  1. It's not only Chicago. NY and Boston are the same way. Yeah. Mark me down as not wanting to follow NY and Boston's lead......on much of anything. I'll take their rings, and that's pretty much it.
  2. I know. It's frustrating. Seems that Chicago likes to tear up its sports teams before the season even starts. And it starts to happen earlier each year. Now we're talking about stuff when there hasn't even been a ST pitch thrown! What's next? The post-season press-conferece questions: "Lou, assuming you'll suck next year, should you be fired?" Give me a freaking break, man. This is silly.
  3. That's weird, because I just heard someone on ESPN radio say he would be "shocked" if we make it to training camp without a new Lovie contract.
  4. Very few. To be honest, I seldom see anything on there I would want to see. It's about on the same level as VS -- and I get that (not like I watch it though).
  5. I seriously cannot believe there exists a fan who would trade a World Series championship won by guys who sometimes don't hustle for a team of ultra-hustlers who lose. This can't really exist, can it? Can't be. That's depressing. Why would someone buy into such a thing?
  6. Actually, we probably would be a lot better with Eckstein. only because our current SS options suck and our magic pixie dust isn't so good, either
  7. In other news, crews were seen installing special 'no-slip' surfaces in Wood's home. Take that, goat!!
  8. I'm sort of with BBB on this. If Ramirez was really lazy, then how can he put up those numbers? That just doesn't make sense to me. Sounds to me like Dusty told him to take it easy, and so he did. If it means Ramirez plays the whole year, then I don't mind him not straining his legs on every ground ball. Not that it doesn't upset me when a guy loafs, because it does. But I hate seeing a player like Ramirez on the DL much more. I'm having a hard time believing this is what "people" are going to focus on. Maybe the crybaby media will, but surely not the average fan. Especially if the Cubs are winning.
  9. I get annoyed only because so many of them allow it to taint their analysis of the Cubs. The aforementioned Mike and the Mad Dog show, while NY-centric, often talks about national issues. When talking about the Cubs, they seem to scoff at their chances because they are the Cubs, as opposed to because of the fact that they have a GM who refuses to acknowledge the value of the walk. It pisses me off that the Cubs curse nonsense takes precedence over the competence of the management. It almost excuses poor management decisions because they couldn't help it, since it's the Cubs. that's more laziness by those guys than anything. Yeah, but it's annoying. And I'm too lazy and stupid to stay away from their show. It doesn't affect my love for the team. But I don't think that's the point. The point is, it's national media. Not east coast media. If you're going to be a national media outlet then you've got a responsibility to at least give every team a fair shake. That's what annoys me - we don't get fair coverage from those guys, and they CLAIM they cover the national sports scene. There's deception in the sense that they aren't really covering the national sports scene equally. They're covering the favorite teams that they like in a positive light, and slamming those they don't like.
  10. Seems pretty clear there's an East Coast/Yankee bias in those covers. Only last year----after many, many years of Yankee failure, did they finally switch to Pujols.
  11. It's so easy to blame the OC. Thousands of play calls are made, just pick out a random sampling of the ones we didn't like, and you've got instant fodder to hate any OC. I see an offense with mediocre to below-average talent. They appear to have outscored most projections this year. Given this, I'm having a tough time with the idea that Ron Turner should be thrown under the bus.
  12. Seconded. SI and ESPN have always gone out of their collective way to take shots at the Cubs. After the Cubs win the WS, I wish there was a way they could keep SI and ESPN from covering them, basically telling SI and ESPN to go ef themselves. Was there some ancient war between Chicago and the East Coast that I'm unaware of? I don't understand the incessant hatred of Chicago that comes from there. They certainly don't hate on other cities like St. Louis and Houston like they do us, that's for sure. I mean look at that line: "Enjoy it while you can, Cubs fans." My God, is there any other city in sports that has to endure such a blatant, front-cover assault like that? Someone clue me in, because I've never seen anything close to that, ever, in regards to another team. They're basically salivating over watching the Cubs fail. And after what happened with the Bears this year, Christ did we kill Giuliani or something?
  13. &(@#&*(@*()*!@~! SI I couldn't say what I want to on a porn site. Somebody kill these guys
  14. Was that game on WCIU? It wasn't on any of the channels I normally see them (WGN,Comcast,Comcast+,TNT,ESPN). Oh well. Glad they won.
  15. Here we go. 2nd half of the season (well, not really) starting tonight.
  16. Whatever happens I don't see why this needs to become acrimonious. Either way it's still alot of money, and Z will be signing a long-term deal worth a ton at some point in the fairly near future, barring injury.
  17. Alright. So it's an either-or proposition. Thanks!
  18. If the Cubs win, what would that mean in terms of dollars?
  19. Why do you equate not trying to steal third with having a manager who sits around and does nothing? You coach, you know that there is more to game decisions than just "should I steal or not". I want a coach to worry about lefty/right match ups, defensive positioning, pinch hitting, etc...not to attempt a steal when it's likely harmful. But when you throw away a possible option you are limiting yourself and I just don't understand why you would make the opposing managers/teams job a lot easier. Again for the extremists....I'm not advocating to steal the whole time but to use it wisely and especially when you see a good matchup for success. I also don't understand the extremes of one way or another. You mix it up....maybe a slant one way or another but to say to steal all the time or to never steal is foolish to me. I've never thought it was particularly useful to steal 3rd, but hey maybe in the right situation, you put a little extra pressure on the pitcher. I dunno. Maybe if the pitcher throws a lot of sliders in the dirt or something. You steal 3rd to try to take that pitch away.
  20. I don't believe so. I think you can spread out the payments over 3 or 4 months, and maybe more. But it's pretty much an all or nothing service. You can sign up later in the season, but it won't be half the cost or anything. I've never tried to do it, but if you got the package on the installment plan, and then canceled halfway through, wouldn't that essentially be the same thing? I don't know why anyone would do this though, unless they discovered they just didn't like it.
  21. I'm not sure there is a long term plan. I think they are going season-by-season with him at this point. If he heals enough that he can start, excellent. But if he has to be a closer at this point in his career, so be it. But I don't think anyone can say with any certainty how he will heal up. That's my guess. I'm sure all involved have a thought in the back of their heads that if all goes well, Wood could be starting by next season, or maybe earlier. But I think the only plan right now is to keep Wood as healthy as possible in order to pitch regularly out of the bullpen in 2007. i'd imagine that hendry used the name "john smoltz" a couple times during contract negotiations. Probably. I wonder though----Woody just seems so cut out for the closer role to me. Maybe I'm wrong. If he were to become closer and really thrive, it seems to me he might really start liking it.
  22. I saw some kind of interview with Z where he said (paraphrase) that either way arby works out, there's still 6 weeks to figure out a long-term deal. He didn't sound too worried about it, or that he was worried about the arby deadline.
  23. I think you're right. This whole thing was probably in the works for longer than just this year. Now that Rivera's gone, it's interesting to look back and see how Lovie was really pushing for him to be hired as a head coach. Lovie wants his people to succeed. It certainly looks like the plan was to move Babich into the DC role all along, and Lovie really wanted to see Rivera land on his feet somewhere else. Didn't really work out that way, unfortunately. Although I feel there's a real good chance Chico gets another DC gig fairly soon.
  24. Well at this point there weren't any coordinator positions left, were there? Chico really got caught in a bad position. But it's clear he didn't want to run the cover-2 anymore, and Lovie wants it to be run even more than it is already. That's what I take from this, anyway. I never thought Rivera's gameplans were all that great. I think Babich will do just as good a job, maybe better.
