just because he's willing to come to mlb for cheap doesn't mean money is completely irrelevant to him. it feels like seattle told him they'd be able to get a certain amount for him if he committed, they got word he's choosing them, and now they're just grabbing the money as quickly as possible to wrap this up. One could just as easily read it as the Mariners feeling some doubt and trying to bolster their chances. I just think that if you have a means to sweeten your offer in a competitive recruitment process, you take it. I don't think that freeing this money up is indicative of anything but a team doing just that. -

It seems to me that while there may be varying levels of confidence on their parts, none of these teams have any real idea what is going to happen and are simply trying to maximize their chances in whatever way they can. I have no particular confidence in the Cubs' chances, but these trades don't move the needle much for me. If the Mariners end up with Ohtani, it won't have much (or anything) to do with these trades, imo. Relative to other potential financial factors, the amounts being gained are a pittance. -
why would they do that? They suck balls and have no money. They'd be much better off ripping off the bandaid and losing every game for two years to stock up on prospects and high draft picks and slowly start to build a real team. There's value in an expansion or newly moved team to actually try to win some games and garner support from the new fans, but Miami has been here for 3 decades now and they are what they are, an afterthought. Why spend $75m to win 70 when you can spend $30m to win 68? It doesn't make sense to me, either. Of course they'd be better off tanking. But that rumor was making the rounds. Maybe the thought process is like some here had in the early stages of our rebuild, where they preferred the futile pretense of "trying" half-assedly rather than tanking full on.

It's not just Stanton, but Price, Heyward, Ohtani (not that the Cards showed a ton of interest in Ohtani, but he did eliminate them right off the bat), etc. The reputation of STL as a "baseball heaven" where virtually all players would like to be has taken a pretty sound thrashing over the past few seasons. The gripe among Cards fans was that DeWitt wouldn't spend the money. Now it appears players don't want it even when it is offered.

The Marlins owners have no money and have made it clear they are going to get rid of all costly players. There was a rumor that the Marlins' new ownership approached Stanton to warn him that if he would not accept any trade, virtually all other players of value would be sold off around him. This leads me to believe it might not be a full-on fire sale. The number being floated around for the Marlins projected target payroll is about 75MM. I'm sure they'd like to keep a couple of good players, at least. I guess what I am saying here is that if/when Stanton is traded to SF/LAD, it's entirely possible that the fish elect to keep Ozuna and/or Yelich, freezing the Cards out of any of them. Which would be horsefeathering glorious.

I’ve read a couple articles that say something to the effect of: StL is willing to send their top pitching prospect (Weaver). Well no horsefeathers - I would think it’ll be a minimum of 2 top pitching prospects + others. I know more than a few Cardinals fans seem to think that if they were to take on Stanton's full contract, they would only have to send second-tier prospects. Besides the fact that I can't see the Cards taking on all of that money, it would take two of Reyes/Weaver/Flaherty, plus others, IMHO. Anything less than that, and they will be outbid by another team.

Of course, if I were a Dodgers fan, I'd only be pretending to care. So I'd probably be fine.

I think that this is probably accurate, and I expect that he would veto just about any trade as well. And though I certainly do not have any great expectations at this point, I haven't completely given up hope for Heyward offensively.

It was a stupid, torturous series that should have ended two horsefeathering days ago. I'd like to forget the whole horsefeathering thing. That series was amazing and playoff baseball doesn't get much better than that. It's supposed to be torture. I'd agree if it hadn't also been so sloppy. But I'm sure I'll feel better about the whole thing tomorrow after my new ulcer has calmed down.
