  1. Fake tan indeed. I have a hard time believing Toews has anything remotely resembling a sense of humor.
  2. Apparently CB Bucknor has diarrhea. Heh heh.
  3. Discussion question of the day: What do we make of Marwin Gonzalez? He's 22 and has mostly split time between 2B and SS with Tennessee and Iowa this season, with a smattering of CF in AA. In 216 ABs with Tennessee, he hit .301/.359/.421 with a 27/17 K/BB, 2 HRs, and a .335 BABIP. In 67 ABs with Iowa, he's hit .358/.392/.537 with a 5/5 K/BB, 1 HR, and a .367 BABIP. I haven't seen a whole lot in the way of his defensive reviews, but he's only had 11 errors between AA and AAA, so it seems as if he has handled himself well enough in the field. Most of his success appears to be batting-average driven, but he's kept his Ks down and seems to draw enough walks to keep the "hacker" label at bay. Compared to previous seasons, it seems as if he has improved his batting average, walks, and power. A September callup is not out of the question if he continues hitting like he has been. Is he a flash in the pan? Should he be in the conversation for the Cubs' Top 10?
  4. BA's take at the time. Bourn and Costanzo were both considered above average prospects at the time, although neither was considered a Top 100 guy. After the trade, they were 5 and 6 on BA's Astros Top 10 List, which featured the immortal JR Towles as the #1 prospect in that system. Towles came up #53 on BA's Top 100 list that year and was the only Astro on it. Bourn's turned out phenomenally for the Astros, but in terms of how that deal looked at the time, if the Cubs get an equivalent return for Marshall as the Astros did for Lidge, I'd be kind of iffy on the deal.
  5. I think Marshall is worth keeping, but mostly because I think he will be a helpful part of the 2012 team if he's still around. I think the Cubs can compete next season. Having Marshall in the bullpen as the 8th inning guy/occasional closer would be a boon for the bullpen. He's good and he's cheap. I don't know if there is anyone on the team or on the farm who can step in and be as effective as Marshall next season. Plus, I'm not a huge fan of throwing money at free agent relievers. However, if some team is willing to overpay for Marshall along the lines of offering up a Top 50 prospect for him, I'd be happy to see him traded.

  7. BCB has a poster on there who's done a pretty good job of being ahead of the curve in terms of reporting whom the Cubs have signed and when, even before news of those signings is released. He recently stated that the Cubs have signed Urban, Maples, and Dunston. If true, it's fantastic news.
  8. Peoria ended their six game losing streak. Liria piggybacked del Valle and had a solid outing.
  9. Not really. If a hanging slider right down the middle of the plate is better. I'll take what I can get with this team.
  10. Fantastic stop by Johnson, but he should have eaten that.
  11. Woo Castro. Pretty sure that pitch was about a quarter of an inch off the ground when he hit it.
  12. Given that Andrew Cashner is still undergoing rehab and hasn't even made any appearances in the minors yet, I think there's a really good possibility that he starts in AAA next season. The Cubs will have to monitor his usage very closely and he likely won't be able to go deep into games at the beginning of the season. It'd be easier to bring him back to full strength in the minors. Considering the Cubs' in-house options are not exactly palatable, they may have to bring someone in to fill the #5 rotation spot, at least until Cashner's healthy.
  13. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

  16. Austin Reed was doing pretty well until the sixth, when this happened:
  17. You're pretty much doing this for the lulz, aren't you?
  18. I'm inclined to agree with Truffle. I don't think anyone would care a whole lot if his name were Trevor Smith. He's a good athlete with legitimate power, but he needs a lot of work at the plate and in the field. That sort of thing would be intriguing for a catcher or shortstop, but for someone who seems ticketed for 1B, that's not exactly encouraging. Still, it's good to see he signed.
  19. It's conceivable. The NL Central isn't very good. I don't see the point of trading Soriano just for the sake of trading him. The Cubs are probably parting ways with Fukudome after this season, meaning they'd have two holes to fill in the OF for 2012 if they traded Soriano. Plus, even if the Cubs ate a substantial chunk of Soriano's salary, I don't see them getting a better return than they did when they kicked Sammy Sosa to the curb. There are some intriguing names among the FA OFs, but I'm not really enamored with the options.
  20. The Cubs didn't seem to get much pitching in the draft, either. After Maples and Jacquez, there are maybe a handful of guys who are kind of interesting, but seemingly no one with those kinds of ceilings. Injuries have saapped pitching depth this year, too. Losing Whitenack to TJS hurt. McNutt's blister problem has been disconcerting, although he could finish the season strong. Simpson still doesn't seem to be fully recovered from mono, plus there have been whispers about his shoulder.

  22. Andrew Cashner was a reliever for only one season in college. Prior to transferring to TCU for his junior season, he was a starting pitcher.
  23. You rarely see midseason promotions for first year DSL players. I think that's partly because teams don't want to push young players too much in their first pro season (especially considering they're being pushed to a foreign country) and also because of visa crunches. I don't think Candelario will have any visa issues; he was born in New York City.
