  1. Ever listen to Larry Dierker or Hershiser call a game, they're very similar to Joe Morgan, not as bad, but cut from the same mold as is every potential manager/announcer. It doesn't tell me anything abdout how he'll be at Peoria, personally I don't care how well he game manages down in Peoria. Player development is all I'm concerned with.
  2. I'd love to delude myself into thinking the Cubs have the best pitching in the NL Central, but as of Christmas eve, in my book, that honor clearly belongs to the Milwaukee Brewers. Take a hard look at Capuano's #'s last year..combine those with a full year of Sheets, throw in Suppan, Bush and Vargas and the Cubs have a VERY formidable foe in their division that's geographically North of them. This is also a staff that has 2 pitchers in the pen who have made AS teams as closers (Turnbow and Cordero) along with some good looking youngsters and holdovers....our pen may have a slight edge, but it's real close. Welcome to the board. Returning from injuries will determine that as far as Sheets and Prior. I think Sheets is a better bet at this stage, but I expect Bush and Suppan to be similar but not as productive as Hill and Lilly. If it's Sheets and Capuano, the Cubs don't have a #2 like Capuano, but Z will outproduce Sheets. I think all 3 are very close.
  3. I think it's impossible to gauge a potential manager by what he does in media circles. If he has a low common denominator for who he thinks will be reading the article, why wouldn't he dumb it up? Heck, most of the people who come up to him probably ask dumb questions and ask for something to be signed.
  4. Hard to imagine a team with that talent likely to finish 4th.
  5. I don't see any irresponsibility here. Plenty of teasers are reported during the hot stove season. Besides, Carroll has sufficiently put himself on the line. If no trade occurs, or no report is later made that such a trade was close, Carroll has opened himself up to criticism (if not dismissal) for his flimsy reporting if he cannot defend his tease. This isn't much different than what is posted on websites like MLBtraderumors etc. Or someone saying, I have a funny joke to tell... If you have no intentions on mentioning who it might be, why bother unless you're making it up?
  6. Where's the responsibility of Carroll? Is he trying to get hits on his page? I'm sorry, but this does nothing but make him look like he's making up a trade just for the hype of it.
  7. He does 3 things well that will help make up for the 4.5 BB/9. He keeps his knuckler down better than most allowing few HRs, like the good knucklers (not like Sparks, Feranadez) he has been difficult to hit, and for some reason he has been difficult to steal off of. Also, many knucklers like Wakefield improve their control as they get older. The reason of there being so few knuckleballers isn't b/c of the effectiveness of the pitch or the difficulty of the pitch. Not many know how to teach it and not many have the desire to learn it & throw it.
  8. I would be disappointed if I spent 60 on that and did not rec. anything useful. Pretty much how I feel about BA's prospect plus at the moment.
  9. Top 2000?!? Just how do they differentiate between numbers 1100 and 1101, I wonder? FWIW, I took a look at that top 2000 and it is pretty impressive and from whom I've seen on that list, it's pretty accurate moreso than BA.
  10. Knuckleballs have the same grading scale and flucuate as comparing a FB or breaking pitch. Wakefield and Candy immed. come to mind as far as knucklers who could start in their prime and be effective and have better knucklers than Fernandez and better secondary pitches. Haeger throws his about 75% of the time, that pitch when thrown at its best is on the btm edge of the zone for a strike or just below the knees, it'll never be a good strike out or control pitch. But, the ability to throw a mid 80s FB and occasional curve makes them that much more effective. The concept that a knuckleballer can't be an effective pitcher is wrong. Like Webb with the sinker, it has to be good enough to not be able to hit when you know it's coming and throw diff. pitches once in awhile to throw a hitter off (his knuckleball isn't close to Webb's sinker as far as effectiveness).
  11. Manning is out of postion 80%+ of the time. If you think that is true, why was he named the starter so early on (after week 2) and not lost his job to Harris yet? I don't know. It certainly was not based on performance. I know the coaching staff is very high on Manning, Lovie Smith was very high on him before the draft. Maybe they wanted him starting so his develeopment is accelerated. I don't dissagree with the decision at the time. But after his benching Harris really rebounded nicely and improved his game. He is a better saftey than Manning at this point IMO. Different strengths, Manning is a better coverage safety and Harris is better against the run. I would rather have Manning at FS over Harris, if it was for SS, I would rather have Harris.
  12. Depends on what another teams values, maybe the arbitration clock has something to do with it. At this stage, Danks has probably has more value over McCarthy especially to a cost-effective team.
  13. Manning is out of postion 80%+ of the time. If you think that is true, why was he named the starter so early on (after week 2) and not lost his job to Harris yet?
  14. There's the problem, the Bears would be better off with Harris and Manning out there. Harris' skills are better suited for SS rather than FS.
  15. I also don't think the Sox are done, this looks like a nice deal to set-up another one.
  16. Am I missing something here with Johnson, to me, he's slow, doesn't cover well and misses too many tackles.
  17. And bring in who? He's better than Johnson as a safety and Hester in the Nickle.
  18. I agree that they could potentially have a nice young stable of arms just like the Cubs had with Wood, Prior, and Zambrano and we saw what happened to that. This might be a great pitching staff in 2-3 years, but Dye and Crede will be gone, Thome will retire, Konerko and A.J. might regress and then what. Also like The A's of the late 90s and the Braves of the late 80s. They haven't given up much in the short-term for the long-term. They only thing I would disappointed in would be is an inability to upgrade at LF and SS.
  19. Just barely edging out Jared Fernandez? I love the knuckleball but it's gimmicky, and I wouldn't put a lot of faith in a guy's minor league #s using it. I understand the concept of translating minor league stats, but knuckleballers have proven to be the exception for DIPs, and I think this is another thing where you can't just look at his MLEs and get a good estimate of what he'll become. No, it's better than Fernandez it has better movement and he can control it better. Unlike most knuckleballers he has some velocity on his FB and his curve is avg.
  20. Hopefully the Bears will prove me wrong about them looking like they won't care about these final two games and expecting to turn it up for the 1st playoff game.
  21. I like this trade for the Sox, while I wouldn't put Haeger ahead of McCarthy on any depth chart, I think Haeger could become a good btm of the rotation starter. Haeger is the best knuckleballer since Wakefield. Danks has a higher ceiling than McCarthy and getting a solid relief prospect in return adds to the value of this trade. They could potentially have a nice young stable of arms with Broadway, Danks, Floyd, Gonzalez, etc.
  22. Which I still give the edge to STL. Of course, salaries carry over as well.
  23. Sosa will need a major overhauling. His bat speed isn't quick enough for his stance and that hit to the head brought the element of fear to his game. He never stood as close to the plate as he did before the Torres FB.
  24. 2 more names, while I'm reflecting back 10 years ago. Mo Vaughn, Galarraga.
  25. He played in the same era as Thome, McGwire, Palmiero, Thomas, Bagwell, McGriff, etc. at 1B. He'll never be considered a HOF candidate. Also, Olerud and Will Clark have better chances than Grace.
