  1. I would tend to think the ultra-conservative offense had a lot to do with Ryan Fitzpatrick starting at QB for Cincy.
  2. Howry had an ERA+ of 84 last year with a WHIP of 1.458. Vizcaino posted an 87 ERA+ and a 1.457 WHIP. Howry's been better most other years. I don't see Vizcaino being an upgrade over Howry.
  3. Is DeRosa at third in your lineup? I kinda thought he'd replace either Asdrubal or Peralta, but third might be a decent option as well. Third in the lineup? Or do you mean playing third base? Peralta played a lot of third last year, so I'm not sure how that will all work out. I meant third base, sorry. BR has Peralta with just nine games played in his career at third, with just one there last year. Wow. I could have sworn he took over for Casey Blake last year. I must be losing my mind. Marte played a decent amount, but for the life of me I can think who else could have played third. According to BR, Blake played the first 74 games there before being traded, then Marte played 68, Jamey Carroll played 18, and Peralta and somebody played one each.

  6. That's a great question that I don't have an answer to. Except maybe this: they are the Bengals.
  7. If he has any say on how the offense is run they will never get out of the dumps. Chaney was ungodly awful as an OC at Purdue. If you look at just straight statistics you might think he was a pretty good OC but when he was around we had dominant offenses every year because we had great players. My family (some Purdue fans for over 80 years) used to scream and cuss almost every game over Chaney's play calling. If something works he will start doing something else to try and catch the defense off guard. For instance in games that Purdue would have almost 300 yards passing by halftime Chaney would have Purdue come out for the second half running. We used to play a QB1 style game when watching the games to see who could predict the play Purdue was about to run. No joke I was right about 70-75% of the time (had to name play type and primary direction). If I can guess what Chaney has called that much imagine what opposing defenses can do. It just happened that Tiller's spread offense makes it so 50% of the time you can't do anything to stop the offense as long as you have a good QB. Purdue had great QB's when Chaney was here so the offense succeeded in spite of him. In all seriousness I'm pretty sure I could have done better than Chaney as Purdue's OC. This doesn't sound good at all. Anytime someone starts telling you they can predict the play before it happens and including that in their rant, ignore everything. When they start saying they seriously could have done a better job as OC, tune them out forever. Go to most any message board of a non top 5 team and you'll find meatballs saying the same thing about their offensive coordinator. It's the cool and easy thing to do. 95% of the time they're wrong and vastly underestimate the complexity of what's going on and don't realize that OC's are not just calling a play on 2nd and 8 to be successful on 2nd and 8. They have a gameplan, they're doing things for a reason and they're trying to set up certain actions for future plays. Yeah, I didn't put much stock into knowing the play and being a better OC. But he still knows more about Chaney than I do (I've never heard of him before) so this being the first tidbit of opinion on him is discouraging. People here in Tennessee were saying the same thing about Tennessee's 07 offense that put up 35 points a game.
  8. I just hope we have Bradley for half the year. If we can get around 80-90 games from him, it might be worth the likely money. He's an upgrade, but I would've preferred Dunn.
  9. Late December back in '63. What a very special time for me, 'Cause I remember what a night. Oh, what a night. You know, I didn't even know her name, But I was never gonna be the same. What a lady. What a night. Oh, I. I got a funny feeling when she walked In the room and I, As I recall it ended much too soon. :-k Frankie Valli's "December, 1963 (Oh what a night)" Great song.
  10. This is all very discouraging news. I'm hoping more than ever that Lane calls his own plays. Heard this on the radio this morning and was hoping it wasn't true.

