Potentially, but the problem with PTBNLs at this point in the season is that you never know where a guy will end up come June/July. If they make Flaherty a PTBNL and he's out for the season with a torn hamstring come June/July, the Padres will look like morons. Well we could do what the Brewers did with CC they had a PTBNL and gave the Indians two choices between michael brantley and taylor green. We could give them 3 choices say they can pick from Flaherty, Carpenter or Jackson. That way they get time to scout them over most of the summer and pick who they think is the best one. Again, you risk the same problem. Because these guys are recent draftees, there's not much of a track record on which these teams can go on. The Indians at least had a book on Brantley and Green built up before they submitted both names to the Brewers in the PTBNL pool since both had played in the minors for a few years. They also had time to more thoroughly scout both before consummating the Sabathia deal. Teams don't have that luxury in these kinds of offseason deals. It's not like the Padres can send a ton of scouts to catch Jay Jackson's next start, you know? They only have a limited book on these guys. I'm not saying it can't happen. I'm just saying it's really unlikely and a bad decision to make for the Padres.
