  1. Is that one called "The Ripken way?" I heard about it, I haven't read it.
  2. Not a bad idea, but I have mostly coaching and scouting books.
  3. Hey mods, chuck this one in the delete file. Vance won the race.
  4. Those of you who have read my posts, know that I think Schuerholz is the best GM in the game and has been the best GM over the last 30 years or so. This sounds like a very interesting book, it goes much further in-depth than I expected it to. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/0310braves.html On Lofton and Sanders: They also mention Glavine signing withe the Mets as well as John Rocker.
  5. For the most part, it's not their 1st choice. In urban sectors, space is at minimum, people are at a maximum, and equipment is much more difficult to obtain. Even in rural areas, I have to drive a couple of miles to get to a baseball field. Find one with a fence and it's another 25 miles. Baseball is not an easily accessible sport, factor in financial costs to play properly as well as the right amount of people and it's easy to understand why it is a concern. But whites don't play as often as they used to either, it really isn't a race issue to me, but a baseball issue.
  6. What were you even doing on MC Hammer's blog, UK? Private and censored for your protection. Honestly, one of my favorite baseball sites posted the link.

  8. Here's a reason to optimistic... http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/51-03092006-623911.html An improved approach is nothing to be ashamed of.
  9. You don't need proof to not vote him in based on suspecting him of using steroids. Writers have every right to not vote him in based on potential steroid usage.
  10. Sorry, but you immediately contradict yourself here. Moving a runner over is playing for one run. Playing for one run is small ball. I have no issues with calling it fundamentals either, because nearly all aspects of small ball would be considered fundamentals by those who advocate it. No contradiction there, moving a runner over is a worst case scenario in a productive AB, you still want to try and drive him in on a base hit. You have 3 productive possibilities... 1)HR 2)S, DB, TR drives him in 3)Sacrifice Sacrifice whether by bunt or just trying to hit it to the 2B, is the least productive of the 3. Unless he is behind in the count w/two strikes should he settle for #3. If I have confidence in my #2 hitter, I want him to the same stroke that would lead to a line drive rather than a G-4. A hitter's primary goal in small ball is to move the runner over, w/out small-ball the primary goal is to drive him in. If he unable to drive him in, the worst he should do is to move him to 3rd. You also able to be fundamentally sound to be productive in a Earl Weaver type of offense, still have to work the count, get on base, be mechanically sound at the plate, get a good pitch to hit, and drive the ball.
  11. Pierre doesn't BB much b/c he does expand his strike zone with two strikes and has always been good at making contact during any count.
  12. This shouldn't surprise anyone, regardless of Rothschild saying that he might not be a ST type of pitcher, he still needs to get his work in. For whatever reason, it doesn't appear he has had the work needed and is behind. I'm not surprised he's behind schedule, I just don't know why he's behind.
  13. Not if it is at the expense of drawing BBs.
  14. I understand smallball completely. If trying to move the runner over is a worst case scenario, then it's not small-ball. Every team tries that, even Oakland, their #2 hitter isn't trying to hit a HR, he's trying to either drive him or if he fails to accomplish that, try and move him along. That's fundamentals not small-ball. And like I said, you can steal bases and not have it be small-ball. (Edit: if the Oak. hitter hits a HR it would be from trying to make solid contact as most teams like to have from each hitter.)
  15. I don't have Insider, but they typically get those types of reports from regular Newpapers. I think they got that one from the Sun-Times. http://www.suntimes.com/output/cubs/cst-spt-kiley08.html
  16. At this stage, keep an eye on Jones & Maiques.
  17. You have to get on-base to be able to play small ball. Stealing bases isn't small-ball, stealing bases is aggressive & small ball isn't aggressive. Bunting him over would be small ball, the Cubs don't have to automatically go for one run when Pierre is on 1B. You can steal 2B and still have Walker try and knock him in with a base hit thru the 4-3 gap, if it doesn't get thru, it becomes a SH. I'd want Pierre to run as much as possible, I don't want Walker bunting him over. With Pierre it's not an either or scenario as the 2nd hitter dictates whether they're playing for one run or the big inning. This is more important in the 1st when most big innings occur.
  18. Yeah, it's an advanced version of Rookie-ball, you see more Collegiate rookies and more polished HS players there. STL is more aggressive with promoting HS players to Short Season than most.
  19. Look at Boise's roster... It all depends on who they draft and if anyone is coming up from the Latin programs. Most likely those from last year's draft will be at Quad Cities for them. Maybe some of their HS picks who need more instruction, will stay down at instrux, and head there in June. You'll likely see players like Daryl Jones and Kenny Maiques there and then a bunch from the '06 draft who'll have above avg. ceilings.
  20. I know there's one in the Midwest, I'd like to say he pitches in Indiana. I read an article on him recently.
  21. Stolen Bases are more effective as a ratio than an accumulative number. If the manager is the one calling the steal sign, a player's effectiveness is determined by the tendency of the manager. Pierre had plenty of SBs last year despite a terrible OBP, he had less chances to steal 2B compared to previous years, but attempted to steal more frequently. Which player helped their team more, a player who had 56SB to 19CS or the player who had 13SB and only 1CS? For the amount of times advancing to 2B helped the offense, getting thrown out severely reduced the odds of scoring during the inning. Pierre's success next year will be determined by his ability to get on base and not his SBs. Pierre can have 110 SBs next year, if he still has an OBP around .320, he won't be helping the team, b/c he'll always be effective about 75% on the bases.
  22. Congrats to UCLA as CBI's team of the week. http://collegebaseballinsider.com/tow30806.htm
  23. What do you need to know that already hasn't gone public? You have the proof in GJ testimony, you have the substances, the user frequency, and you have the results. It would be like trying to watch a murder mystery after you already know who was killed, who did the killing, and the outcome of it. If I knew less about it already, I would consider buying it, but not now. There are too many good books coming out anyways.
  24. If you head to Beloit, you really can't miss the various booths. If they keep the same set-up as last year, the Chiefs' booth was the furthest to the right (3B side) if you're looking up at it away from the field behind home plate.
  25. Agreed, but it still doesn't take away the fact that Ponson is just trying to latch onto a team and has fallen far in just two years b/c of Ponson. He has no one to blame but himself for his freefall. If Ponson showed a better work ethic as more self-control, he wouldn't be in this position.
