  1. Right on both accounts. He's perfect for the Cards then. They'll protect him while he pumps back up. Just like Carpenter.
  2. I'm too lazy a mind to work out all these statistics. It makes me want to go scratch my fingernails on a chalk board for a couple hours and then shoot myself. Regarding Mr. Hendry: this is his last hurrah, the last ditch effort to turn this thing around before he's fired. At least he's making an effort of it. I do appreciate his hard work, but it needs to start paying off, right now.
  3. I keep hearing these things too. Apparently Pax would really like to strike a big deal for a monster inside scorer, but he doesn't want to give anything up to do it. I think we can safely drop the pretenses. Barring a draft lottery miracle, or a Knicks collapse to the lower tier (could happen I suppose), Pax is going to have to give something up to get that inside points-machine----or just live with what he has. It's his choice, but he's not getting something for nothing.
  4. Try that in court then, sir. I'll guarantee you'll get laughed back to your law office.
  5. Of course, Peyton IS prominently on the cover of SI. Plus, he posted these in the Saints thread and it didn't seem to hurt too much. Well there is another SI that will come out before the Super Bowl is played. The question I have is, if the Bears are featured on the cover for next week, will neither team win? Will anarchy ensue? Maybe the world will end. Who knows. The SI cover has been denied so many times the past few years that now it is pretty much agreed that curse has moved on, and the curse already hit the Madden cover winner this year. Thankfully, Madden has never chosen Peyton to grace its cover, and hopefully never will. That's what OleMiss said when Brees was on the cover of SI last week. 8-) JINX JINX JINX those Colts!
  6. Another thing I will be interested to see is how he works after the honeymoon period is over. I've been fooled too many times with coaches & managers that get a good initial boost, but once they get kicked in the mouth a little bit they never recover. Dusty was a prime example of this. The latest is Savard. If Lou starts out hot, I'll be watching to see what happens after that first losing streak.
  7. If anything, it could hurt current DirecTV subscribers in the future in the form of higher prices. As others have pointed out, with a monopoly DirecTV could raise the price as much as they want to and people who want the package would have no choice but to pay it because they couldn't get it from another source at a lower cost. This should be an illegal monopoly. Huh? Illegal monopoly in what way? Should any magazine company be able to print Sports Illustrated? How about CDs? Should it be a Monopoly for one record company to be the only one to put out the next Eminem CD? That's ridiculous and you know it. It's a contracted service. Always has been. Exclusive rights are a part of any copyrighted material. You usually get a premium for them. DirecTV offered a premium for exclusive rights, and that's what MLB granted them. Happens every day.
  8. A good amount of people think the Bears victory was a turnover-fueled fluke. They think the Saints just gave us the game with their mistakes. Never underestimate the human capacity for self-delusion.
  9. Is there anyone on the planet who thinks the Bears won by "fluke" over the Saints? Such a person knows very little, if anything, about football.
  10. I dunno.....would you? That's: Garnett Wallace ?? -- Thomas moves in to start? Sef? Gordon Hinrich
  11. He must be their version of Jason Marquis then, because the last time Ryan Franklin started in Seattle his ERA+ was 85. 88 the year before that. I think he was relieving in PHI & CIN last year
  12. Lots of QB's progress up the ranks from backup status. Orton doesn't have to run practice squads the rest of his career. But he could end up being a nice Mike Tomczak style longterm backup role with the Bears. Griese may or may not be back next year. I don't think it's a guarantee he's better than Kyle by then. Orton can progress via practice and studying. He's under contract, isn't he? A 3rd string QB doesn't have much leverage to force a team to move him. I think you're being entirely too impatient with this situation. There's no need to do anything with Kyle right now. Even if they keep the same 1/2/3 next year, Griese is definitely not coming back for a 3rd year as the backup. By 2008, at 26, Orton could be the proverbial heartbeat away from the starting job. I definitely think that he would have to consider that a very nice career trend for him. A 3rd string QB doesn't have any leverage to unseat a veteran backup who can still play such as Griese. BTW, where are you getting this Griese leaving stuff? The guy is signed for big dollars for years to come.
