  1. I'd love to see TO on the Raiders. That would be fun. Yep, it's official. I'm definitely picking a second team to root for next year until Al Davis croaks/gives up the team. Hey, at least it'd be hard for TO to make things worse.
  2. If we were to sign Hudson (which we won't, but should) I'd much rather see him start at SS and platoon Fontenot/Theriot at 2B. Hudson hasn't played an out at SS in his ML career If he's got great range at second, he'd be worth a shot. "Much rather" was probably too strong, though. We know Fontenot doesn't have the best of range, so I'd like to see Hudson try it. If this ever happened.
  3. Isn't Nick Johnson their first baseman? They may be thinking of starting three of them in the OF, putting one at first for when Johnson's hurt and keeping the other two as the fourth and fifth outfielders. Otherwise, a trade would have to be coming, I would think.
  4. I remember that, but it wasn't a few years ago, that was a LONG time ago. That had to be 1998 or something. Wow, my sense of time is apparently awful. I thought it was from 2001-2003 range, but you're right, it was June of 1998.
  5. They probably figure they're going to get nothing better, so they might as well take what's out there.
  6. It's now reported on ESPN.com that it's a two-year deal. No money reported, but they said details should come tomorrow.
  7. If we were to sign Hudson (which we won't, but should) I'd much rather see him start at SS and platoon Fontenot/Theriot at 2B.
  8. Bobby Cox pulled him in the middle of an inning one game a few years ago. Cox felt he was dogging it on a catch in center, so he stopped the game and made Andruw trot off the field and sent somebody else on. So yes, his motivation has always been questioned. He just hit new lows last year.
  9. No worse than a 114 OPS+ in a season since 1997. 126 OPS+ in 05 and 06 and a 120 OPS+ last year. Impressive offensive numbers. But he apparently can't play defense. He also hasn't played less than 156 games since 1999. It depends largely on depth (Bradley's better but will get hurt) and exactly how bad Abreu's defense is. I've heard ranges from bad enough to negate his offensive contribution to bad but not excessively so.
  10. Wait, I thought this was the 2009 offseason thread. Favre retired in 2008...or was it 2007? Crap I don't remember. It's a recurring nightmare we must endure every year from now until the end of eternity. It's a punishment of sorts, I presume.
  11. Free agents: TJ Housmandzadeh, Antonio Bryant, Devery Henderson, Lance Moore Trades: Anquan Boldin and maybe Torry Holt Draft: Percy Harvin, Jeremy Maclin (pipedream), Michael Crabtree (pipedream), Darrius Heyward-Bey, Kenny Britt, Derrick Williams, Hakeem Nicks, Mohammed Mossaquoi If we go the veteran route, I'd want either Houshmandzadeh or Boldin. If it's the draft, assuming Maclin and Crabtree don't fall to us, I'd look at Harvin or Bey. Knowing the Titans, though, they'll just take a running back.
  12. I'd love to see TO on the Raiders. That would be fun.
  13. I voted nothing as well. Much like what Derwood inferred, if you start throwing out the records of people who cheated today (especially if you don't have hard evidence), to be consistent you also much throw out the records of every person ever suspected of cheating who ever played the game. I'm not crazy about having guys in the record books who were juiced up, but what makes one form of cheating worse than another? If you're going to start throwing out records, you have to dig back into the past and throw out records of everyone else who cheated - and use the same standards you are now. If you throw out the records of suspected, but not proven, users, throw out the records of guys who played in the 20s-70s who were suspected of cheating as well.
  14. Since we obviously don't have enough football threads at this point, I figured I'd add one more. I'll start the thread off with a bit of interesting news: Brett Favre may finally be done playing football.
  15. hat's wrong with the unit? i'd have loved him on a one year deal if i knew we weren't get the peavster Not for $8M with incentives. I wouldn't give him that either (althrough he was def. worth that last season), but still..... it's not like Sabean was saving us from some awful player We already have one pitcher in our rotation who we can pretty much guarantee misses significant playing time. Why have another? Because they are good pitchers? So if someone said you could have another Rich Harden (I'm not saying Johnson is Harden, just giving an example), you wouldn't want it because you already have one? Plus even though Johnson would be a health risk, I don't understand how you can pretty much guarantee he's miss significant time, considering he made 30 starts last season and has made less than that only one time in the last 5 seasons. I mean, really, would 20-25 starts of an ERA around 4 on a one year deal be an awful thing? If we had the money we did with the Trib, then sure, but as is now, we really couldnt afford to take a chance on such a thing. On a one-year deal, I don't really see a problem. (Did he sign for more years? I'm not sure.) If we have enough in the budget now, we could sign him and then, by the all-star break, I'd think Ricketts would be in place and could up our money available by 5-8 million for a deadline deal.
  16. Make you do all the work, I figure.
  17. Sadly, apparently, yes. I had to make concessions to get the promotion.
  18. I've seen Bear fans who wanted David Carr to come into Chicago for a shot to backup. That's not happening.
  19. I had to make concessions to get the promotion. I'm disappointed that you would throw away your core values that easily just for a promotion Vance.
  20. Congratulations to all four. It's quite well deserved. And I do like the idea of hot chicks posted with impunity. :D
  21. they have bradley hitting 290/400/520 in 490 ab and fukudome hitting 290/390/440 in 460 ab. this team is constructed very well if those things happen. That'd be the second most ABs of Bradley's career. I'll be shocked if he comes close to it, but utterly ecstatic.
  22. If you disregard the Dusty factor, these seem like two no-risk signings for the Reds. I think quite a lot of teams will have a couple of MLB vets as NRI's in spring training; it seems to be part of everyone's annual "you never know..." routine. Yeah, I don't think either is a bad signing on the face of it. The problems start when you consider Dusty is the manager. Ward will start every Sunday when Dusty sports his forefit lineup. Gawd that use to piss me off. Exactly why these signings - which on the face of it are pretty good - will likely turn very, very bad for Reds fans.
  23. Yeah scouts definitely serve a large role in assessing talent. That's why I threw in the caveat that he might have seen something the stats don't show. There's very little evidence showing that Miles could improve upon his career year, but if Hendry proves me wrong I'll be thrilled. Just because I disagree (vehemently in this case) with a move he makes doesn't mean that I don't give him credit elsewhere. He's done a decent job overall, I just fail to see the logic in this move.
