  1. Would he have learned it if he had been handled better? I obviously don't have the answer, but it is a fair question to ask and ponder about.
  2. It could be a little bit of both, personally I think both parties did a horrible job in this case. I thought the Cubs have handled Corey about as poorly as possible starting with not letting CP go to Daytona even for a brief period of time, then trying to make a leadoff hitter at Iowa, while rushing him in the process. Corey deserves blame for not being able to progress as a player, despite the negatives of how he has been handled, a player can still overcome the way he has been handled and progress from them (the situation where that would not be possible was if a pitcher was abused in the minors).
  3. Lynch was the one mostly responsible for the hiring of Baylor, Hendry was director of scouting at the time, I believe.
  4. In what regards? 10 year plan, build thru minor league pitching have scouts, instructors, and everyone in-between all on the same page. Draft high ceiling players and put faith into their ability to develop a player from within. Unlike many teams that draft college players, be willing to put faith in their ability to develop a HS player with a high ceiling and risk a potential bust. Baseball starts and ends with scouts and instructors as far as the ability to find the right players and maximize those abilities, in regards to building a system from the btm up. Everything starts at the btm, which is why I'd like to see the Cubs allocate more resources towards scouting and hiring top notch instructors along the way. I watched the Cubs have a long-term plan and watched it turn into a short-term goal. They were on the right track (even during the '02 season), now I'm not sure which direction they are heading. Are they looking long-term or "waiting till next year"? Hendry has been wise as far as getting important players in their prime, which has been valuable but expensive as far as salaries. My impression is that the Cubs have sacrificed scouting and signing expenses of draft picks and international FAs for current payroll, which I don't agree with.
  5. Cox has had the luxury of being a former GM in a system very similar in Toronto that Schuerholz was under out in KC. They have very similar beliefs on how to build a club, ironically it runs parallel to how I believe an organization should be structured.
  6. BA hasn't updated their minor league transactions in quite some time, so here are the roster moves of the last 30 days. Boyer, Kyle D Corbeil, Alfred A Cunnane, William J Mallory, Michael D McGlinchy, Kevin M O'Brien, Weston C Phelps, Travis These players have been released within the last 30 days.
  7. I'll be there as well in a couple of weeks, Rockford runs a solid ship, they have a quality team and quality management.
  8. The Braves (top to btm) have been the most effectively run system in MLB for about the last 15 years, compare any squad to them and they will look futile in comparison.
  9. A man bringing a glove to a game is just a notch above bringing a sign to a game. The ability to make a witty statement using WGN or CSN should not be televised.
  10. I meandered out to Peoria for Sunday's game. Patterson showed a good eye at the bat, hit the ball to all fields, line drives, good range at 2B. Fuld impressed me the most, hit the hardest balls of the night, one by Larsen as well. Harvey had a poor 1st AB, but he adjusted to the breaking pitch and was able to lay off of it after the 1st AB. He still has the frame to add pounds w/out becoming stiff. Sisk was good as wll, I don't know how he played SS in the Central League, he appears to be a tweener. Weber showed a 88-90FB, avg. curve, I won't judge a player based on one outing, but he'll have to be way more deceptive as he progresses.
  11. One more thing, Steve Trout and I were in the same elevator today. I said nothing, b/c I couldn't place the face w/the name. :x
  12. Once I get back from Cardinal country (Columbia, MO) I'll debate whether to get rid of it or use it to wash my car, it is a soft cotton blend. :D
  13. The 1st time I ever get to see him in person and he pitches one of the best games of his career. I don't believe in curses, but magnetic connections, they exist. Anyone want the promotion (shirt celebrating the '82 championship) from tonight's game? Tim, you can auction it off.
  14. Correctly so, in this case. He's a fine manager, but I fail to see the importance of mentioning this in a public forum, I doubt a reporter could set him up for that type of answer.
  15. So what? It is a workout for the All-Star game and HR derby! Who cares, they're not going thru some meaningful workout it'll be a generic walk-thru and media non-sense. MLB is being overpaid by ESPN to hold Sunday night Baseball, the Cards should feel obligated to honor that commitment for ESPN deciding that would be the matchup most people would likely want to see among the choices.
  16. Let's see... Flight in late to Detroit, late Sunday/early Monday. Off Monday morning and afternoon and arrive at the ballpark in the evening for the HR derby. Is there something I'm missing here? Give the man a pacifier.
  17. I still believe it would have been wise to give someone like Cruz the 5th spot and/or allocated that money on someone like Clement to a long-term deal as a better option than someone who will be getting paid for what he has done, rather than what he will do. I still contend that if Maddux wasn't previously with the Cubs and had the talks with Himes end like they did, he would not have been an option for the '04 season. This was a publicity move 1st and a baseball move 2nd. I think the 24 mil allocated towards Maddux should've rec'd more value than it will likely rec. from a year and a half from now when the contract expires. Wins and losses are as only as good as the team around him, Maddux would be closer to 225-250 wins than 312 wins if he stayed with Chicago his entire career. Why would there be a 50-75 win difference? B/c the Braves have been a much better team during the duration of Greg's departure and not all of that falls onto the hands of him.
  18. Yes his numbers have slipped over the last 3 years but his 2nd halves have been pretty good even in those years. IMO, Wood is being overpaid more at this point of his career than Maddux. He (Wood) has yet to post an ERA below 3.20 ever in a season while Greg had 5 seasons of sub 3.20 ERA before the age of 29. Wood's 2nd halve ERAs over the last 3 years (02-04) 3.21, 3.21, & 4.27. While Greg's 2nd have ERAs over the same time 2.42, 3.03, & 3.48. You are advocating paying a player for what he did before, not for what he will hopefully do in the future. The Cubs didn't sign Maddux to be good in just July and August. I don't see why Wood is even part of this debate. Nobody is claiming Wood is outplaying his contract. It's a pretty weak statement of support for Maddux when people have to say he's not as overpaid as somebody else. Who cares? He's overpaid, it doesn't justify it if somebody else is more overpaid. It incorrectly tries to justify the Maddux signing as anything but a poor signing?
  19. Greg isn't the same pitcher as he was before the age of 29, why compare them? Wood is being overpaid more at this stage, b/c of an inability to stay healthy. I fail to see why you would choose to compare 2nd half numbers of Wood and Maddux. That's selective stats when there is a better picture, like the entire season. His 1st halves have been poor, his 2nd halves have been good, that has led him to be an avg, starting pitcher for a competitive club. (#3 on most teams expecting a playoff spot).
  20. I'll assume that Goony was speaking of declining in terms of an annual basis, rather than taking an individual season and breaking them down at the AS break. Maddux might pitch better in the second half, that doesn't eliminate the below avg. 1st halves and the overall decline a pitcher will have as he enters his late 30s as Maddux is currently going thru.
  21. Maddux hasn't been worth the salary he is being paid, Wood hasn't been the worth the deal signed after '03. They're both at diff. stages of their career with different reasons behind why they haven't earned the dollar amount of their contracts. The logic behind signing Wood was better than Maddux, the execution of correcting/miscalculating his mechanics was not. They paid Maddux for what he has done in his career, the Cubs were going to pay Wood for what he was going to do during the prime of his career.
  22. Damn, you're always on the go!
  23. Depends on the hitter, I would expect Walker to benefit with a higher BABIP from hitting 2nd. Now, could you tell? Depends, but I doubt it would flucuate beyond normal regressions.
