I was fairly pleased with the Titans' play yesterday. The Bears did a good job of stuffing the run completely, but that would be expected with 8-9 in the box all day. I was extremely impressed with the passing game. As a team, the Titans rushed for negative yardage going in at halftime, and Heimerdinger made the adjustment then to open the offense and have Kerry Collins throw the football. It resulted in almost 300 yards passing and, perhaps, a chance to force teams to stop loading up the box. They likely will, though, and for good reason - it's much more likely that Collins will have a bad day than the LenDale/CJ duo. Brandon Jones is yet again coming into his own. He's shown flashes of being a #1 receiver in the past, but with the need to throw the football the past three games, he's really stepped up. In those three games (Colts, Packers, Bears) Jones has 16 catches for 156 yards. And the tight end duo (Bo Scaife and Alge Crumpler) is probably the best receiving duo of tight ends in the NFL. Without them, we probably lose two of the last three games. Finally, Rex Grossman is not a good quarterback. He missed some absolutely wide open receivers yesterday and made some unexplainably dumb decisions (scrambling out of the pocket and sliding for a loss instead of throwing the ball away, completing a pass to Matt Forte on a screen five yards behind the line of scrimmage with at least two Titans standing right beside Forte instead of throwing it at his feet). If Orton were the QB yesterday, there's a good chance the Bears would have pulled that one out. That said, I couldn't understand the lack of deep passes. The Titans are utterly susceptible to deep passes due to the man coverage, but Grossman only threw a couple (and completed both) that I remember seeing. He was under pressure somewhat (we've given a lot more pressure than that), but you've still got to get the ball down the field. This team could well enter the week 16 game against the Steelers at 14-0. I can't believe that's the case, but the biggest roadblock right now is a mediocre Jets team. Otherwise, we have the Jags, Lions, Texans and Browns left until the final two weeks. Gotta get homefield wrapped up before Pittsburgh.