  13. I go to the local bar for Sunday Ticket. How much does it cost to have it in a residential setting? I think it cost me around $200 this year. I figure I'd easily spend more than that over the course of the season if I went to a bar every game. How much is a beer in a NYC bar these days? I'd be watching in Hoboken (Eli's hometown), just across the river, but similar prices. If I went to a bar for Sunday football, I'd be spending $3-5 per beer, plus food, every Sunday, from 12:30-7:15 (at least). I could probably get away with only spending $15-20 on occasion, but I'd probably spend at least $50 most Sundays. At my house, we take turns buying kegs, and split the cost of food that we usually make at home, so I might average $15 per Sunday. Plus, I can lay down on my couch if I want, play with the dog, yell, scream, nap at will. And I have 100% control of the tv (station and volume). 3 to 5 bucks...beer hasn't really gone up that much. Did you get around that weird keg law (extra charge) in NY regarding deposits? Where can I find a wife who will let me spend 12-6:30p every Sunday at the bar? 8-) Also, I like to be able to hear the broadcast without having to strain over the noise of a crowded bar. I understand there are advantages to the bar setting---I think it's fun too. $250 bucks/year isn't that much for what I'm getting in return, IMO of course. Cable was charging me more per month and didn't even offer the option.
  14. As of right now, all Comcast games are on EI. I'm not sure how the arrangement works though. That's not the question. I knew that. Did or could DirecTV customers in the Chicago area get Comcast Cub games on DirecTV? Will they still be able to if MLB EI goes exclusive on DirecTV? Shouldn't Comcast have a little say in that? Wouldn't that be sort of a conflict of interest? Hmmmm.....I guess I'm confused. DirecTV has carried the comcast sports net channel (and the "B" channel as well) since its inception. I don't understand why there would suddenly be a problem. That's how I get most of the Cub games for basically free in Madison ;) Bulls & Hawks too.
  15. I doubt that seriously. Orton's struggles were in his true rookie year. He had 10 wins, and has had a year to sit, watch, talk to both Rex and Brian, and learn what it takes to be an NFL quarterback. My guess is that we have the same 3 quarterbacks next year, or if we draft a middle round/late round QB, I could see Griese being traded and Kyle being #2. Who cares? He's not going to play here, ever. He knows that, which is why he was complaining back in training camp. #3 QBs aren't for someone who just sits and stagnates. It's a fluid depth-chart position that almost always has some young low draft pick who nobody knows about yet. We know about Orton. I doubt Kyle even wants to stick around under these conditions. As for trading Griese----I suppose that's one of the only ways Kyle sticks around, but it leaves us in a much worse QB position than this year. I don't see why Angelo would suddenly want to leave us razor thin when he worked so hard to remedy that situation. Here's where we differ. I don't think we know about Orton yet. How can you know about Orton after 15 games as a true rookie? He didn't have a full grasp of the playbook yet. You don't know that he's not ever going to play here...injuries happen. Grossman could get his leg smashed again or something. And I don't remember the complaining in training camp. He was probably upset that he got knocked down to #3 after being a somewhat successful starter last season, but he's a 2nd year player. I haven't seen him as upset as you imply. What else do you need to know? How is he ever going to get a chance to show people any improvement running the practice squad and being inactive every week? Look around the league. How many #3's are seeing serious time? How would Orton ever get to a point with the Bears that he would see serious time? There won't even be a QB competition next year. Probably not the year after, either. Grossman/Griese is set. That's the combo that just got you to a Super Bowl. Think Orton wants to run practice squads for the rest of his career? I'll bet there's a lower-tier team that would give him a shot at the #2.
  16. How exactly am I suffering? I have DVR. I have digital cable and digital phone. I have the entire cable tv package, which includes a ridiculous amount of premium movie channels. How is that suffering? Sometimes one doesn't know how much he suffers until the suffering ends. What exactly are you referring to when you talk about suffering? I'm assuming you are referring to HD. Aren't all cable providers switching more and more to HD? Won't they all be required to go fully HD by a certain date? If that's the case, what's the difference in HD between cable and dish? I don't own a HD tv yet, therefore there is nothing to suffer for yet. I have 7 tv's plugged in throughout my house, and I don't see the point of buying just 1 HD tv if I watch games on different tv's. Therefore, when I do switch to HD, I will be buying multiple tv's, and the longer I wait, the cheaper those tv's get. I actually wasn't referring to the HD programming. I'm referring to the ton of extras that are on DirecTV. Seriously, there are just lots of extra alternate channels in the lineup----you get extra games, such as regional-only broadcasts. And I already mentioned I'm getting all 3 of the metro market sports channels where I live, something cable would never dream of doing. I don't even think the RSN's are part of the cable lineup---you just get your local, unless that's changed since a couple years ago. Then there's Sunday Ticket. I seriously don't see how any sports addict could live without that. For sports, there's nothing close. I don't even think that's a debate, actually. As for the weather----I lose signal maybe on 3 days a year, during super-strong thunderstorms. It lasts maybe 2 hours apiece, while the primary cell of the storm is passing right in front of the dish. I used to lose cable signal for an hour or two too though----after power outages when the cable company would reset their service. All in all I think it's a wash; it never happens in fall or winter because there aren't as many thunderstorms. It's only spring/summer. Not trying to call cable subscribers stupid. Just saying----you may wish to take a second look if you are a sports fanatic.
