  1. Alright, that makes sense to me. Thanks. Out of curiosity, do any of you Brewer fans know what they're planning for Braun and Gallardo? Both have been tearing it up in AAA in a short amount of time this season and probably could immediately upgrade the team upon getting called up.
  2. My understanding is that a .300 BABIP is above league average in BABIP (which I believe is somewhere between .280-.290) and all of those guys I mentioned have managed to hit above the .300 level to varying degrees. I know I singled out some players to make a point, but here are the BABIPs of the Brewers over the first month with more than 50 ABs (ABs in parentheses): Hardy (111): .301 Fielder (106): .303 Weeks (101): .250 Hall (95): .308 Estrada (82): .348 Jenkins (78): .393 Mench (72): .328 Graffanino (58): .265 Hart (58): .319 Counsell (55): .267 As a team: .301 Look, this team isn't due to come crashing down into the gutter from an offensive standpoint, but a number of their players have been above average when it comes to BABIP and it's reflected in the team's numbers as a whole. These numbers inevitably regress to a mean unless the team manages to get a horseshoe crammed up its rear (which is a possibility with this team). They're due for a few slumps and adjustments, which will make the coming months really interesting. Moreover, your depth/top end talent argument has me scratching my head. Are you saying that their bench is able to replace or match production if someone goes down, but that they do not have the top end talent in the starting lineup that a team such as the Cubs has? Or are you making another argument?
  3. The Brewers are most certainly an intriguing team. But, they're starting to develop into one of those teams which are yearly chic sleeper picks that end up not living up to expectations. That's not to say that the history of how people predict teams' success is a terrific indicator of future performance, but I think it is something that needs to be tempered for the time being. Hardy, Jenkins, Fielder, and Hall all have BABIPs that would be difficult to continue to sustain over the course of the season. Injuries and depth problems have hurt the Brewers in the past (although, I think Gallardo's got the goods to be a quality starter). I think they're a better team than they've been in the past, but I'm still skeptical about whether they'll be able to win the division. They're off to a good start, but they haven't built an insurmountable lead yet. There's still plenty of baseball left to go.

  5. Quite frankly, I think the talent is significantly better and deeper today than it has been at any time in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Jason Marquis could have been a 25 game winner with an ERA in the low 3s if he had pitched in the early 60s.
  6. Any team can develop a rabid fan following in a decent market. Places like Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City have proven that they can support major sports franchises despite having troubled baseball teams. The problem is, because of bad luck, poor ownership, and inept administration, they've managed to alienate most of their fans in impressive fashion. It's kind of like the Blackhawks in Chicago in some regards. Personally, I'm not in favor of contracting teams when the owners have been so terrible.
  7. Dolis with a decent outing. 5.2 scoreless with 3 hits, 4 BBs, and 4 Ks. Peoria's currently up 1-0.
  8. Marmol just had a mediocre outing on the 30th. He still needs to be straightened out in terms of control. If he learns to consistently throw strikes without attempting to make every other pitch go to the backstop, he'll be really good. Whether or not that will happen remains to be seen.
  9. Yes, this. I love Marshall, but he's not ready yet.
  10. So, I had an evil final yesterday, went into a drunken stupor all day, woke up early today and studied until 4, took a nap, and finally am getting caught up on what I missed. Looks like a hell of a day. :D

  17. Whenever these kinds of tragedies happen, it's difficult not to jump to conclusions. I remember when Lidle's death happened the day after he had a terrible performance and people thought that he had committed suicide. That did not turn out to be the case, despite some initial evidence to the contrary. I think it would be best for the sake of everyone's beliefs regarding the recently deceased to keep a lid on certain opinions and speculation. Perhaps you want to make light of the situation or to come to some inferences that, while not unreasonable, would somehow be condemning of the recently departed. I do not think this thread is the place for that. Death is one of the most difficult things any person has to deal with in their lives. Some of us have developed radically different responses to it which inevitably come into conflict with one another, as we have seen in this thread so far. NSBB has a large and diverse group of people and this is a public forum. Because of the sensitive nature of this topic, otherwise calm people might be prone to over-react or take some statements personally despite the fact that they might be responding to someone who did not mean ill by it. It might not be a bannable offense to have certain opinions, but sharing those opinions and fighting over them sure as heck can lead to bannable offenses. For now, I hope that we can keep this thread and those which will follow as more details emerge civil and respectful.
  18. Several times. I think Mickey Morandini is the most recent to do it. furcal Yep. It was seemingly routine, but a sweet play.
  19. Well, if we can't have a sweep in baseball today, we might as well have one in basketball. :D
  20. Here's a video of the FB the Dolphins just drafted, who reportedly played last season at over 300 pounds! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpiMUKfSKIQ Some nsfw language, but it's hilarious.
  21. I just saw a picture of his Ford Explorer. You can see it on MSNBC if you wish, but I will not link to it here. The entire driver's side of his car is mangled, to put it mildly. I don't think the seatbelt would have made a lick of difference.
  22. Samardzija got hit pretty hard (10 H in 5.1 IP), but he managed to only get tagged with 3 R and 2 ER. The D-Cubs game is currently tied at 3 at the top of the 7th.
  23. I repeat since I don't have much information about Vitters offhand: How does he compare to Bill Rowell last year? I really liked Rowell, by the way. Thanks. :D
  24. Apparently LaRussa wanted to be the one to contact Hancock's father.