  12. A bit of news out there: Dick Jauron will be retained by Buffalo. Not a great decision, nor a terrible one. I'm not sure they'd have pulled one of the better coaches anyway. Mike Martz has been dismissed from the 49ers' OC position. Any team that needs offense should give him a call. And the Browns and Eric Mangini are going to chat about him potentially taking over there. That'd be a good hire, as I think he got a raw deal in New York. There have also been rumors that Cleveland will take the dual package of Scott Pioli (personnel) and Josh McDaniels from New England.
  13. Holmgren too maybe? Nope, he's sitting out a year and then thinking about coming back. That's why he's leaving the Seahawks.
  14. Eric Mangini and Romeo Crennel are probably available as defensive coordinators.
  15. Holmgren too maybe? I'd love to see Shanahan given the moon and full control over the offense, but I doubt he'd take it or the Bears would offer it. Though I argued in the other thread that Lovie should stay, Shanahan, Cowher or Schottenheimer would be upgrades over him without question. If Angelo felt he stood a very good chance of getting any of those three, it'd be smart - in my opinion - to fire Lovie.
  16. He deserves it after the collapse at the end of the year....I know the D is bad, but come on The D was historically bad. Second least efficient defense in the tracked statistical era (last 20 years), behind this year's Detroit defense. Do you think he deserved to stay on? Change was necessary, and at some point, wholesale change was needed. Denver was below average for most of the past few years (they were fortunate to win 8 this year, actually), so they decided to pull the trigger. They can do better, but who knows if they will. This could well be Cowher's new job.
  17. per MLBTR Unless the free 6.3MM allows us to do something else, I'm not sure I'm crazy about this. Vizcaino posted an 87 ERA+ last year with a 1.457 WHIP. From 04 to 06 he posted an ERA+ ranging from 116 to 132, but he's posted a 106 two years ago and 87 last year. Mediocre at best. Yeah, I'd only be ok with this if the Rockies are taking all of Marquis' contract. Vizcaino's had some good years in the past, but he's been awful lately. I'm assuming they're taking Marquis' and we'd take Vizcaino's. Maybe that 6 mil is what we need to be able to afford Bradley or someone.

  19. 37 points for me today, though Mizzou very nearly blew 32 points for me. That's nine out of 14 correct choices and I've finally broken triple digits, with 121. I kinda suck so far.
  20. Slightly, maybe. I don't think Pennington is solely the reason the Dolphins are better. It's a mixture of numerous good moves (Fasano, Ayodele, Pennington, etc) and much better coaching. And much, much, much better health. Remember, the Dolphins were starting their 6th string running back, 3rd string quarterback, #3 and #4 wide receivers, #3 tight end, #5 and #6 safeties, #2 and #3 corners, #5 and #6 linebackers, #4 and #5 defensive tackles by week 10 last year. Dolphins were not a good team from jump, but they weren't 1-15 bad by any stretch of the imagination with adequate quarterback play and health. Good point, I had forgotten about the injuries. Either way, Pennington wasn't the savior he's made out to be - he was a nice addition, but there were numerous other factors as to why the Dolphins are 11-5.
  21. That was a very, very weird and uncomfortable exchange. I don't understand that line of questioning at that time.
  22. This makes me sad. Andre was the LAST PERSON I would have thought that would get in trouble and be sent home. Not the way I imagine Dre' career at the Capstone would end. This also make me :banghead: . Agents knows they can get college football players in trouble, by simply talking to them, and yet these scumbags still do this. I'm not excusing Dre, but I wish there would be consequences to the "agents" if there are caught talking to college players. Something like having their agent license either suspended or flat out voided, would be a start. Yeah, I'm sure the agents are far more privy to the rules than are the college kids. The kids should still get in trouble, but a little negative repercussions for the agents would be nice as well.
  23. I'm not sure they'll fire him, but they should. Or at least get a GM and take away his personnel decisions.
  24. I love that we always talk in terms of hiding our QB's flaws, rather than just getting an actual good QB. True, though not that many teams have good QBs. Most have to build a team to minimize the QBs flaws. Like the Titans, though, the Bears' QB just has more flaw than many of the others. And there's not much QB depth in this draft. Stafford and Bradford will go early, but otherwise you might have Tebow and Mark Sanchez and then seniors include Rhett Bomar (very interesting), Josh Freeman, Graham Harrell and Nathan Brown. No sure fire good/great QBs after the top two. Yeah, but this has been going on forever. There's always an excuse why we can't have a good QB. It's never anyone's fault. Yada yada. Bullpucky. Heads should roll over this, and they never do. Teams that sustain success in this league nearly always have a franchise-calibre QB guiding the ship for the long term. Yes, it's hard to find the guy -- but it needs to be a higher priority for our franchise. Until it is, you'll probably see periods of about a decade in between a year or two of success. Then back down into the doldrums again for another several years. You won't see Indy/NE type success until you've got your Manning/Brady, in all likelihood. I agree. To sustain success, there has to be a franchise QB. You can let one like Orton plug a hole for a couple of years, but eventually he'll have to be replaced.
