  1. Wanting out in year is regardless of accomplising the goal, Iraq will not be an independent state in one year capable of operating w/out US assistance of US soliders. There's probably a large percentage of soliders in Iraq pondering the same thought as far as an attainable object. I put the poll there to show there are questions concerning the war and the validity behind having all the troops there.
  2. Exactly, Guzman will likely go to AA at this stage. He hasn't had a full season yet healthy and will have to do so to have a shot at the majors. Spring Training just proves how talented he really is (which they already know) and the regular season will prove how healthy he can be. I think the Cubs are pleased by his Spring performance that the numerous arm injuries have not had much permanent damage rather than fighting for a 25 man spot.
  3. I did the math earlier and it comes down to an extra start for Zambrano, Prior, Maddux, and Rusch. Baker and Rothschild have been very good at working the pitchers hard throughout the season and that includes early on, pitching is a tearing down process, the potential of two early wins of Prior (which isn't a given) and Zambrano over Williams isn't worth the potential of them wearing down in August. I see any difference between Williams and Maddux/Rusch as minimal at best. Those two added starts of a better pitcher won't decide the season compared to how the pitching staff will be treated throughout the year.
  4. How do you deal with Zambrano's first trip through the rotation? Do you rest him from April 3 - 11? I think that is excessive, and quite possibly could lead to a poor outing or two early on as he adjusts to normal/extra rest. If you know how to properly use his time between his starts, it could be more a benefit than a negative. Having him sit around for 10 days, won't accomplish anything, adjusting his program between the extended rest would be a benefit, beyond limiting his workload at the start of the season in cold weather. If he throws 75-90 pitches off the mound on one of those off days, working on location, spotting his pitches, and not exerting him self by going 14-15 pitches per set (inning). Have him face live hitting, he'll get work, limit fatigue, and still get to work on specialzed areas of improvement.
  5. Ummm....so? Newsflash: 1918:An overwhelming majority of American troops want out of France and Belgium. Representing the minority, one doughboy who voted to stay was quoted as saying "Ya, i like eating rats and living in trenches full of mud. Pooping without getting shot by a sniper isn't so bad, it's actually quite fun. I don't mind it here" 1943: An overwhelming majority of American troops want out of North Africa 1944: An overwhelming majority of American troops want out of France 1945: An overwhelming majority of American troops want out of the Pacific Islands. 1951: An overwhelming majority of American troops want out of Korea In both World Wars would troops wanting out be at the expense of accomplishing the goals or would they be wanting out after the goal was accomplished? Like Vietnam, I think the Iraq War runs parallel to wanting out before the task has been completed rather than getting it done and out ASAP.

  7. I'll be disappointed if they go with a 4 man rotation, they have an opportunity to lessen the workload in colder weather and the difference between the 4th and 5th starter in that secnario is none as far as likely production. If there's an extended stretch where a starter gets too much, you bump him up, but there should be no reason why a starter scheduled for 5 days of rest has to get it bumped up to 4 days of rest. I fail to see how the long-term benefits of an extra start skipped and the wear/tear is reduced compared to getting Zambrano and Prior an extra start and how that'll impact the standings.
  8. Don't show favortism towards players and you'll potentially eliminate this type of crap earlier rather than later. You give them free lobster for 16 years and then offer them a coupon for Long John's Silver, they'll be upset. Thomas was spoiled during his career with the Sox, the Sox were the ones who spolied him. You're at fault for feeding his bloated ego by putting him above everyone else. Thomas has been a spoiled brat, Williams is acting like what Thomas has been. Hypocritical to sound like a complete idiot to the media, complaining about someone sounding like a complete idiot to the media.
  9. If they get 60+ starts from Kerry and Prior and they'll have a shot, then you'll have regression, players coming back from a down year, unknowns like Cedeno/Murton as well as Baker's impact in how he manages the lineup and bullpen. Ramirez will also have to stay healthy, if this team has a below avg. #5 hitter, take the away the #3 or #4 hitter and see what happens.
