  1. You could always pull out a SB tape and watch him coach his team to a win of Super Bowl XI. :D Did he just win the one Super Bowl? I can't remember how many his Raiders won. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was just 1. They unfortunately ran into the Steelers several times in the AFCCG. Good point. Those Steelers were ok if I remember right. :D

  3. I think people are still having a hard time adjusting to the fact that Piniella doesn't really care about who is a proven veteran and who isn't. If this was Dusty Baker's team, yes, it'd be Blanco and Blanco would be playing as often as Soto is right now. But, it's Soto who's getting the AB's and he will be on the playoff roster if the Cubs get the chance to fill one out. In fact, the case can be made that Soto should be starting right now given that Kendall is 8-50 in September and Soto is 11-19. Not saying this means Soto wont be on a playoff roster if we make it, but its clear today was just an offday for Kendall and nothing more. Yup, that was Piniella's quote before the game. The only thing I can find after the game is this little comment by Muskat: I think Piniella is coming around on Soto, I just wish he'd go a little faster on it. One thing that I am happy about is that Piniella seems to really like Soto, which spells good things for his PT in 2008. I doubt he'll ever get to do more than split time in 2007, but I do hope it gets to that point. With Kendall's recent cold streak, Lou may be realizing it's a good idea to give him more days off to rest before the playoffs. Thus giving Soto more ABs in preparation for the playoffs. It also could mean substantial playing time for Soto next year, if for no other reason than to keep Kendall fresh for the stretch run.
  4. Here are the starting pitchers who signed for more money per year than Marquis last offseason: Miguel Batista, Adam Eaton, Tom Glavine, Kei Igawa (including posting fee), Ted Lilly, Greg Maddux, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Gil Meche, Mike Mussina, Vincente Padilla, Andy Pettitte, Jason Schmidt, Jeff Suppan, Jeff Weaver, Randy Wolf, Barry Zito Here are the players who were paid comparable to Marquis (6 to 7.5 million per year): Orlando Hernandez, Mark Mulder, Woody Williams So there were 19 pitchers just last offseason who were paid as much or more than Marquis. Of those 19, how many have been better than Marquis this season? 4, maybe 5. By the way, if you look at the pitchers who were in the next pay level down from Marquis, you get pitchers like Kip Wells (4 million), Joel Pineiro (4 million), Tony Armas (3.5 million), Steve Trachsel (3.1 million), and David Wells (3 million). Do you want any of those pitchers? In this pitching market, if you pay a pitcher 7 million a year, you're expecting a below average to average pitcher. Anybody who has shown to be a little above average like Lilly, Padilla, etc. got larger deals. Marquis signed that contract to be an average pitcher, and he's been above average this year. I don't see how anyone can say he was overpaid for this year. In fact, if teams thought they could get a 4 ERA out of him, they would have paid him 10-13 million like they paid other pitchers with histories of giving over a 4 ERA (Suppan is a great example of this). Now, I have no idea what will happen to him in year 2 or year 3. Almost 1 year in though, he's anything but overpaid relative to the market. I want Steve Traschel  Well, you've got him. For better or worse. :D
  5. Ditto. It will be dead till Dorrell is gone. The Florida game has caused me, for the first time ever, to seriously consider whether it's time to fire Phil Fulmer. There's been people wanting him gone for years now, but I've never bought into the argument. I may now. I thought UF would win the game, but the way UT lost shocked me. Maybe Phil has outstayed his welcome. When was the last time you won the SEC? We last won the SEC in 98 - also our last National Championship. We were in the championship game in 01 and 04, but lost both times. We've been a very good team all 14 years he's been here, but there are certain areas - like the offensive line - that are his specialty, but have been beyond subpar recently. I'm not sure if this is a kneejerk reaction, or if I'm really buying into the fire Fulmer camp. EDIT: We've won or shared the East 3 times since 98 too.

