  1. Players should do what Theriot did as far as reading the sign from the C, scouting reports on the hitter, and cheat where the ball is likely headed, it's not a matter of a player having to do so b/c they lack range as Every fielder should do that. Blanco is a better defender than Theriot at SS, though.
  2. 2006 report on Fitzgerald from the PG showcase. It is telling that Fitzgerald attended the AFLAC games which is one of the premier HS events. He committed to GA Southern, but I'm assuming didn't qualify, had a change of heart, or was using it as leverage as far as getting drafted but didn't work out.
  3. Fwiw, Theriot was cheating on the play as far as reading the sign from the C and location and taking a couple of steps to his left because the pitch was away from Ramirez, this is something Ripken did throughout his career to help his below avg. quickness at SS. Ramirez instead of hitting it where it was pitched and going back up the box, rolled over the pitch, but is strong enough to hit it well enough to get through there with Theriot out of position.
  4. He was signable from the start, he projects as a utility guy as the main thing that hurts him is his lack of speed. These local news stories don't know much about the ins and outs, so it wouldn't surprise me if a writer didn't really understand how the value was between school and actual signing bonus. Maybe it's $80 in signing and $35 in scholarship to get up near slot, or whatever. Perhaps the kid doesn't get it himself. A major-leaguer wouldn't say he's signed when he hasn't signed and is negotiating his bonus, for example. But whatever. Seems that Wilken talked about his hitting. Guys who can hit, with power, can get opportunities. Sounds like he'll need to hit, and if he doesn't, he won't have speed or defensive greatness to fall back on. But if he hits, anything can happen even if he's slow. I heard today that he signed for 125K not 80K.
  5. Hopefully, I'll get to get in before the gates open and meet Hank Aaron, I think ESPN will be televising the game, but I definitely know they're doing some pre-game stuff before the gates open.
  6. If Matchulat starts to develop and mature, the tools are there for him to become quite a sleeper.
  7. He's not going to be 100% until he has surgery on his shoulder & even after that, there's not guarantee that he'll be where he was before. He hasn't been healthy all year and is trying to get by, IMO.
  8. I don't buy it, it happens too much in college basketball at solid every program that does well recruiting like U of I or schools that changes coaches and they bring in their own recruits. It's the nature of the beast. Sugarcoat it as far as him leaving the program, but the only reason they had to make that press release is because of the Jordan name. Jeffrey prob. is an outstanding student and busting his rear end off for Weber which is why he got it a few months ago for his hard work.
  9. There's probably some late recruit that U of I didn't think they were in on that will likely come in for the upcoming season or that there would be a scholly avail. for a recruit that isn't there and needed it. They did embarrass him, they just made it look like his choice of leaving.
  10. Why would they want him as a walk-on after they improved the squad as he was likely the last guy to make the team (that likely has reasons beyond basketball talent/nepotism)? He basically got cut. He worked hard at U of I with minimal talent, I believe that he knew if they were to get a better player, the scholly would go to that player. But with the roster limit at 13, there were probably better walk-ons than him and he was cut. Not this BS story of wanting to concentrate on academics. He was likely doing fine academically as a student-athlete.
  11. Right, having Michael Jordan involved with the U of I program was an awful thing. I with Jeff would have kept playing, but understand him not wanting to do so. He probably wanted to keep playing but there wasn't room for him. It's a polite way of saying, "we have someone better than you but we need that back to get him, you're probably better off leaving gracefully." Every team does it, it's just funny how some sugarcoat it as it's better than getting cut. Also, you're lying to yourself or for some reason I can't figure out a Jeffrey Jordan fan b/c he wasn't very good. If I was an Illini fan, I would be pleased that the scholly might go to someone more useful than someone who's there b/c of his father. What limited action he had that I seen, he wasn't very good. Do you have me foed? No, should I? What you said was completely different than that phony statement was that made to the press yesterday about wanting to concentrate solely on academics. I'm sure they told him what you said as far as needing that scholly for another player, but what was said to the public was different.
