  1. He was traded to make room for Peavy, correct? We should have acquired Peavy first, THEN traded DeRo. We could have afforded both DeRo and Milton Bradley on the same team. If you don't pay Aaron Miles there's a bunch of money right there. I was for trading DeRosa this offseason while his value was high since we had Fontenot ready to step in. I was in favor of trading him independent of getting Peavy or any other particular target. I was just surprised that Hendry couldn't get more for him. I'm only for trading a valuable piece of a team if you get a deal you can't pass up. I think the players acquired are getting overly criticized by many, but the deal could easily have been passed up. I like Branch Rickey's saying, "It's better to sell too soon than too late." I agree, but you've also got to consider replacing the player you're trading. And are you really trading high when you don't get max value?

  3. do you really think that's reflective of his true ability level, though? sure, he hasn't started hot, but he's absolutely a better option than anyone we actually have in the organization. EDIT: also it's still way early and so on. if he goes 4-4 with 4 singles today, his obp is .328 and his ops is 790. I don't think it's so far from his ability level going forward that we should be angry that he's not around to play corner infield everyday. Trading DeRosa wasn't a problem, replacing his spot on the roster with Miles and Gathright was. Also, DeRosa is 0 for 4 today. How much of an impact do you think being in a new league with pitchers he hasn't seen as often as NL pitchers has? I tend to think his numbers would be better (even if not a lot better) if he was still in the NL with the Cubs.
  4. 63 on the first one. Forgot most of the Big East basketball schools, Iowa State, Minnesota and Maryland. Rutgers was the only BE football school I forgot. 67 on the second. Again, my biggest hindrance was basketball schools. Forgot Marquette, Providence and Seton Hall for non-football. In football I forgot Rutgers, South Florida and Boston College. On the pro sports one, I got just 77. I was going good and then just froze and couldn't remember obvious ones. I only got about 4 NHL teams - which was expected.
  5. I agree. Last night I was working under the assumption that 6 weeks would be a minimum. Now that it looks somewhat realistic, I doubt a trade happens. I'd still like Durham, but I just doubt Lou would put up with Fontenot's defense at third for a long period of time. We probably are looking at Freel and Scales at third for the forseeable future.
  6. I'm tempted to go with the super offense route and pick Durham at 2B and Fontenot at 3B. Maybe with Scales as a 3B defensive replacement? I'll wait to vote.
  7. I put a waiver claim in on Manny, but being 9th on the waiver list I'm not sure I'll get him. I'm taking a pretty big risk by getting Manny now since my league has only three bench spots, but I think it's worth the risk. My starting lineup is: C: Soto 1B: Votto 2B: Pedroia 3B: Aramis :( SS: Jeter 2B/SS: Aviles 1B/3B: Cantu OF: Sizemore OF: Granderson OF: Bradley OF: Tavares OF: Cust UTIL: Uggla This will leave only Mark Reynolds on my bench as I'm cutting Hideki Matsui. I also have one bench spot filled by a pitcher, but I may cut one of my pitchers. I figure most of my offensive players are healthy enough (save for Bradley) and I'm leading my league by a pretty wide margin. Am I crazy?
  8. The reason for there to be more worry about Aramis than the bullpen is because it's far easier to patch together a decent bullpen than it is to find a very productive third baseman. We all expect Bradley, Lee, Soto, etc. to start hitting closer to their career norms, but what if two of those three don't? There's ample reason to believe that Soto and Lee won't get back to what we expected and without Aramis, the offense isn't nearly as imposing as it once was.
  9. It didn't seem relatively cheap at the time. I wasn't real high on Mitre, but was very high on Pinto and Nolasco. I'm afraid they'll want a similar type package (or more) for Cantu and it'd be hard for us to deliver that. Kevin Hart, Jose Ascanio, and Jeff Stevens would be a similar package to that. Its giving up a lot, but if its necessary its necessary. Anyway, unless Ramirez is expected to miss the season, I dont expect them to go aftr Cantu at a price like that. One of the 3 Orioles or Garrett Atkins would be a lot cheaper. We could probably get one of them for Aaron Heilman and Kevin Hart or something similar. Maybe the O's would take Jake Fox and Kevin Hart. I'd be shocked if Kevin Hart or Jose Ascanio are as highly rated as Mitre or Nolasco (especially Nolasco). I don't think Stevens is as high as Pinto was either. It's not the best way to judge them, but Nolasco and Pinto were both top 10 prospects in a very strong Cubs system. Hart is the only one of those three in the top 10 of a very weak Cubs system.
  10. Put Theriot, Johnson and Freel on the field at the same time and watch the grit fly.

  12. He was considered one of the best D-line coaches in the game before he was hired by the Lions. so what. 0-16. Some great position coaches just don't do well as head coaches. Take Ed Orgeron for example. Fantastic D-line coach at USC, awful head coach at Ole Miss, nothing but rave reviews of him from Saints D-linemen last year and now hired at Tennessee as the D-line coach. It happens.
  13. He can hit the ball well and we're desperate. That's enough for me - if he doesn't cost an arm and a leg. *cough cough* JAKE FOX Ok, he can play a little defense too.
  14. If we offer up Vitters and/or Colvin, probably. Thats like saying if we offer up a brand new BMW and/or a half eaten Big Mac Seriously though, I wouldnt trade Vitters for a rent player, but he is arb eligible, and the Marlins might be inclined to trade him before the time comes. I think Colvin can become a good outfielder in time. Though I agree, there's a big dropoff between Vitters and Colvin. And I think the Marlins would be willing to trade Cantu, but given that he's tearing the cover off the ball and they're winning a few games, he won't come cheap.
  15. That'd be better than the status quo, but I have my doubts that it'd be a feasible alternative. I just don't think Fontenot can hold down third on a long term basis.

  17. If we offer up Vitters and/or Colvin, probably. He is arbitration eligible after the year, so they might consider it if we give them a big haul. I wouldn't give up what they'd likely want, though.
  18. Judd Sirott said in the postgame he'd have "tests" done tomorrow. Thanks. Wonder when we'll hear something?
  19. Can they do an MRI on him tomorrow? And if they do, would we hear something definitive Sunday or have to wait til Monday?
  20. Not nearly enough . . .
  21. He was considered one of the best D-line coaches in the game before he was hired by the Lions.
  22. Absolutely. Id be thrilled, but even then, you have to be very cautious with him. I wonder if that timetable gets him back at least 80% or so? If it does, he should be fine. Otherwise, he may not be close to the Aramis we know and love this season.
  23. Cantus by far the best option, with the Orioles trio and Atkins the most realistic. Im betting that once they find out what Aramis' status is, hendry will get to work. Even if Its just a 6 weeks thing, I wouldnt be opposed to Wiggington since he can play all around the field and be of use down the line. Wigginton would make Miles that much more unnecessary. I'd be fine with him or any of the O's trio. Cantu will likely cost too much. We might be able to dump some MiL pitching (Hart/Adkins/Wells/Stevens/Gaub/Archer - maybe one-two of those) to get Beltre. I just wish Durham played third base.
