ESPN and the Sun-Times are reporting Pie's wrist is bruised after getting plunked. It makes all kinds of logical sense to let a kid who is likely to struggle anyway rest a bruise on his wrist. It's all about the manager putting his player's in the best position to succeed, is it not? I hope this is the case It's more consistent with what Hendry and Lou have said throughout the offseason. If they really had no faith in Pie, I doubt they would have clung to him the way they did in the Crawford and Roberts trade rumors.

It's all about the manager putting his player's in the best position to succeed, is it not? Ok, well that makes it more understandable. As much crap as Hendry and Lou are taking on the Pie issue, it seems they're actually being very careful as to when they put him in games. I like this tactic as it makes things easier for Pie. For now, put him in the best chances to succeed (i.e. not playing him against lefties who he's never been any good against and not playing him when he's injured) and as his confidence rises, leave him out there in the more difficult situations.

It's somewhat reminiscint of Tennessee's collapse last year against Ohio State - just on a much larger scale. I feel for you snood, hopefully the Jayhawks will hang on.
-
If Memphis hits their free throws, they are nearly unstoppable. This team is a little scary right now.
-
Much as I dislike Calipiari, I'm actually pulling for Memphis tonight. I'm thinking a Memphis/Kansas championship game would be quite a bit of fun to watch.
-
again - home/road splits. he is a much, much better hitter away from petco. Taking the roster as it stands today, I went with Greene. If Lou makes the right move (and I actually think he might) and moves DeRosa over to short, I'd change my mind to Roberts. I'm fairly confident that between Dempster, Lieber, Marquis, Gallagher, Marshall and Hart we can find two solid starters to go along with Z, Lilly and Hill - thus making it less important to go after a starting pitcher.

I realize that the IU search has created much more interest on the board, but South Carolina has a new head coach. It is Western Kentucky head coach Darrin Horn. For those of you giving Crean all the love for Dwyane Wade, it was Horn who got him to Marquette. No coach has ever won anything at a press conference, but for a 35 year old head coach, he crushed it. I am very excited about the future of South Carolina basketball. Today, Rivals.com's 9th rated player, Scotty Hopson verbals to Tennessee. Other rumors suggest Tyler Smith is staying at UT for another season. I am very excited about the future of Tennessee basketball. (Until we lose Asst Coach Tony Jones, that is...) Awesome news on Hopson - I was really hoping we'd pull him in. I'm also extremely excited about our future (especially with Tyler Smith likely returning), but I'm a tad worried about our ability to hit outside shots next year. Chism can hit the occassional three, but other than him we've basically got Cameron Tatum and, perhaps, Hopson who's strength is shooting from the outside. I like our inside game a lot, though. Chism, Crews and Williams should improve underneath and Tyler's shown a great ability to drive to the basket. -

I agree with most of this. I think she'd be excellent early on as UT's men's coach, but might struggle to get enough respect outside the state to be highly successful quickly. Give her a season or two, though, and I think she'd start finding success anywhere. I also don't recall her outright saying she would never be the UT men's basketball coach, just a strong hesitation in taking the job. It's a moot point now anyway with Pearl there, and too, I've heard she's leaning toward retirement in the next 5 years or so. -

