  2. yeah, that stuff with Scott sounds sketchy for sure It happens more frequently than you think. A friend of mine works for a scouting group. One of their clients was picked in the supplemental first round a year or two ago and had a prearranged deal with the team that drafted him. After the draft, someone got in dear old dad's ear that his son was worth even more money and that he could be signed to a bigger deal. Dad informed the team that his son would not be signing unless the team added another $500k to the signing bonus. When the team threatened to walk away altogether, everyone shaped up and signed on the original deal's dotted line.
  3. AND playing RF! I feel kind of schadenfreudey. Is this how Cardinals fans felt when the Cubs were playing Aaron Miles regularly?
  4. He tends to hit a wall around the 5th or 6th inning. It may just be a conditioning issue for him.
  5. The bottom line for me is that I agree with you 99%. Garza is having an excellent year and, even if his production declines in the next two seasons, he still would be valuable to the team as a 2-3 WAR pitcher. He is most certainly worth keeping around even if he drops to that level. However... The remaining 1% is based off the feeling I get that Garza's value may never be higher. As I mentioned, my skepticism is based on the fact that he's having a career year, namely as far as FIP, xFIP, and WAR go. I'll admit it, my basis for having that skepticism is somewhat flimsy, but so be it. If I were running a team that was effectively punting 2012 in favor of competing in 2013 and beyond, Garza would be a really difficult case for me. On the one hand, he's young, he's pitching really well, and he'll still be with the team come 2013. On the other hand, if a team were to offer a package of prospects/young players equivalent to his value (say, the Rangers offering a package built around Martin Perez and Jurickson Profar)...I'd really have to think about it. I don't think Garza should be actively shopped around. But, if someone came along with a serious offer for Garza and I didn't think this team was capable of contending in 2012, I'd be tempted.

  7. I strongly considered putting Garza in that group, but he's not on the same level as Soto or Castro are for me. Garza's on pace for the best year of his career by a longshot and I'm skeptical about whether or not he'd be able to keep that up over the next two years. Putting it bluntly, he's a fantastic sell high candidate. He should be worth a ton in the trade market and I don't think he should be untouchable. Even in his down years, Soto is still an above average catcher compared to the rest of MLB. I'm doubtful the Cubs could get Soto's 2011 production from Castillo/Clevenger going forward. Unless you think some team will grossly overpay to get him, Soto should not be traded.
  8. There's really no reason to blow this team up. The division is likely to be mediocre, at best, next year and there are some really big time FAs on the market this offseason. The only reason we should trade Aramis is if somebody blows us away, but if we do I think we can still have a chance to compete next year with the right moves. Who would you trade as part of blowing the team up? If the Cubs are attempting a run in 2012, I'd shop Pena and seriously listen to offers for Zambrano and Soriano. The goal would be to keep most of the team intact while substantially upgrading areas where holes will exist in the offseason (1B, SP, and possibly OF). If there are no plans of competing, then I would advocate seriously listening to offers for everyone on this team short of Castro and Soto. Ramirez, Pena, Byrd, Zambrano, Dempster, you name it. The goal would be to acquire as many quality prospects as possible and get as much payroll flexibility as possible for a splash after the 2012 offseason to compete in 2013 and beyond.
  9. No way his production can be replaced internally. We'd have to get very creative on the trade market or sign an entire new outfield. Gonna be tough to do it all and replace the FO is the same offseason. We could get away with some unholy combination of DeWitt/Baker/Flaherty/LeMahieu/Vitters next season if this team was better, but I just don't think the offense is good enough to cover for that kind of downgrade from Ramirez and I don't think the pitching is good enough to compensate for that loss of offense.
  10. If Ramirez is traded, the entire team should be blown up. I just don't see how this team could compete without him, especially considering the list of available 3Bs in free agency in the offseason is ugly. I don't see anyone in this system capable of replacing his production come 2012, either.
  11. Michael Jensen confirmed. Excellent signing. Plus, Raisin should be thrilled since it deprives Southern Cal of a pretty good commitment. Video
  12. We weren't going to get any comp picks for Fukudome, the season was lost, and the Cubs save money. I'm sad to see Fukudome go, but at least the Cubs got something for him.

  14. Storen was a major budget pick. The Nats had the 10th overall pick that year because they failed to sign Aaron Crow the previous year, meaning that pick was unprotected. Adding onto things, Storen was taken the same year they took Strasburg, meaning the Nationals had to save money with their later picks. Storen's a good player, but don't be swayed by where he was picked.

  19. None of this information has been confirmed, either. We need to be cautious. However, between this draft, the potential 2012 top 5 draft pick, the emergence of legitimately intriguing Latin American position prospects in the DSL and AZL, and the possibility that one of the high ceiling arms in Peoria/Boise has a breakout season next year, there is reason for optimism for this farm system going forward.
  20. I'm still not convinced that I'm definitely going to put Vogelbach/Maples in my top 10 (of the two, I think I may slot Maples at 10), but Dunston Jr.? Not sure he's going to be in an end of the season top 20 for me. If so, he'll crack the back end, that 15-20 area where I am tempted to go with a lot of upper level relievers. That pretty much sums it up for me. I'd have Baez as a Top 3, Vogelbach and Maples in the 10-15 range, and Dunston Jr. probably somewhere in the 20-25 area.
  21. Sickels' Top 20 in Review They have a few intriguing high levels LHPs in Wade Miley and Pat Corbin and two projectable young RHPs in Robbie Rowland and JR Bradley. If we're lucky, the Cubs might get one of each for Pena.
