Given the candidates that have been interviewed, or that the Cubs have been linked to, is there a common theme that we can derive from these candidates? I know Latin background, ability to develop young players, streamlined communication with the FO, etc. but is there one theme that's been more prevalent than any other during the interview/search process? Also, other than just being interested in the process and end result, do you guys really care about the whole manager thing? Before I started reading this site, I remember getting really excited about the Baker and Piniella hirings (started lurking the board around '06) but I've now come to the realization that in most cases, the search for a new manager is mostly a media-driven hoopla. Having said that, I'm coming around now to the idea that this hire is a bit more important than I initially believed. With the regression of castro/rizzo, the new manager hire is quite important as the next couple of years are absolutely critical for the FO's plan to come to fruition. Current market trends with respect to FA and how it relates to ownership's inability to spend is going to put the Cubs in a really huge hole if the prospects and Castro/Rizzo don't develop into above average/all-star level players, especially with the Cardinals {redacted} being loaded for the next 5-6 years.
