  1. And the bases are loaded for Juan Encarnation. Granny, anyone? EDIT: No, I think walking in a run this time...
  2. This is what happens when you don't have a legit backup 1B man. And don't gimmie Hollandsworth. He's had all of 3 games at first in his career. Walker can. Remember we're only talking about a game or two here and there, maybe 6-7 games a year. Holla and Walker could cover that assignment. I'd feel better about that if Hairston weren't on the DL. I can't remember seeing Hollandsworth playing 1B in a Cub uniform. Why doesn't Dusty ever put him there to spell Lee. Wait a minute, I think I just answered my question: Dusty being Dusty. Another nice play by Nomar. Maybe HE could pitch? :D His BA is bad enough to look as if it belongs to a pitcher...
  3. You're a little late there. So is Gameday. :-)
  4. I agree with your sentiments, but some of your assertions are off, as other posters have pointed out already (e.g., bunting, stealing bases). Read Moneyball for a good case history of the A's, why and how Beane gets the results, and narratives of some of the players involved (Swish is one of those people, BTW).
  5. Hasn't control issues always been the knock on Hill? Maybe he's not quite ready. The curve is really his only established pitch. When it's on, it's devastating. When it's off, well, you can dig out the box score on his last outing, where he couldn't locate his curve OR fastball. Hill has no business being up here. I SO wish Hendry had procured a rental starter before the trade deadline, but the only good option would have been AJ out of Florida, and that would have taken a ton to get. And he's not exactly without health problems, either. Why not just let Mitre start? I'm not too comfortable with Hill or Williams, neither seem to have much control. Sounds like a good question to ask Carrie Muskat... if the organization dares to have her do another Cubs Mailbox piece this year. :)
  6. Yeah. Scratch my comment earlier about Dusty putting together a lineup today that made sense.

  9. Why do you say that? You think he's a jinx, sounding more off than usual, or are you worried about his physical and mental health?

  11. PLEASE DON'T SCREW UP THIS LINEUP WITH A BAD PITCHER, DUSTY. How fresh is Rusch?
  12. What pitch was it? A curve or a FB? Fastball right down the middle. Just trying to start the game off with a strike. Well, it was a crappy pitch, but you can't blame the strategy... at least when Freel WAS 0 for 19. Now the kid hits Pena. Please return Mr. Hill to Iowa with a GPS to find his pitch location.
  13. I'm thinking the Cubs might actually win today's game. Now that Dusty has us so far in a hole standings-wise that we'll never claw out, he FINALLY puts in a lineup that makes sense. What a moran.
  14. Again, I'd hate to see Prior go. I can just envision him going somewhere and becoming a legend like Maddux in his prime. Mark's a talented guy; I don't want to have to root against him. :-) But regardless, I think Jim Hendry needs to get a 2 or 3 starter anyway - an innings-eater like Jon Lieber was during his stint in a Cub uniform, or Matt Clement. Maddux can still do it, but anymore he just gives up too many HRs for him to be any more than a No. 3 or 4 starter. I just don't want to see ANOTHER season with our hopes pinned on Prior and Wood, with no backup if (when?) they are out of commission.
  15. I think most of those statements are sensible, with the exception of #5. Our corner IFs have enough pop to compensate for Ramirez, who IMO should never set foot on the green part of a baseball field. Johnny Damon, on the other hand, IS a FA. Yes, he's a Boras client; yes, he will ask for a boatload of money, but if you're going to deal CPatt elsewhere and break the bank anyway... I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree that Cedeno should start at SS next year.
  16. A poster at cubs.com put together this one, to the tune of "American Pie": American Pie, Dusty Style
  17. Yeah, but that doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? :-)
  18. ARNE might have put it on the air, but sadly, he's no longer with us - like so many others who have passed away or been run out of town by a hypersensitive organization. :-( Congrats on becoming an All-Star at last!!! :D
  19. I'm thinking, "a runaway train headed for the canyon."
  20. Well, I agree that it's definitely better than paying them to play somewhere else. *COUGH* Sammy *COUGH* And it's been working for Beane as long as I can (conveniently?) remember.
  21. I don't believe in curses. I believe in strong fundamental baseball. Unfortunately, this team and its current manager don't. To borrow from your priceless Casey Stengel quote, curses are bogus excuses for poor execution.
  22. How does Ronny get to be the starting SS next year? I think he's sunk if one or both of the following happen: (1) Hendry re-signs Nomar. (I'm hoping that doesn't happen, actually. I'm thinking lately that Nomar is past his prime and thrives exclusively in the AL.); or (2) Baker and/or Hendry get fired. If I see Baker in the dugout and Neifi, Macias, or some other scrub in the middle IF next year (assuming decent players are healthy), I'm forming a militia to do some housecleaning.
