  1. No, grabbing the facemask now matter how light is a 5 yard penalty and automatic first down. Its 15 if you twist them. So either way it would have been a first down. No...there is no light penalty anymore. It's 15 or nothing. The 5 yard one has been gone for 2 years. Yeah, if there's no pulling or twisting, it's not a facemask penalty anymore. If you just brush against it or bump it, it's not called anymore.
  2. Such is life in the NFL. The highs are high, and the lows? Very low. No kidding. Enter the bye week 5-3 and adding Randy Moss, now two weeks later we're .500, Moss has one catch and we don't have a QB of the present or the future (though the latter may be Rusty Smith).
  3. Back to back wins gets me ever closer to the top of the league. If NC doesn't pull it out this week, I'll be just a game behind him even after all the boasting. :D
  4. Davis had a .275 BABIP last year with a 22.2 LD%. Just based on luck, he'll be better than last year. The question is would he rebound back to 2008 or 2009?
  5. No, but Hendry is a scout by trade. He's a bad GM, but is probably good at picking up who does/doesn't have good swing mechanics. We could point to the DeRosa and Edmonds pickups as evidence of that. Maybe he saw something he likes? Was that what happened with Barrett? Yep, Hendry apparently loved Barrett's mechanics and tools for a while and felt like he'd be a breakout candidate.
  6. 3.91 xFIP with a 7.26 k/9 and 2.27 BB/9. That's much, much better than he's ever been before, though, so the likelihood of him keeping it up is pretty small. Maybe worth a minor league invite, but no more.
  7. Tyler Bray looked like a freshman against Vandy, but that may be a good thing. Vanderbilt exposed some of Bray's weaknesses and as poorly as he played, it should keep him grounded entering a tough game against Kentucky. Vandy's defense will also probably be tougher than UK's this weekend, so it was a good test for him. The problem is, Vandy gave UK a gameplan to stop Bray. The good thing is, the coaching staff will have a week to figure out how to overcome that gameplan. Saturday is a winnable game. I've said all year that this game isn't as tough as the Ole Miss game and I still think it's a better matchup. The key is going to be containing the big plays. Cobb, Locke and Hartline can't break the big plays against us. If we can contain them and make them move down the field methodically, they'll make mistakes. We should be able to move the ball offensively, we just can't commit stupid turnovers. Win this and we're in the Music City Bowl (most likely). That'd be big for the staff and players.
  8. Who would have thought the Titans would completely melt down and Randy Moss wouldn't be involved in any way? I believe Vince has finally done enough to convince even Bud Adams to send him on his way. It's a shame, he's an exceptionally talented player, he just can't get it all together. Here's a good recap of the circus-esque atmosphere from last night. Looks like Rusty Smith as the starter for the majority of the rest of the season. He looked ok yesterday, but was clearly a rookie. As for the game, the offense looked horrid and the defense was pretty mediocre. Penalties really hurt us (along with a couple of blatant holding penalties not called late in the game against Washington), but we played like crap. We've gone from a team I thought was a shoe-in to make the playoffs before the San Diego game to probably struggling to top .500 just three games later.
  9. Does Michael Barrett fall under this? The previous four years combined prior to becoming a Cub he had a 70 OPS+. Chris Davis' is 95. Yeah, that's the point TT made. In Barrett's case, I remember Hendry loved his tools and potential, I wonder if it's the same thing with Davis (if Hendry is pursuing him)? Barrett was actually not bad offensively for a few seasons. Before coming to the Cubs, Barrett was actually worse than Davis has been. Hendry liked his tools, though, and the Cubs were able to fix him and make him a very good offensive catcher for three years. That's what I'd hope Jaramillo could do for Davis if Hendry traded for him – get that light on and get him hitting well for a first baseman. Discipline can be difficult to fix, though.
  10. Plate discipline is definitely a significant issue. If Chirinos or Castillo is all we have to give up to try to fix that, though, I'd be all for it.
  11. If cost is an issue – and if we're looking in-house only then it is – I really doubt we'd have enough to lure Mazzone out. He'd be a great hire, though.