  12. I guess this is a form of spam, since I am promoting it but I don't profit from them, but I've given advice to some of these kids and attend these types of events so, if you want to delete it, go ahead... The Chicago White Sox are hosting the Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe Classic on Friday July 10th, 2009 at US Cellular. It's an event that pays respect towards the history and tradition of the Negro Leagues by showcasing the up and coming inner-city ball players. The elite inner-city kids from across the country will play an East-West all-star game in unforms representing the Negro Leagues. Free Admission as the game begins at 1:05 PM Free parking in Lot B Gates Open at 12:00PM Live Music at gate 5 starting at 11:30 AM It really is an outstanding event to attend from everything I've heard as I missed last year, but I'll be there this year.
  13. Have there been many cases of that actually occuring, where hitters lower their K rate while facing better pitchers? I know it's rare for hitters to dramatically improve BB ratios, but I don't know of many hitters that struggled to make contact and were able to improve on it when it hurt their production in the lower levels.

  15. Most of the LSU picks have likely come to terms including Mitchell, just waiting for physicals early next week. As far as Springfield, he could still go the JUCO route and I'm sure with his drafting, he could've gone to any JUCO of his choice.
  16. Jordan leaving was the best thing to happen to the U of I, Weber should be thankful he likely talked Jordan out of that scholarship. It's an unethical way of doing things, but every program does when there are worse players taking scholarships away from better players who now can be recruited with that spot opening up.
  17. No Mr. Submarine?
  18. There's no doubt that he can hit and has a decent arm, I don't know how much power he's going to end up with.
  19. If the kid is good enough, it's actually easier to get MLB to pay 100% for school thru their scholarship plan than it is the actual school given the restrictions. If I was a parent and my son had been drafted pretty high, my advice would be anything above 150K (after taxes, which is likely 250K w/out taxes taken out) and a full-ride afterwards, he should state he wants slot and sign the pro contract.
  20. I'm thinking it's the other way around. MLB would void the deal if he signed before the bonus was agreed upon, Springfield then has the option of accepting the scholarship plan usually similar to the amount of scholarship before signing or a smaller cash bonus, in case he has no intention of ever going back to school, they give an additional bonus (not usually more than 2-5K).
  21. But he didn't get close to 100% & ISU has too many holes, new staff, & he's not worth 100% for them to allocate that much on one player. No team (minus a JUCO player) would assume that he would get more by going to a diff. school than the one he committed to. He can't say, "well, I know I committed to ISU but if I don't make it, I want to go to NU, so I need 160K for 4 years of scholly money." It's based off of where he committed and what % as teams typically try to match amount for the 4 years and hold into an account, it's run by MLB. If he 60% of 20K, he would get 12K per year * 4, which would give him 48K of scholarship money. 75% would be at 60K. 80K seems way too high for a scholarship for someone in Blair's shoes.
  22. You are wrong. Come over to my blog from time to time, and we'll straighten you out. Are there any major differences in stat. anaylsis with the improvements/easier access to pbp data? I've always felt that is the next frontier of sabermetrics is the progression of pbp data. Btw, I've always respected the work you've done and learned plenty from your online/published work for about the last 10 years or there about. Even though OFP is my stat, I respect the knowledge each side of that table can learn from one another.
  23. "The initial deal is worth $80,000, and it essentially replaces the scholarship to Illinois State that Springfield passed on to sign with the Cubs. It can be used for a college education should something like an injury cut short his baseball career. Springfield also said he's still negotiating his signing bonus." Seems to me like the 80 K was more for his eventual education and not the whole signing bonus. ISU isn't a 20K a year school for an in-state student even at 100% scholarship, he probably got around 50%-60% from ISU. I wouldn't expect the bonus to be much. I am confused on the wording in this article and believe they got it backwards that he signed for 80K and will negotiate how much money the Cubs will provide for school, which should be about 40K at the most.
  24. Cales got demoted to Daytona at the end of May. He hasn't pitched in a week now, although with the All-Star break that's only been 5 games. Curious that he hasn't been used though, he'd gone right back to dominating at Daytona since his demotion. With him, there always has to be some concern.
  25. He was signable from the start, he projects as a utility guy as the main thing that hurts him is his lack of speed.
