    I like what Lou has said so far but I I'm waiting to see what he really does. He is the guy that played A.Gonzalez at 3rd over some pretty good prospects in TB. I don't know what was up with that. It was a team of prospects. You're begrudging him playing one semi-vet at one position? No it wasn't, and yes, it was a terrible decision. Most people don't consider players prospects anymore once they have any major league experience. I don't consider them real vets until they have experienced more success than a couple years on a terminably junky team with no hope for success. The '05 Devil Rays had experience at 1B (Lee), but Nick Green, Carl Crawford, Damon Hollins, Jonny Gomes, Jorge Cantu, as well as a good portion of their rotation (Kazmir, Waechter, Fossum) were players that were less-than-established veterans. I know they don't fit the classic definition of "prospect." AGone was the eldest man in the starting lineup on that team. He was junk, yea it was stupid to play him. That entire ballclub was going nowhere. Playing another prospect wasn't going dig them out of their hole.

    I think that's more of an illusion after seeing pictures of people who are much smaller than even Skinny Z. Z's gut is an illusion now? LOL. He's not as thin as he came in last year, clearly. Not that I think it necessarily means anything.

    Really? I think we need stellar defense from him just to keep from vomiting every time we see him on the lineup card. He's going to need to save a heck of a lot of runs defensively to make up for that bat. We need GG defense from Izzy, IMO.

    Is it really "stupid" when Floyd is two years removed from a near MVP-like season? Yes, because Floyd's chances of staying healthy diminsh dramatically if he is starting.

    The slow, deliberate process of benching Matt Murton has officially begun. Don't worry; when Floyd pulls up lame in mid-April Lou will be forced to play Matty.

    I certainly would look forward to supplanting Izturis @ SS. But Cedeno just doesn't look like a major-league caliber ballplayer to me. I'm glad the kid is working on his eye; maybe he could work on it a little more and see what happens in a year or two. We'll need to make a deal or else SS is going to be a sore spot all year, IMHO.

    I have to disagree. Prior healthy and pitching well (by his stardards) is the best starter on this team. I think he meant Hill was the third best starter on the team in that case. Yea, I was trying to make the point that Hill's one of our top 3 in any event.

    Nope-McGriff was never useless for the Cubs, so that doesn't ring any bells for me. Not useless, but pointless at the end of his last season when the Cubs were way out of it and Choi could have used the playing time. Doesn't matter though.

    At the expense of having a player who's a negative factor on the offense? You're right I don't. It's not mutually exclusive; you can find a good defense SS who isn't incompetent when he hits. I don't buy that Cesar Izturis can suck at the plate but be an asset simply because he plays good defense at SS. This team is not good enough to have a complete cipher in the batting order. I know, but Tejada didn't wind up here ;) Think of it this way: we either get stellar defense out of Izzy and at least get *something* out of the position, or we fall back on Cedeno and suck on both sides of the ball at SS.

    We should look at the bright side -- if Hill's not in the rotation, that means the other starters are pitching decently. And if one falters, Hill will get the call anyway. We now have an overabundance of starters. That's not a bad problem to have. My guess is, even if Hill doesn't make the rotation out of camp, Marquis will immediately suck and be swapped to the bullpen for Hill. Hill should be a SP for the vast majority of the season in any event.

    Lee coming in healthy clinches it, ladies and gents: This is the first time since 2003 the entire roster has reported to Spring Training healthy.

    I would expect if Hill was going to fail, he would have trailed off near the end of the year, when batters had a chance to really examine his stuff and make adjustments. Instead, Hill had a good 2nd half. Rich should be in the starting rotation. Even if Prior is healthy and pitching well, he's the 3rd best starter on the club IMHO.

    He's probably thinking more of Izzy's defense, which is, indeed, quite important.

    Yeah, he should formed a club with Schilling and Favre. They could call it "The Douchebags of Pro Sports." If you going to play, play. If not, then retired. Stop with this yearly "will he or won't he" bs. Would they let Jordan in that group as well? As much as I love Michael Jordan, he would have beena founding member of "The Douchebags." Even Jordan didn't have the gall to refuse to play road games and still expect to be allowed on the roster. Only Clemens would sink that low. The guy is a drug creation at this point. Someone please end this madness, Christ.

    Only a Cardinals fan could turn a spat between the White Sox and the Cardinals into the Cubs fault.

    It's all speculatin, but at least Rogers is willing to air out the other side of the story: that trading Zambrano could, in fact, be a positive move for the Cubs if it is done right.

    I don't like Rome, but at least he wasn't stupid enough to guarantee the Bears would be one and done like Cowherd. That guy's just an idiot.

    Glad Stone will be back. Best baseball color analyst in the business, period. I always make a point of going out for lunch on the days he does his pow-wow with Murph. Good stuff.

    I think it's awesome. Let the Yankees continue to eat themselves alive. I'm ready to pop a bottle of champagne and celebrate. Every season that goes by without a Yankees World Series is a blessing.

I like the article emphasis that we paid. too much for mediocre players like Lilly and DeRosa A very average team that would've had no business being in the playoffs if not for a largely awful National League? Exactly. And in the process, they became the least respected World Series champion in the history of baseball (and rightfully so).

    I'm no eternal optimist when it involves the Cubs (no, really, I'm not, seriously), but I think calling anything over 80 wins "gravy" is a bit glum. I'd say 80-85 should be reasonable, with 88 a possibility. I wouldn't talk about gravy until you get past that mark. If this team wins 83/84 games, calling those few wins gravy suggests we should all thank our lucky stars for that much success. And I can't agree with that. It's because of the low win total last year. Nobody feels comfortable giving the Cubs that much of a jump. He did predict a 14 game improvement, which is significant. I've got us hovering around .500 -- hoping for that 85-win area. I'm just jonesing for playoff-relevant baseball in September.

    Should be more fun for spectators than dusty was, at the very least. If he really tries to hold back the rage, it could be even more hilarious. Then you get red-faced, steaming-ears Lou 8-)
