  1. Don't worry, things look pretty bleak now, so I doubt you get ripped on this proposal. I'd even consider it longer if we knew whether Wood will ever be the horse he was signed to be. Z is great, but the starting rotation IMO needs more (RELIABLE) depth.
  2. Just ignore the post. As for me, I generally don't post anything baseball in Rants, because it doesn't get read, much less dis/agreed with. Moving is for the mods to decide.
  3. Win JUST ONE GAME before September 1st. The way you people have been playing, getting the ONE might be a challenge. Losers are loveable only to Mom and Jesus Christ. Take this one to Rants if you must...
  4. I do think the speech overly romanticized things, but I also understand Ryno's frustration with players dogging it. I think that happens in all generations, in all professions. That's why there IS a HOF to begin with - it's a place where those who are talented and who make the most of their talents get a place to be recognized. I understand where you (and Ryno) are coming from re: respect and love of the game. I also grant that a lot of it is marketing (MLB is a HUGE entertainment francise) and money. But there are still some players out there who aren't about the money. Take Aaron Boone for example. He told the truth about violating his contract with the Yankees when he injured himself playing basketball; this year, he took a three-quarter of a million dollar paycut to re-sign with the Indians. Why? Because of loyalty - repaying the loyalty they showed him during his horrific slump. Unfortunately, his attitude doesn't run in the family... at least, his elder brother sure doesn't have it.
  5. I think there's a pretty good chance that Seattle would part with Randy Winn. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/234674_mtrade30ww.html  Told you it's been a while since I checked out the Mariners! And I was busy moving at the trading deadline, so that explains my being asleep at the wheel, so to speak. :-) Now I have no other excuse except the Cubs stink. I'm so disgusted with this team's performance now that this morning I felt like going to the Cards message board and wishing them the best of luck on their pennant and WS run this year. Might as well have a team represent the Central admirably for a change...
  6. Cull some Seattle Mariners sites. The guy can really hustle in CF and on the basepaths. One eager baseball player, who, the last time I tuned into a Mariners game (granted that's been a while) was learning to take care of business with the bat also. I don't think Seattle will part with him. There's a better shot with Randy Winn, IMO. (Edited to correct misspelling Winn's last name.)
  7. Yeah, I read that also. And I found it particularly interesting that Dusty was the one to point that out. I'm not sure what that means, but it felt like Dusty was saying that their destinies were tied together. Note to Jim Hendry: PLEASE disentangle yourself from this self-aggrandizing albatross. Dusty Baker will not find you a better job in a different organization, and even if he's found out where the proverbial bodies are buried in this organization or your own life (if something like that exists), sticking with him isn't worth it. Baker will sell you out in a heartbeat, Jim. Do the right thing for the organization and the fans and get him out and get the club the talent it needs.
  8. That's what I was thinking. The guy was always a leader in the clubhouse as well, even if he wasn't the best player. But Girardi couldn't have stunk it up too bad - you don't get 3 WS rings by accident. (I looked it up - it was not 4, as I said earlier.) One, maybe... but let's keep Lenny Harris out of this. :-)
  9. Isn't Girardi being groomed to take over for Joe Torre who is rumored to be close to retirement? Yes, BUT he and wife Kim are both Northwestern grads, home is in Chicagoland, hometown is Peoria. Give him the money, the chance to put his own staff together, and I think Joe would go for running the show NOW rather than waiting for the Godfather to hang it up. The thought of it makes me giddy. Especially fantacizing about Ryno as bench coach to boot.
  10. I'm driving that one, babe! Or at least call shotgun.
  11. But on topic, say Dusty does leave. Who's gonna take his place? Sarge? Does anyone else recognize the possibility that whoever takes Dusty's place might actually be worse? Well, if Dusty is gone, I'd have to imagine the rest of the coaching staff would be shown the door too. So I don't think it would be Sarge. I want Ron Gardenhire. Whatever it takes. Offer him a bunch of money. Joe Girardi, anyone? Enough moola and playing the hometown card might be enough to get him and his FOUR WS RINGS out of New Yawk... at least, that's what I'd hope. Plus he wouldn't be warming the bench as Torre's protege - he could run his OWN show next year. Oh, yeah, and some good supporting personnel (players & coaches) should be in the mix too.
  12. Yes, but you know that if you're wild early, can't set up things like that. Well, I gotta get outta here. Go PHILLIES!!!! Please stop our runaway train descent into the cellar.
  13. You honestly think they care? Maybe Lee, but I have my doubts about the rest of them. The only people who are getting a helping of humility are Cub fans.
  14. Talk about baptism by fire. Not making it any better by delivering 2 balls to Cliff Floyd. To his credit, he got Floyd to pop out to Aramis. True, but he's having problems hitting his spots again. That drives me nuts.
  15. Talk about baptism by fire. Not making it any better by delivering 2 balls to Cliff Floyd.
  16. Can't be more than half a dozen. That last AB was only 2 pitches.
  17. That's nothing new for Cammie. Super nice guy, great in the field, but whiff king extraordinare. When he gets hold of one, though, it goes a long way.
  18. And now Tom Glavine has had a better outing on both defense AND offense than most of our guys, including DLee. Nice catch by Burnitz. I sure would like a solid outfielder or three.
  19. Sammy Syndrome. "No one else will go get it, so it's all up to me."
  20. Man this is just sad. My b/f called me on my cell, and I chewed him out just because of these lazy, overpaid, spoiled rotten, stupid bums.           At least when the Cubs stunk in the 90s, Ryno was poetry in the field, Grace was my idol (at the time), and Sammy wasn't on steroids... and... when the team was 6 runs down, they didn't get your hopes up by coming back part way... only to let the other team gain the runs right back.
  21. "The last thing I want to do is die here in New York." Now there's a Ron Santo quote for the ages.
  22. The entire 1999 year comes to mind...
  23. "Cubs try to hit back to back homers" says Pat. How about back to back outs... as defenders????
  24. Nice for Burny to get some practice shagging fly balls. Oh, I don't know what I'm saying. This is just bad, bad, bad.
  25. Vocab point: ranting is what one would be doing after this craptacular performance. Raving happened before.