  7. College football is dead to me after week 3.
  8. Titans with a huge defensive hold! Vince opens the offensive series with a sack though. Then a six yard pass.
  9. I'm terrified of Kentucky right now. I have little doubt we'll be able to move the football on their weak defense, but I haven't seen anything from our defense to make me think we can make them punt once. Couple that with probable losses to Arkansas (no way we stop McFadden) and Alabama (John Parker Wilson will have fun since we don't seem to field a defense) and Fulmer's job could very well be in trouble.
  10. Dont be surprised if Michigan is back in the top 25. Also I expect Alabama and Kentucky to be ranked next week. Both deserve it. Tennessee is definitely out. Two lackluster performances, granted against top ten teams but still. Tennessee definitely will and should drop out. The losses did both come to top 10 teams, but we rolled over for both. Our performance alone doesn't warrant top 25 consideration.
  11. I agree with this completely. There should be some level of respect between coaches so that once it's quite clear the game is over, you don't keep piling on. It was not only classless, but also stupid when Meyer left Tebow in to do a QB DRAW on fourth and inches with a 29 point lead with 8 minutes to go in the fourth. What happens if Tebow suffers an injury in the pile-up and is out for a few weeks or even the season? And for what, so Urban Meyer can have his bloated ego stroked a little bit more because he beat Tennesse by 39 instead of 29? Meyer wouldn't be looking as much like a genius if Tebow were injured on that play. Or if the tackle on Harvin on the deep pass resulted in an injury. I like giving credit to coaches like Mark Richt who have the good sense and class to pull starters when the game's been decided (he did the last time Tennessee got demolished - pulled his starters in the third if I recall correctly - much like Fulmer did in the blowout over Georgia last year). There need to be more coaches with a little class and integrity. injuries is an angle I didn't think of. while the teams benefit from running up the score due to the computer polls (ie. Florida and USC have to run up the score, just look at what LSU and OU are doing with backups), who is going to be the first kid who has his career ruined so a team can impress a bunch of computers. Exactly. You never can tell when an injury is going to happen and severe ones are rare, but they do happen and are far more likely on plays such as QB draws where there is a huge pile of players on top of the ball carrier. Much as I hate Florida, I still hate to think of their players getting hurt, but what if Tebow broke a bone on the bottom of that pile or shredded something in his leg getting twisted down underneath the pile. Coaches who run up the score are putting their players at needless risk to feed their own overblown ego. It's a shame.
  12. Wow, Gus Malzahn must be running his type of offense there at Tulsa.

  14. I'm liking the logic. We basically have already increased payroll by 8% for 2008 without signing anyone new. Let's go for 8% more in the offseason. Wonder what percentage ARod's salary would increase payroll? 8-)
  15. I'm liking the logic.
  16. Glad Urban Meyer is such a good character guy, going for it on fourth down in a clear mismatch late in the game with a 29 point lead. And then a deep bomb after that. He and Spurrier truly are on in the same.
  17. good game Meph. Have fun winning the East.
  18. It looked to me like Arian just didn't pull the ball in. Probably a little of both of their faults. the ball was tossed into him. its not his fault, its ainges but its really not. its a direct result of the injury. its unfortunate but true. You may be right. Our defense sucks. i dunno. youre playing one of the best offenses in the nation. this isnt the 06 UF offense. It may be that we've played Florida and Cal and they make our defense look worse. But they've looked utterly clueless about how to play defense most of the year.

  21. Ainge is trying to keep his broken pinky finger as healthy as possible. It hasn't been a problem to this point, except for the one fumble. Handoffs are one of the biggest things that bother his hand.
  22. Doing everything we can to hand this game to the Crocs.
  23. I haven't dislike Arian Foster this much since the bowl game last year. This team can't make dumb mistakes like that.
  24. HUGE defensive stand by the Vols! We need to score something offensively.
  25. Not sure why Florida throws the ball at all against our defense. They should just run it down our throat.
