  1. You're comparing a player who played mainly in the 70s/80s with a player today as far as offensive statistics. I'd like to see better defense out of CF than Jones, especially with Floyd/Derosa and Soriano on each side. Given that it's halfway thru the season, that's more than enough time to gauge whether or not a position is worth upgrading especially where there are already 2-3 weak spots offensively. If they're not willing to commit to Pie, Jones is the best option, but isn't an option where they should not think about improving if given a chance.
  2. While Barrett has a below avg. arm, Maddux can make a C w/a good arm throw late to 2B often.
  3. Nice job by both sides, Williams locked him up below market value for 4 years. Mark gets to stay where he wanted to be and has enough clauses in the contract to where he'll likely stay in Chicago for 4 years. Seeing something like this makes me envious when thinking about Carlos and his upcoming FA. Cubs fan would kill to see news like this about Zambrano (Z will command more obviously).
  4. That's not his job, that's the job of the team president. Noted Amend point three to read: Hires a team president that fires Jim Hendry on day 1. Depending on how much control he wants, he might be team president but given all his other financial ventures, I'm assuming he'll hire someone to be team president.

  6. Agreed, of all the realistic choices he's probably the one I would support the most at this stage.
  7. Ideally, yes Pie would be given a shot and allowed to keep from here on out. Unfort. he's now backing up Pagan and Jones in CF. If Pagan and Jones are your platooning starting CF'ers, you need a CF'er if this team expects to compete for the post-season.
  8. Someone equal to, less than, or greater than Soto? As far as ideal trade thought processes... This is just a hypothetical. Cubs send Jones and prospect(s) (within reason) to get Winn and some cash to off-set his contract. Supposedly, Winn is avail. and plays a better CF than Jones, obviously more productive than Jones this year, can hit between Soriano and Lee, but has a bad contract that could be eased up by hopefully Jones, prospect, and some cash. But Winn hasn't even been all that good this year(.281/.333/.403) and we'd be paying him 8 million next year and 8.25 million in '09(plus he has a 10 team no-trade clause those years). I don't see how that really improves the situation. If you're taking on someone playing as marginally as Winn, you might as well let Pie or Jones try to work out of it. There's a bigger upside to Winn in CF for this year than Jones, Pie, or Pagan. Beyond the salary difference of Jones, there would have to be some salary taken by SF as well. Enough to where his '09 salary becomes doable.

  10. If you're looking for a defensive C that can be had cheap with a team taking on much of his salary who would be an upgrade... Rod Barajas in Philly. Coste is healthy now, Ruiz has outplayed Barajas and has no where to play. He can hit for some pop, good defensively, will struggle to get on base. I would offer them Izturis and whatever cash to balance it out to Philly for Barajas. Philly lacks a MI utility type and they have not room for Barajas and will likely release him. This also makes a path for Cedeno. :)
  11. While I don't trust Floyd as an everyday Rf'er b/c of leg injuries, given Dye this year, the same thing applies.
  12. My apologies to Banedon and Vance but... I'm hoping Raisin and Raw are in the finals with Raw winning it.

  14. I corrected the title, it's too early to call it a steroid, but it was some sort of banned stimulant.
  15. Odd combination but Neifi has been suspended 25 games.
  16. He probably is tipping (prob. release point or glove positioning), it's up to the Cubs to find it over the break.
  17. Thomas Purke, lhp, Klein HS, Spring, Texas (2009). There were seven members of the 2009 class that were invited to the tournament, and Purke was as good as anyone—regardless of class. He has a tall, lean build with a lot of room to fill out and ran his fastball into the 89-92 mph range with ease. He has a clean, easy arm action with little effort in his delivery. Purke throws from a low three-quarters arm slot that produces great arm-side run on his fastball and will also show a nasty slider. His potential appears unlimited and he should be at the very top of the 2009 draft crop.
  18. His FB is a plus pitch as well, just b/c it doesn't light up the gun, dive out of the zone, or cut doesn't mean it's average. It's a hard pitch to pick up out of the hand, it helps having that curve, but there's a boatload of swings and misses by the deception of that pitch. Even though it comes in at about 90, it probably looks 95 especially when guessing curve or trying to pick it out of the pitcher's box.
  19. I wish it was easy to develop a good change, it isn't. That's a pitch more about feel than anything else. I don't know if his arm action is one that can allow him a good change-up. What makes him deceptive might make it difficult to not alter his arm speed or angle on a change.
  20. It's an interesting question, I'm not sure how much of his cold start was dependent on the cold weather or learning a new position. As a LF'er he has been very good offensively... You can do the same thing when the weather got warmer as well and get the same findings. .329/.351/.587/.938
  21. Hendry and them are familiar with Lofton, they know how he is on the field and in the clubhouse. You'll never know for sure but if they don't go after him, it might be a reason why as far as him being an extremely selfish teammate.

  23. Hendry and Lou would've had to shown a glimpse that they covet the strengths of Dunn (raw power, ability to draw walks) overcome his weaknesses (defense, speed, long uppercut swing, inability to make consistent contact) to the point where they'd include someone with the value of Hill to get that. It'll never happen, too many people in that front office like Hill and value those weaknesses of Dunn while calculating the good he could bring.
  24. Give Chico credit, he located well, changed speeds, and kept them off balance with two diff. FBs, curve and change. He's the type of pitcher that will give the Cubs' hitters fits.
