  1. no DB has ever been drafted #1 2010 draft rankings: http://cfn.scout.com/2/856941.html Thanks. Didn't expect there was one - I wonder if it's justifiable?
  2. I guess we signed Hunter Cantwell and not Graham Harrell. Not cool. I actually like Cantwell better than Harrell as an NFL prospect.
  3. Berry without a doubt. But I agree both are top 10 prospects. Berry's pass coverage abilities are superior to Mays. Yeah, I thought I heard questions about Mays' speed when he was considering leaving early, and there's certainly no doubt about Berry's speed. Mays, I believe, has better physical attributes (size, build, etc). This has me wondering a couple things as well: what are the chances one of them could go #1 overall (especially with Berry's playmaking ability and his tutelage under Monte Kiffin this year)? And has there ever been a DB (especially safety) who has been taken #1 overall?
  4. Mayock is so much better than Kiper it isn't funny. Also, I like that NFL network always has a couple of front office people on the set along with a coach or two. It is interesting to hear what the teams are thinking from people that have actually been in the situation. For example having Mike Lombardi, who was in the Raiders draft war room for many years, was quite entertaining whenever the Raiders made one of their idiotic picks. Yeah, I agree on Mayock over Kiper. Charles Davis is also very good, though his UT ties may have me a bit biased. Charley Casserly is a very interesting analyst.
  5. Mississippi State's shot blocker Jarvis Varnado is entering the draft without an agent.
  6. Ok, maybe I'm looking ahead too much but I'm thinking a bit about the 2010 draft and had a question for the west coasters. If you had the choice between safeties for your NFL team, which would you prefer: Eric Berry or Taylor Mays. I'd prefer Berry, but I'm not sure if that's my bias toward the UT player or not. Figured the west coast guys could shed some light on my potential bias. Either way, next year could be an oddity of having two safeties go in the top 10 picks.
  7. That stinks I really like him. :( I wondered what happened to him. He's definitely awesome at getting scoops and whatnot.
  8. Speaking of Mort. It's become clearer and clearer that he is getting lapped by the younger guys in the business. He had nothing to add to the draft discussion. The draft isn't usually his strength, is it? He's normally more of a guy who uses his connections for roster moves during the season (scooping trades, signings, who's hurt, etc.). He's always been an integral part of ESPN's draft coverage. But he's been less and less notable for a couple years, in and out of the season. He's gotten several stories wrong and flat out missed some major ones. And this weekend he was a non-entity. I've been relying so much on NFL Network coverage that I hadn't even realized Mort had dropped off so much.

The draft isn't usually his strength, is it? He's normally more of a guy who uses his connections for roster moves during the season (scooping trades, signings, who's hurt, etc.). Even then, Jay Glazer and Adam Schefter break way more news. That is true. Mort is good for gameday stuff, but Schefter and Glazer are quite good at breaking pretty much everything else.

  11. The Titans have signed UDFA Alex Mortensen from Arkansas - the son of ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
  12. i still can't get over it. you have a franchise LT in Oher and DT in Jerry fall in your laps at 20 and you opt for a luxury position in TE. now they're still stuck starting Jeff Backus and Chuck Darby. Delmas would be acceptable if they didn't already use 2nd rounders the last two years with Gerald Alexander and Bullocks. so now Paris Lenon stays put. a team ridden with pressing holes did virtually nothing to patch up any of them, save maybe QB. nasty. I don't really have a problem with taking purely BPA because the Lions have so many needs - there's no way to fill them all this draft. So, I can understand the idea of just injecting some talent the coaching staff feels comfortable with this draft and then looking more at filling holes next year. And if Schwartz's draft strategy is similar to Fisher/Reinfeldt's then he'll value BPA over need in the draft anyway. What I didn't understand was passing on a legit franchise LT like Oher - especially for a non-necessary position.
  13. Yeah, the Eagles just barely missed my top 5. Lions would have been there as well if they would have taken Oher instead of Pettigrew. And I agree with you that the Jets did the right thing if Sanchez develops into a franchise QB. But I didn't see either of these QBs as guys you give up multiple picks to get. They're smarter than me, though, so we'll see if they're right on him.
  14. I thought Matt Shaughnessy went a round too early, but otherwise no major overdrafts on day 2. Getting Louis Murphy in round 4 was a great value, I thought. Mel Kiper did say he talked to one team that thought Michael Mitchell was a 3rd round pick and will be a pro bowler for the Raiders. From what I've heard in this thread, that was likely the Bears. It's a little disconcerting to know that Angelo was ready to reach with the Raiders on Mitchell, but who knows? Kiper isn't the end-all, be-all of draft analysis, much as ESPN would like us to think so. There have been plenty of picks that he thought were bad that turned out good. Maybe Mitchell turns out OK. Still, it can't be seen as a value pick at all. It's a reach -- but sometimes even reaches work out. Kiper actually said that same thing on Mike and Mike this morning. He said he talked to numerous GMs after the draft about Mitchell and most had him in the late rounds or as an UDFA. The Raiders and the other unnamed team were the only ones with a high grade on him.
  15. Best 5 drafts in order, in my opinion: 1. Patriots - expected with all the picks they had 2. Falcons - Great top of the draft and filled needs throughout 3. Bears - Didn't have a first rounder obviously, but got second round value with both 3rd round picks and got some nice steals late 4. Giants - Surprisingly good talent for drafting late in nearly every round. Nicks and Barden were fantastic picks. 5. Bengals - Got three of the most talented players in the draft with picks 6, 38 and 70. Three 1st to second round talents. Worst 4 drafts, in order, in my opinion: 1. Raiders - Two major reaches early, a lesser reach after that and one very good value. 2. Bucs - Traded up for a high risk, high reward QB with other needs in place. 3. Broncos - Much like the Cutler fiasco, focused on offense for some reason. Knowshon is a great player, but they had to go defense more often. 4. Jets - Not on the brink of a Super Bowl, but they traded a 2nd round pick and a couple useful players (one young, solid guy in Elam) for a pretty good QB.

  17. It's actually Darry.
  18. Sounds similar to the Titans' selection of William Hayes last year. Granted Hayes was taken in the 4th round, but they traded up to get him. Most experts (Mayock, Kiper and McShay included) didn't have him being drafted. Hayes appears to have been worth the pick, though.
  19. He's not that much worse than most of his career. In his best four seasons he had ERA+s of 145, 120, 107 and 100. Besides that his ERA+s have been between 56 and 74. I never realized this, but he pitched in 16 games at 20 years old. He's been in the majors for significant parts of 8 seasons - and he's just 27.
  20. NFL.com has him listed as a guard. Interesting. Sounds like another athlete. Or a mix-up. Athlete. So the filter thinks "fullback" is a curse word? Charlie Weis approves. I thought that was weird and didn't understand why . . . until somebody pointed out to me what it begins and ends with.
  21. how do you decide which teams to root for? cubs, rockets and 49ers??? joe montana ruined a generation of football fans. oh, but the marino sniffers are way worse, he never won anything. Give him the talent the 49ers had and Marino almost certainly would have won at least one ring. It's a little like saying Ron Santo isn't as good as Joe Morgan because Santo doesn't have a ring.
  22. Oh come on KC, at least take the hometown guy Wolfert if it's going to be a kicker for Mr. Irrelevant. I actually like Succop. He could be a solid kicker for them.
  23. Very happy with the Titans' draft. Now I'm interested to see what UFAs they pick up.
  24. Chiefs select Ryan Succop, K, from South Carolina.