  10. Door County is in Wisconsin. Wisconsin is the state I drive through to get to Michigan. I have no purpose in Wisconsin, except the outlet mall right on the border.
  11. I agree some ppl around here can not drive and it pisses me off because I work for the AHL hockey team in Milwaukee so I am constantly on 94. But, god forbid you are forced to drive only 5 over the speed limit. Admirals games are a good time. And I know it as FIB's. Freaking Illinois Bast.... You know the word. Freaking? I've only heard the more vulgar replacement for Freaking.
  12. They need to play audio of Harry singing, if they had a more modern stadium (which I'm glad they don't), they could provide video of Harry signing it as well. Celebrities using it as forum as self-promotion leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
  13. The best RH'ed bat off the bench with be Hairston or possibly Grissom, depending on what happens at 2B. I'm not thrilled w/Mabry being the best LH'ed option off the bench either.
  14. That's much slower than Illinois, Illinois is unique that way, where you can do 85 down 94 and not get pulled over, b/c you're keeping up with the flow of traffic.
  15. That's right, I have considered the alt. of Madison to be like Denver. I've been called a flatlander more than a FIB. The only time they anger me is when I'm driving on 94, in general they are the worst drivers I've collectively seen. Plus, those cops love to hang out right over the border nailing Illinois drivers used to doing 85 in a 55, now forced to go to 70 in a 65. Most have no concept of the left lane being the fast lane.
  16. I'll live right on the border, I'm very well aware of it, I prefer "flatlander" though. Neither bothers me though.
  17. Now that he's officially gone to super-utility, does anyone see him becoming a better version of Jose Macias? Unlike Macias, he has a strong arm and an eye at the plate not geared towards hitting a pitcher's pitch?
  18. That's hard to find, numbers guys don't have the pedigree of someone who has coached like Hendry or obviously someone who played the game and if they've started out as scouts, information like that is hard to find as to how they started if they've never played. The Cubs has a numbers guy who reports directly to Hendry (I assume he reports directly to him), I don't know if elevating his say in matters accomplishes anything. You don't need to hire someone like Depodesta (for example) to become an assistant to create more balance, though.
  19. There's no doubt speed creates distraction over a guy on 1B who doesn't have speed, it's just which pitchers does it distract and how much does speed compare to actually getting on 1B.
  20. Nice editing trick as I never called you weak-minded, I find your tone on here to be repulsive, but that's for others to decide. I'll ignore you as you should ignore me, as the board probably doesn't want to read this stupidity (as I edited and erased originally, b/c it was inappropiate).
  21. That's what I was afraid with those projections, that the '05 leadoff hitter and Walker might actually outperform the 06' projections of Pierre and Perez hitting 1-2.
  22. I was the one who used the phrase "weak minded" pitchers. I explained why I used it and how a pitcher can avoid getting distracted. Your ability to be sarcastic was clouded by actually asking what I thought was a legit question rather than being cute. Save your attempts for trying to appear witty for someone else, some of us try to have intelligent posts and some like you try to ruin it for the rest of us.
  23. Replacing Walker with Perez in the first lineup I listed Dropped the R/G from 4.508 to 4.315, a difference of about 31 runs over a full season. Was there a different lineup you wanted to see with Perez in it? Is there any way to find a player that projects similar to what the Cubs leadoff hitters hit last year? Then plug that player in there w/Walker hitting 2nd?
  24. Like I said before, OBP is the requirement of a productive leadoff, speed is the accessory. If ideals enter the equation, ideally, I'd rather have someone at the top with a higher OBP than Pierre.
  25. One possibly two more, BK? Replace Walker with Perez hitting 2nd. I'm just trying to gauge whether or not, the improvement of having Pierre leadoff in '06 over what they had at the top in '05 is almost negated by having Perez hit 2nd compared to Walker? Not that Walker had many ABs hitting 2nd in '05 (IIRC, it was around 250), but the offense at the top would not show much improvement over '05, if Perez is hitting 2nd. (I'm not saying the Cubs will start Perez, I'm just trying to get a statistical guess as to what the damage might be)
