    It's a bit troubling, but the Cubs have also shown improvement in making swing and approach adjustments to their power hitters compared to the Hendry era. I wouldn't read too much into it, particularly considering Myrtle Beach had the extended hurricane layoff and he just finished playing a full college season. If this keeps up next season, then it will undeniably be cause for concern.

    TINSTAAP strikes again. Shaw's looking primed for that #1 spot in the system anyways.

    As will be discussed at length when the NSBB Top 20s are released, there are roughly 30 guys in the system who can make a convincing argument for being in spots 11-20 on those lists. It basically comes down to personal preference for things like ceiling, floor, handedness, etc.

    Also worth noting regarding Alcantara's HR numbers is how the baseball was doctored in the Southern League (again) for a good chunk of the first half.

    I don't want to get excited about this team because it's had a few stretches where they fell flat on their faces after showing signs of life. But damnit, I'm getting excited.

    It's not quite as bad as it was last season, but a decent 4/5 starter is probably #3 on the needs list going into 2025, behind Catcher and Closer. I like the current depth, but the injuries to Brown, Wicks, and Horton have been seriously aggravating this season.

    MLBTR was speculating about it a few days ago. based on Nido's surgery. Nothing concrete.

    Ballesteros is a catcher much in the same way Kyle Schwarber was a catcher. He can play the position in a pinch, and maybe you can get away with him starting at catcher for 10-15 games over the course of a season, but he seems ticketed for DH/LF long term.

    Mathis is a fascinating case to me. On the one hand, the models and metrics all seem to love his bat and he should presumably move quickly through the lower levels if he comes as advertised. On the other hand, I'm curious as to his eventual position. The Cubs announced him as a 3B when they drafted him, but I believe he got most of his playing time at 1B in college. He has the arm and athleticism to be an everyday 3B, but if he needs the reps, he'll likely start at a lower level than Cam Smith so he can work on his development. It also helps that Mathis turned 21 a week ago, so him starting at a lower level wouldn't be the worst thing for him. Food for thought. We'll see how the next few weeks shake out.
