender 2 weeks ago, and I still don't. The team just isn't all that great (to this point, anyway).
  11. Williams isn't consistent enough. Maddux is too old. Wood is injured and obviously isn't going to play until at least May. So now our pitching rotation just went from "all set" to: Prior Zambrano ? ? ? Now ask the question again: why is Hendry seeking a starting pitcher? A: Because we've got holes in our pitching rotation. That's why.
  12. The Cubs should make payments to Tim for keeping support for this ballclub high even when they fail on the field.
  13. A definite upgrade from our leadoff/CF position a year ago. So congrats to Hendry for that. But we're 20+ games away from contending in this division. I would need to see more before calling us a true contending ballclub in '06
  14. I suppose. It doesn't look good right now, that's for sure. Not spendiing all our cash on over-inflated players might not be the worst thing.
  15. Harold should stick to evaluating baseball talent. http://www.annabenson.net Did you read her rant against PETA? My God, I am in love. What a woman!
  16. Sure it's the money, but honestly we offered him more guaranteed cash so that can't have been the whole story. I just think he took a look at us and decided we aren't a team that is positioned for success in the near future. I mean come on folks, LOOK AT US. We're heading downward.
  17. Well, Hendry put all his eggs in the Furcal basket but I guess there wasn't much else he could do. I suppose he could go after Damon for a leadoff hitter. But if you don't want to overpay, then Jonny Damon is probably not a good option  We're basically doomed to have no leadoff hitter again. Which means we won't be able to put pressure on defenses, and Derek Lee will have vastly deflated numbers once again just like he did last season. When all the homers are solo shots and very few of the doubles plate baserunners, how can you possibly stay in a race for MVP? It's impossible---and I'll bet D is pretty darn frustrated about it too. Now our eggs are all in another basket: the Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, and Z basket. Because if these three guys don't find a way to put in full seasons pitching the way they were supposed to from the beginning, we're looking at another below .500 season and probably 4th place.
  18. Indeed. However, they don't call it the "Best Players on the Planet Series" They call it the World Series. Is there some other World being kept hostage in the United States that I don't know about? If so, it might be a fun place to shrink down and visit. How is their Apple Pie? Maybe there's another itty-bitty World in Australia. Nothing but Foster's and the Tasmanian Devil on TV 24/7.
  19. Last year Hendry put all his eggs in one basket. When he couldn't dump Sosa in time for other free agents, our season was over before Spring Training ever began. This year, more of the same. If the Cubs don't sign Furcal, it's over before it starts. This Hendry fellow. Not good. Not even close.
  20. Because I don't think anybody believes that Nomar can still play a passable shortstop. Nomar at SS >>>>>>>>>> AGon II or Neifi. Offensively yes, defensively not so much. Whatever he lacks defensively he can make up for with his bat. As much as I like Nomar, I think his days at SS are over. But my point is I'd rather have Nomar in this stage of his career at SS rather than AGon II or Neifi. I'd rather have 35 games of Nomar @ 2b and then, after he gets injured, take my chances with Cedeno than have to watch another season of Neifi-ball any day :!:
  21. Extrapolating a report in a Florida paper speculating who the Cubs' back-up plan at SS is to their urgency to win is quite a leap. Goes to character, your Honor. If the Cubs are seriously looking at AGone's identical twin as a SS solution, then just how serious can they be about winning a World Series?
  22. Well, at least they understand one of their major problems. I'm not sure Hendry does. If he's going after Alex Gonzalez as some kind of solution at SS, then I think it's safe to say 'ol Jimbo's sanity is in question.
  23. It's AGone II: The Next Whiff Oh yeah. And guess what? The tix will sell out in February just like they always do. Tell me the Cubs have a sense of urgency to win. Go ahead. I dare ya.
  24. Just remember a couple years ago, several sources reported "Pierzynski to the Cubs is a done deal" and we all woke up the next day to find he was in San Francisco. I'm just saying. It's not over until the press conference.
