  1. I'm pretty sure they skipped Prior because a) they didnt want to pay the 10 million dollar signing bonus and b) Joe Mauer was the golden boy from St. Paul. If this were an alternate universe, Prior would be on the way to his 3rd Cy Young, and his second straight 300k season. But we have Dusty and Larry and Jimmy.
  2. Can't we at least get Shawon Dunston back too? And maybe Marvell Wynne to ride some pine?
  3. Statements like this just pile on the evidence against this staff. I certainly don't expect the Cubs to draw walks against Santana, but look at how the Twins won their last two games. They worked Clemens for 100 pitches over 5 innings. Last night, they worked Marmol for 106 pitches over 5.2 innings. It's no accident that the Cubs have seen the fewest pitches in the National League. I still think it is one of the strangest facts in the world. Not only do the Cubs hitters never walk, but the Cubs pitchers will seemingly walk everbody. If that were only reversed...
  4. Thank you. Jered Weaver under control for six years or possibly losing Aramis for nothing at season's end? hmmm.... If we are going to analyze it like this, shouldn't we assume that the Angels would need to look at it like that also? Why would they trade Weaver for a guy who could opt out of his contract at the end of this year? Thank you for adding some sanity. =D> To the proponents of a Weaver/Ramirez deal, how can any of you believe the Angels WOULD even consider offering Weaver for Ramirez? Best guess...the Angels would prolly offer Saunders and perhaps MacPherson (who the Cubs don't need) instead of Weaver. In other words...Jered is a PIPEDREAM. Even if we were to get Jered, the league's least potent offense would be losing it's main power threat. Which is why BBB's question about 3B is so important. Plus I know we would find a way to get Jered 140 pitches per game so he can do his Karen Wood impersonations for the rest of his shortened career.
  5. I think it is obvious that Murton has struggled, but I am not sure of the reasons why. It could be Dusty, but remember, it was Murton who said how much Dusty helped him last year. Either way though, I think it would be a huge mistake to send him to AAA, mainly for two reasons. First, it doesn't help Matt. He should stay up in the Bigs and gain experience that he can use next year and throughout his career. Second, and this is my worry, it shows that the Cubs a) think they can compete now and b) think Freddie Bynum is a better player than Murton. This year is history, I can't believe the Chubbs could be that stupid. Sadly though, I can easily understand how they think Freddie Bynum is a superior player. That's just how the management is. A player that barely breaks the .300 OBP mark should get 400 ABs. Where oh where is Mark Cuban!?
  6. Unless Jered Weaver has a rubber arm like Carlos, the Cubs will break him too.
  7. Who cares if there is somebody to replace him? You don't need a closer to win 70 games. At the rate he's going, you might have to replace him anyway by next season. Besides, Howry is having a much better year and could easily step into the role Howry is more affordable and has better peripherals. I'd rather keep him and deal Dempster, whose status as a "proven" closer might bring back more value in trade. what about next year & beyond? it should be easier to get a rf than a premier closer (which dempster was last year). maybe negron will be called up to play cf if they trade jones for cabrera & cabrera could play rf. i dont want to see howry close myself. he throws far too many fastballs imo and i would rather they trade howry than dempster. dempsters value is less so far this year anyway due to his recent struggles and the cubs would be selling low imo. It just kills me thatw ith all of the talent and all the mph that the Cubs accumulate in their system, they still cannot create a closer, so they spend more money and let more talent rot in the minors or on the bench.
  8. I'd be fine with giving Wells a shot, but I think Marmol is too talented to be a one inning guy.
  9. Go Cards- I have to root against the DH.
  10. Nah. This offseason will be different. This will finally be the offseason where we address the bullpen!
  11. So much for the Franchise. Now if Dusty can just get Z to break down, his work will be complete.
  12. No one can touch Melky Cabrera.
  13. Anybody else think he's getting under an awful lot of balls that last year he would have crushed? There was one last night in particular that would have been a home run in years past. Maybe he's pressing? Either way, he'll come around I think.
  14. His praise of the Furcal contract was a bit nuts.
  15. Maybe it's just me, but ToniTone looks like he's a much better leadoff option right now than Ivory. He's been taking pitches and making good contact and even drawing a walk. I'm not saying stick with him for the rest of the year, but so far, he looks like the fluke Womack the Cardinals got.
  16. Well sans Pujols and Edmonds, the Cards lineup is horrible.
  17. actually TWack is at .342. Hey, that's like .900 to Neifi!
  18. Unreal. TONY IS BATTING LIKE .900! JUST LET HIM SWING PLEASE.
  19. Good call. It's as if they are waiting till the third ball to swing, but not looking for the walk.