  12. I remember a number of players have said they've learned quite a bit just talking to Maddux about pitching. I have no idea where to start looking for quotes from any of them, however, so take it as you will.

  14. That's exactly who I was thinking about. Good to see I wasn't crazy (at least on that issue). Wonder how he'd do as the ML pitching coach?
  15. Not an irreplaceable job, but definitely one that will be very tough to replace. Hendry will have to make a very good hire to not see dropoff from Rothschild. This move really hurts, I think. Isn't there a pitching coach somewhere in the minors (a roving instructor or something) that some on here are high on? I could just be completely making that up, but I think I remember somebody somewhere in our minor leagues. If I'm crazy on that one, where is Rick Peterson? He might be an option and I know those on here have been high on him in the past.
  16. That was me. I was going off the top of my head and couldn't remember how close he was to a .400 OBP, so I went the conservative route.
  17. Hopefully this will lessen what the NCAA decides to do, but probably not.
  18. I hadn't even looked at his WAR, that's pretty impressive. Because of the injury concerns, I wouldn't want him on more than a one-year deal (maybe a vesting second year based on games played or something?) but I think he'd be a solid stopgap until we free up some more money for somebody younger and more dependable. I really don't get the comparisons to Overbay and the rest. Johnson is solid and, other than Dunn, a Johnson/Davis duo addition is probably the best we could do this offseason considering what's out there.
  19. Until I saw the contracts each signed, I wanted Cameron over Byrd. Cameron had the better offensive track record over the course of his career and was better defensively. The only thing I knew of that Byrd had on Cameron was age, but I thought that would lead to Cameron getting a shorter, cheaper contract and Byrd getting a longer one than he did. I was perfectly happy with the Byrd contract when signed, though.
  20. I would probably classify him as high risk, low reward. If Johnson could actually stay healthy (the risk), he's likely to approach a .400 OBP. He won't slug a ton, but a .400 OBP is a pretty good reward if we can get him on a one-year deal. If it's either Davis or Johnson, though, I'd go with Davis for the upside. I'd actually like to see us add both, though, and Davis can fill in when Johnson gets hurt.
  21. The K:BB ratio is closer for Davis and Francoeur than for Davis and Gordon. Davis has been far, far more productive in the minors than Frenchie, though. As I posted earlier, similarly productive to Gordon. Frenchie did it as a younger guy and was a starter in MLB at 21. Davis racked up his numbers playing A-AAA in his 20's. There was one intersection year in that. Davis at 21 hit 1.059 at AA. Frenchie at 21 hit .808 at AA. 367 to 124 in PAs, though, in favor of Frenchie so sample size is an issue.
  22. The K:BB ratio is closer for Davis and Francoeur than for Davis and Gordon. Davis has been far, far more productive in the minors than Frenchie, though. As I posted earlier, similarly productive to Gordon.
  23. The good thing about the pitching is that it's very young for the most part (Wells, Marmol, Cashner, relievers, etc) and can improve on its own. The offense, however, is mostly veterans (with the exception of Castro and Soto) and likely needs a free agent/trade infusion to significantly improve. The good thing about Davis is that he's young, has upside and has crushed minor league pitching. The bad thing is, so far, he's been pretty bad in the majors.
  24. Oh yes, Alex Gordon, definitely. Can you provide some examples of their similarities as players/hitters? Chris Davis career wOBA (minors and majors together): .325 Alex Gordon career wOBA (minors and majors together): .323 Gordon has twice as good a K/BB ratio, but they've been similarly productive thus far in the majors. I like Gordon more because of the peripherals, but I can see the comparison.
  25. You're right. He's no Rivera. He's better. In K/9, sure. Other than that, no. He's too wild and has an odd delivery. I'd hate to give him a four-year extension and then see him blow out his arm in two years. That's my biggest concern. As long as he stays healthy, I think Marmol is likely to be very effective and worth a long term deal. I have no clue how long he'll stay healthy for, though.
