Catcher development is really horsefeathers weird. If you look back on guys like Geo Soto, Welly Castillo, Willson Contreras, and even Miguel Amaya, all of those guys were kinda middling prospects who bounced around the minors without much hype until they unexpectedly broke out. All this is to say, I've learned to take reports on Cubs catchers in the minors with a grain of salt, and I don't think it would be a good idea to give up on Amaya just yet.

There was speculation based on a Cubs' area scout's Twitter that the Cubs may have interest in a handful of HS guys who are still available: RHP Carson Wiggins (Jaxon's brother), RHP/1B Eli Buxton, LHP Alex Grant, and OF Eli Lovich. Wiggins is the highest rated of that group, as some of us wanted him with the Cubs' 2nd round pick, although my guess is the Cubs will have trouble meeting his asking price.

They were picking mid-round without any extra picks in what has generally been seen as a mediocre draft overall. I didn't come into today with high hopes, but I actually didn't mind that they targeted EVs and swing speed guys, since this system hasn't exactly been great at churning out power bats, It's possible they pop someone like Wiggins or Franco tomorrow to spice things up, but we'll see.

I agree whole-heartedly; getting him and Tibbs would be a fantastic outcome for a team with only one pick in the Top 100. I'm just curious to see how they make it work.

I (kinda) get it. LSU has a fantastic program with a long track record, plus the NIL money will offset any immediate losses if he's not getting Top 20 money. Not saying I agree, but I understand.

I've had a soft spot for Brecht for awhile, and he makes for an intriguing underslot candidate, but he brings a lot of risk to the table as a guy with command/control issues, an undeveloped third pitch, and also coming from a program that's not known for developing and producing high end pitchers. Iowa also apparently mucked with his mechanics, meaning he's basically a teardown/rebuild type. You run a very real risk that he never makes the majors. I'd be excited if the Cubs took him, but he's got a ton of work to do.

We're entering my favorite part of MLB Draft season. It feels like the last day or two before the draft, you finally start to get concrete news about things like what teams are cutting deals (underslot or overslot), which guys are getting taken off the board due to commitments/demands, and also last minute risers/fallers coming out of team workouts and interviews.

Remember when the Nick Madrigal experiment at 3B was initially derided because the knock on him was a noodle arm? The Cubs clearly have something in place to assist with that, given that Madrigal's arm improved enough to make him a decent 3B. Plus, it might not be an arm strength issue so much as it's a technique issue. Even then, MLB has had its share of success stories of catchers who sucked at throwing out runners.
