  1. I guess I'll grudgingly accept Dempster in his proper role, only because he historically has been decent closing and are we really going to switch up closers now? That doesn't seem wise. But Marquis. Wow. If Jason pitches it's likely to be an exercise in breath holding, then screaming, then crying, then screaming again, weeping. Really ugly stuff. Don't want to see that.
  2. Anyone think Illinois has a shot to take down Wisconsin? Really, MSU should have beat Wisc Saturday -- they basically gave it away on a stupid late hit penalty on Donovan otherwise it's over. Wisconsin has looked vulnerable to me all year, and Illinois has looked suprisingly good, only losing to Missouri but damn near beating them. Now with the victory over Penn State -- the 2 QB system looking like it's in place for when they need a stronger passing attack -- the defense playing better. Eh -- I dunno, I think the Illini have a shot at this one.
  3. Man what a fantastic weekend of college football. Other than the Cubs, college football is the best thing going. Unless your a Florida, WVU, Penn State, Rutgers, or ND fan of course
  4. My Dad, my Grandmas, my Grandpas -- all the old timers who sat by their TVs watching Brickhouse and Caray over the years with nothing but disappointment to show for it. And me, dammit. I deserve it. All of you do, too.
  5. yeah .. for all the heartburn they give me, the cubs have had a pretty good 2/3rds of a season. since early june -- over the last 100 games or so -- they're playing at a 0.575ish clip, good for about 93 wins over the course of 162 games. The fact that the DBacks have 90 wins means nothing. That's good enough to have you sitting at home some seasons. No team in the NL is without vulnerability.
  6. Everything about this series scares me. A team we never play well against that's overperformed their Pythagorean, has a negative run differential, ranks last in several offensive categories and has one legitimately good pitcher. The better the matchup looks on paper, the more I worry. It's the way this team goes. I disagree, because I don't think I would feel any more comfortable playing the Phils or the Pads/Rockies. I don't think there's that powerful veteran presence on the DBacks that scares me, other than Webb. But the hitting lineup seems to me it's full of young guys who haven't been here before. The Phils -- I don't want to face Rollins right now, or really that team, at all. The Pads have the pitching to shut down anyone, and the Rockies hit the snot out of the ball like the Phillies.
  7. LOL, Phils up big. Mets going to blow the biggest lead in history. Mwahahahahah! '69 karma you scumbags!
  8. Well, except those will be save situations which he is good in. Which are those? It seems sort of silly to me that people think there's some sort of meaningful distinction between his relative success with 1, 2, and 3 run leads and his repeated failures in tie games. Do you think he pitches differently when the game is tied in the ninth inning than he does when it's a 1, 2, or 3 run lead in the ninth inning? The distinction is utterly absurd. The role of the closer, right or wrong, is to come into the game in the ninth with a 1-3 run lead. When Dempster does that, he is a very good pitcher and the numbers back this up. When he comes in when the game is tied or with a 4+ run lead, he isn't very good. I have total faith in Dempster to pick up the save if he's brought in with a 1 to 3 run lead. However, if he's brought in with a 4+ run lead or a tie game, I have faith in him to give up runs. Also, non-save situations aren't restricted to tie games as they include any lead over 3 runs. If you don't think a pitcher pitches differently with a big lead than he does with a 1 or 2 run lead you're crazy. I'm not with you. I fear Demp will break our hearts in the playoffs if he is put in with a 1 run lead.
  9. The Mets. LOL. It's so much fun to watch them fail.

  19. He got around on that high fastball, which shocked the hell out of me. He better not be getting ready to do something good for the first time since the last Cub series.