  17. I like the potential of Wainwright. Im really high on him. A good 1-2 punch of Carpenter and Wainwright will give teams a struggle. Carpenter Reyes Wainwright Wells Looper Not sure what you would get out of that rotation. Wow. I'm really wondering what kind of voodoo LaRussa has planned for this year then. ERA+ for 2006 Carpenter: 143 (good) Reyes: 86 (terrible.....but barely pitched, 85 innings) Wainwright: 141 (barely pitched.....75 innings) Wells: 70 (horrid, barely pitched last year though, hasn't been over 100 since '03) Looper: 124 (again, barely pitched though....he's a reliever) These are mostly relievers being thrust into the starting rotation, yes? What kind of rotation is this? Seriously, if they win with this there needs to be a federal investigation. That's worse than our starting rotation last year, and it isn't even close. How many runs are they expecting to get out of Pujols? 300? What's the plan in Stl?
  18. Who is going to pitch for the Cards this year? No seriously. Who?
  19. No, no, no. You're in the Chicago market. You still get all your Cubs games. And White Sox.
  20. I doubt that seriously. Orton's struggles were in his true rookie year. 21. Push. Yeah, I tend to agree. If someone has a edge here, it's probably pretty slight. I would have to agree-the RB's are dead even. Maybe I'm being a homer, but I think the Bears RBs are better...but thats not taking a lot away from the Colts RBs who I think are good. I think Jones and Addai are about a push, but I think Benson is better then Rhodes Everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion, but there's no way IMHO to definitively judge the RB duos of the game, especially since Addai was used progressively through the season. Both duos had a great regular season and have been solid in the postseason. As big of a fan of Addai as I am right now, I'd say the RB matchup is as even of any matchup in the SB. Addai was a really good pickup for you guys. YOu guys didn't lose much getting rid of Edge. They gained by it. Edge was hitting the wall, and Indy wisely saw it.
  22. Less than 10% is simply an eloquent way to say that MILLIONS of people still can't get DirecTV. 10%. What is that? 30 million people? Something like that? Oh yeah, the numbers are very small. Heck, you can probably get 30 million people in a baseball stadium. 30 million is a large raw number, when taken by iteself. But is small is relation to those who can get it. Here's a nice visual... Those who can get it: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Those who can't" XXX I've been on many cable providers in my life. Then I switched to DirecTV. The sports and extras they offer just blows cable out of the water, and that's without the new EI exclusive. Here in Madison, I'm getting Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Chicago sports stations as part of my BASIC package. Cable subscribers here get Milwaukee. That's it. And no alternate channels. There's really no comparison. Cable providers in LA and Chicago when I lived there were no better. Cable just sucks period.

  24. Bears are underdogs, and I believe rightfully so. I'm not complaining about it like I was when people were picking the Seahawks over the Bears. I really believe Chicago will have to play its best game of the year to win this one. Indy has the edge going in. If Manning pulls it off, you're going to see gushing over him like crazy. So if the Bears pull off the upset, would it be bad that they would receive praise? No, not at all why so defensive? I simply stated what I think is going to happen. WE'RE A LITTLE JUMPY, OK? OK?!?!??!?!?! I even said the Bears won! Please Bear fans...don't touch any caffine for the next 9 days! No dammit!! You're just trying to bring down the Bears!!! Seriously, I didn't mean for my response to sound snippy.... 8-)
  25. whoa whoa whoa. I've never seen a picture of Carrie. Is that her? If so, who cares what she writes?
