    Kinda weird that we're a week out and there isn't much buzz. I'd figure we'd at least start hearing the usual "X Team in the Top 5 has an under slot deal worked out with dude ranked #58 overall" rumors by now, but nada.

    I mean, I can see their draft board being set up a certain way such that a prep pitcher *could* be BPA at their pick, but it would probably involve something like the top HS pitcher (Gio Rojas?) unexpectedly plummeting to 23. I just don't think it's realistic, though, even with Zombro having a bigger role in scouting and development. As for Kerce, he sounds like the sort of guy the Cubs take every draft (sometimes multiple times in the same draft), so yeah, that totally tracks.

    It's also worth remembering that for every Nolan Ryan, you had dozens of Mike Harkeys and Calvin Schiraldis, not to mention the hundreds of dudes who never made it through high school/college/the minors because their arms blew out with zero hope of recovery. Those guys were the exceptions, not the rule. It's also also worth remembering that the mound was lowered in 1968, resulting in a substantial offensive uptick.

    Part of the reason Hartshorn fell to the Cubs in the draft was due to a significant arm injury he'd dealt with his senior year of HS, which forced him to hit from only one side of the plate his senior year. He's had a great season, but if you are using health history as a reason to ding guys, he has to be among them.

    It also helps to remember that, over the last 20 years, there have been massive advances in the Science of Baseball (for lack of a better term), particularly when it comes to hitting. It's not just things like advanced stats (although those helped), where teams have figured out things like optimal swing paths and launch angles, and have also invested heavily in technological advances for developing hitters and gaining a competitive edge. We've apparently gotten to the point where you can feed data about any pitcher in baseball into a pitching machine and have it mimic that pitcher reasonably well. Velocity appears to be the only thing that consistently generates swing and miss.

    Some people think he has some projection left in him, and he's been getting results despite the lack of velo. The system is still light when it comes to pitching, so it's unsurprising to see guys like him pop up every now and again.

    Everyone who engages in prospecturbation has That Guy. You know the one, where you fell in love because of plus-plus power or a 98 mph fastball with movement, and you became convinced he was a future perennial All Star, only for the guy to either never reach the majors, or fall flat on his face and never recover. Who's your That Guy, and why is it Juan Cruz or Brian Dopirak?

    I liked his post-game interview, where he kept his response measured because he knew the mics picked up what Cavalli said and everyone within earshot (except the umps) heard it. Contreras can be a putz, but he deserves kudos for not laying Cavalli out.

    It's not, but a lot of factors are not on his side for him flipping his WAR into the positives. You might luck out and get a few games out of him with 5+ IP and minimal damage down the stretch, but all signs point to falling off the regression cliff for Jamo.

    I have to imagine they play it very, very cautiously with him. Being in the ACL means he has immediate access to high quality trainers, facilities, and medical staff, and with a back injury like he had, they'll likely want to be extremely careful with him. He'll get promoted in due time, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the ACL for a few weeks.

    Ethan Conrad just made his season debut in the ACL and hit a 105 mph single in his first plate appearance.

    Side note, it's nice to see the Doom Squad being positive! I've wanted to strangle a handful of you over the last two months and it's good to see you're not all the types who come out of the woodwork when this team sucks, only to go back to ground when the Cubs hit a random ten game winning streak or 15-5 stretch.
