  1. I've seen aluminum bats split in half as well, that was interesting.
  2. There's no doubt that it's financially a greater burden to have wood over aluminum. Like you mentioned, the way these bats are going as well as the ball becoming harder, more and more it's becoming a safety issue.
  3. Sure it does, I'm sure this has already been mentioned but... You're basically doubling the sweet spot from 4 to 8 inches with an aluminum bat. The bat is several ounces lighter and combined with a material less willing to absorb an impact will generate more bat speed and greater velocity will be exerted at contact. You can still effectively grade bat speed with an aluminum bat by how well he stays back and get out in front of an inside pitch without rolling over as well as their ability to let the outside pitches come to them. I think amatuer baseball would be better off going with wood instead of these the state of the art 500.00 launching pads.
  4. Different strengths compared to Pujols/Cabrera, plus I underestimated Cabrera severely. They never had the speed, range, and arm strength as Maybin.
  5. I missed out on V. Guerrero as he was coming up, but I have to imagine that Maybin is the closest we've seen since.
  6. He's going to struggle there, but his gifted ability will amaze those who have not seen him.
  7. I think it's fair to question their methods and not their intent, I believe they want to win 100+ every year within their large budget. The only time it sounds like they're content with '03 and '04 was after '05 and '06. You can't get an accurate gauge of one's intentions through the media. I don't know Hendry and most of his staff, but I think it's fair to say he's trying to win as many as possible and a WS.
  8. Good, that region could use some designated time towards relaxation and sport.
  9. Looking only at his 2005 and 2006 seasons as a reliever, it certainly seems like we saw two different Dempsters. If you look at his peripherals and batted ball data, though, while he was a little better in 2005, he wasn't that much better than he was in 2006. Verdict: same pitcher, very different results. Dempster in '05 was a much better reliever than starter. He had a handful of starts, then switched to the pen and was much better from there on out.
  10. '04 was his rehab year, '05 was his strong year... Hard to say with Dempster, spent most of his time as an inconsistent starter with great stuff and disappointing results (one good year ERA in the 3.6s I believe). So far out of the pen, you have one good year and one bad one. You're going to see a different Dempster more times than not out there, his career has been like this as a starter and as a reliever.
  11. While it's ideal to let every pitcher's pitch go by and not be afraid to choke up and inside out the ball with two strikes, every situation dictates different responses. If I'm facing Marquis and he can't get his breaking pitch over, I would gear up dead red and look to nail him early in the count. There's no reason to allow him to get ahead in the count and give him two pitches per AB to find to breaking pitch. Same thing with pitchers that tip, you find that weakness and you exploit it. Going up against Maddux is different than Zambrano as far as approach. For me, the point of working the count does many things (most of them are obvious) 1)Most pitchers in a 5+ pitch AB will make 2 mistakes. 2)Hitters get better pitches to hit when they are ahead in the count. 3)Increase the chances of baserunners via BB. 4)Wear the pitcher down. There is also a difference between patient and passive, some hitters will let FBs go right down the middle either early in the count or when they're ahead in the count and it costs them. Bonds is probably the most aggressive hitter I've seen while being the most patient, when the pitch is in his zone, he'll try and just make contact, he swings hard on every swing.
  12. http://www.nola.com/sports/t-p/index.ssf?/base/sports-28/1167720007104140.xml&coll=1&thispage=1 3 page article on Jeff.
  13. I have it on VCR, Dawson was called out on strikes. Began arguing w/West and West gave him the quick hook. Next, West was standing there with a smirk on his face and Dawson had to be restrained and while in the dugout Dawson was still upset and threw a handful of bats, West went over there to escalate the situation by counting the bats for a later fine and that's went dawson threw about 15 more onto the field. Dawson was called out on a ball.
  14. I think that would be more valid if they didn't allocate 3 years and 21 mil towards a 4-5 starter instead of going with someone like Marshall.
  15. I like the concept of going after as many arms as possible, just not at the expense of other parts of the roster. If all their bullpen acq. were via FA, they'd be in better shape than it currently is.
  16. Moore only has about a week's worth ABs above AA, given that and his future ceiling, I don't think it would be wise to potentially drop his trade value or stunt his development for a back-up role to a player who'll be here for the next 4 years.
  17. There goes the credibility. ? In case you didn't know the Dodgers sorta have a good farm system. Incase you sorta don't know the Dodgers gave Pierre $50 million dollars. I can understand the Cubs system rating low. But I don't understand why the "Major League" got an F? I mean we were the most aggressive team in the offseason. Got the top 2 men on offense, improved the bullpen and bench a bit, and stabilized the SP. I don't see how that deserves an F. They lost all credibility right from the start. I can understand maybe a C or something. But F? What do they think we'll finish last again? What a laugh. That was based on how they performed, not how well they will perform. It was a review, not a preview.
  18. That's just not a good enough bench, IMO.
  19. Ideally, Moore would be better off going to Iowa possibly build up some trade value rather than sitting on the bench.
  20. Starting Derosa at 3B, still leads them to having Theriot/Cedeno replacing Ramirez. To me, they still a need a 4th OF'er and a RH'ed 3B off the bench.
  21. DeRosa too, but right now unless they put Murton in a platoon situation, the bench isn't much better than years past. If you have an IF of Derosa, Izturis, Cedeno/Theriot, and Lee for any extended time, you're counting on no injuries from Ramirez. At least with someone like Bell, there's a chance to tread water.
  22. You might be right, but they still need a David Bell type (depending on cost). Who has experience playing 3B beyond Ramirez of the likely 25 man roster?
  23. The Cubs need some right handed pop off the bench as well.
  24. 1.73 pop time from a Junior? Damn.