Which four are you talking about as being "very good to great teams?" Is it USC/Nebraska/Tennessee/Penn State or FSU/Florida/Miami/LSU? Because if you are talking about Group A: then I disagree. USC has been consistantly good, but the other three, are pretty much hit or miss at this time. They can be good, but as of right now, Tenn/PSU/Neb are middle of the pack average teams in their conferences. Now if you are talking about Group B: I disagree. Miami and FSU has basically been mediocre since the start of the new century. At this point of time, Miami and FSU are recognizable based on school rep, moreso then on-the-field production. Of those 8 teams, only three of them (less then half) can be caterize as "good to great teams." The other 5 teams are.......need things to break right to have a good season. While Tennessee isn't an elite program right now by any means, to say we're "middle of the pack average," is overexaggerating our recent downtimes a bit. 2007: 10 wins and an SEC East title - lost the SEC Championship game with 2 late picks 2006 : 9 wins and a second place finish in the East 2005: 5-6 - most definitely a terrible year where every break went against us 2004: 10 wins and an SEC East title - gave an unbeaten Auburn (should've been in the National title game) everything they wanted 2003: 10 wins and a 3-way tie for the SEC East title There's no doubt we haven't been quite as good as I would have liked, but 10 wins a year (save one) and top two in the East four of the last five years (including twice being in the SEC Championship game) is better than middle of the pack SEC. RedFlash is a Bammer. 'Nuff said. Damn straight. And in less then two yrs, people are going to be jealous at the amont of talent that Saban has brought in, to a point people are going to use the old standard cliche "the coach bought these players" comments. And if you hated to hear Alabama and their 2008 class, just right till you hear about their 2009 class with Tana Patrick, Nico Johnson, Kendall Kelly, AJ McCaron, etc, etc. I'm telling you...Alabama will be in a major bowl game in 2 yrs, and the National Championship game in 2/3 yrs. Get use to it, now, and your disgust of Alabama will be held to a minimum. You're right that Bama's finally got a chance to turn things around (first time since the early to mid 90s right?) but there's also no reason whatsoever to think Saban will stick around for more than 4 years (at extreme most). Give me some reason to think this. I showed you plenty of evidence why we are not middle of the pack. We also have one of the best coaches in the SEC and a good, young offensive coordinator. I see no reason why we'll all of a sudden have a major dropoff. -

RedFlash is a Bammer. 'Nuff said. Good point. I forgot about that. Really, I've asserted for awhile now that without that 5 win year (I realize you can't omit the season, but still...) people wouldn't hate Fulmer nearly as much as they do. If a couple of breaks had gone our way (like the ball Cory Anderson had securely wrapped up that was popped out and conveniently wound up going out the back of the end zone when we had Bama beat) and that season ended up 7-8 wins - Fulmer wouldn't be as universally despised as he's gotten. His wins/arrests ratio hurt pretty badly. Yeah, while I'm not crazy about the arrests that have occured, I'm not convinced Fulmer's just letting guys run wild. When you're trying to deal with more than 100 college age kids, bad things are going to happen. Plus, when you're trying to win at an extremely high level, you can't only recruit angels. We had a rash of arrests early on this offseason, he disciplined them and I haven't heard of anything for a while now. I don't want to excuse the idiocy of the kids, but I can't place all (or even most) of the blame on Fulmer. At some point, these kids have to assume responsibility for their own actions. -
Many are speculating that this signing is to fill the void that will be caused when Pacman is traded or released. No doubt. Carr is pretty much only a return man from what I can tell (and what soccer said). I still would like to see Chris Davis in that role one more year, but if Carr can do the job and we aren't paying him much I have no real problem with it.

Since Tennessee decided to thoroughly crap the bed Thursday night, I have decided to root for Xavier on one side of the bracket and Davidson on the other. Not sure anybody really cares...but I decided to announce that proclamation anyway.

He's a decent return man, but nothing special, and didn't really play much at cornerback so I don't know much about his abilities there. Doesn't sound bad. Thankfully we don't have to give up a draft pick should we sign him. I wasn't really unhappy with Chris Davis' return skills last year, but apparently Titan management wasn't real happy with him.

Titans sign Raiders' restricted free agent Chris Carr to an offer sheet. The Raiders now have a week to match it. Soccer, what do you know about Carr? I know he's pretty young but not a whole lot else.

Well, at least Tennessee's good enough for me to be dissapointed that they lost a Sweet 16 game. Three years ago, it would have been a joke to even consider us making it this far.
-
you should also be happy that they didn't switch to this game. your game is closer, and the second half has been completely unwatchable thanks to the refs. Yea, I don't want to sound like I'm blaming anybody else for this (possible) loss besides Tennessee - but, the refs calling this game so freaking tight has completely negated our ability to mount any kind of a comeback. Tennessee is still embarassing themselves with missed shots and a lack of grabbing any rebounds, but the refs are definitely negating much of any hope the Vols may have left.
-
What a night to have one of our worst shooting days possible. This team is so much better than this, it's frustrating to see the season end this way (barring a great comeback). EDIT: Oh yea, they can't grab an offensive rebound to save their lives.
-
Agreed. Bilas, Aikman and Johnston are quite good - despite the fact that I really don't like their teams. Yeah, I especially want to hate Bilas, as a UNC fan. But he's actually pretty good at what he does, and I tend to agree with what he says. I'd like to see Gus Johnson and Jay Bilas paired up.
