  1. I get this feeling that this game will be like game 7 - at least at the start where we all come in with frayed nerves and the Cubs put several runs on the board early and we all think 'wow this is easier than I was expecting', except this time it stays that way. The only time its in doubt is in the 8th inning when the Nats load the bases with 2 outs...Davis comes in and gets the job done this time and works through an easy 9th. Cubs win 6-3.
  2. and no javy against a lefty? Just pretend its Javy's face
  3. The lineup should be interesting. Gio is starting so we will have our lefty lineup in there, but I totally expect for him to get pulled at the first sign of trouble and Scherzer to come in who, as we know, destroys righties. Then once he's done we're left with a bullpen who is lefty heavy. So how much Joe swaps out people midgame will likely depend on how desperate we are for runs in the middle innings. Because if Max is facing a stable of righties, the chances of runs being scored is low (well low regardless, but even lower). But if you swap them all with lefties, Dusty can throw a bunch of lefties at the Cubs in the later innings and you might have someone like Schwarber taking a key at bat against a LHP because the bench is empty. Edit: For instance, what do you do about Almora? If he starts, he will likely get pulled midgame and you dont have your best PH bat and good defensive replacement for later in the game. So do you keep him out of the lineup so you can use him later?
  4. How have we been handily outplayed in this series? Haven't you been counting? The Nationals have had two legitimately good offensive innings in this series. Two!! How are we supposed to compete with that?? I'm on team optimism but how many have we had? 2 run inning in Game 1, 2 run inning (on HR) in game 2, then a bunch of single run innings.
  5. Uhhhhhhhhh...not a big Gio Gonzalez fan? You think Gio Gonzalez is better than Kyle Hendricks?
  6. I'm not as skeptical as you, but I agree. This overconfidence is crazy. It's 1 game. How can anyone be so damn confident? Our offense hasn't hit anyone this series. Not just Strasburg or Scherzer. One thing I'm happy about based on yesterday. No more Madmen gifs. Good riddance. If you honestly think anyone is truly overconfident that we will win a crapshoot winner take all Game 5, you are just wrong. You can be optimistic or pessimistic, you can display confidence or doubt. I choose to be confident.
  7. Regarding the offense, it's too bad you didn't watch the playoffs last year. Yes there are a couple different guys and its a different season, but the majority of the offense will be made up of guys who played on a team that got shut out 4 times in 13 LCS/WS games, including twice in a row in the NLCS, and 2 of the first 3 games of the World Series. What did the Cubs do after getting shut out 2 times in a row against the Dodgers? They scored 24 runs in the next 3 games including 5 off of Kershaw to win the series. What did they do after getting shut out in games 1 and 3 of the World series? ...Well they struggled for 2 more games and then broke out for 9 and 8 runs in the last 2 games to win the title. The Cubs are streaky but when they get out of slumps they get out of them in a hurry. I'm not saying the Cubs are a lock to win or anything but I expect the Cubs to come through until they don't. I have full faith in Kyle, and Gio honestly does not scare me at all. Sure having Scherzer in the middle innings scares me but so did Andrew Miller in Game 7 and we scored 2 off of him.
  8. Oh god we should just lose then, horsefeathers that
  9. I don't know why this is weird to me but it seems strange that Avila hasn't made a single appearance in the series. Not that there has been an obvious spot for him but he's a pretty good hitter to be completely absent in the series. I believe him and Lackey are the only 2 to not make an appearance so far
  10. Doesn't surprise me after Cherrington left and they hired Dave Dombrowski. That seems like a clear step away from their forward thinking past
  11. Holy hell Allen takes forever to throw pitches. This top of the 9th has lasted like 45 mins. Just get to the bottom half dammit
  12. Yeah they could get shut down or whatever but a couple of reasons to be confident: 1) I trust Kyle Hendricks to be just as dominant as anyone the Nats can throw at the Cubs 2) seriously Scherzer on 2 days rest coming off an injury? Even if he starts out strong there is a good chance his stuff doesn't last all that long 3) this team has come back from the dead a billion times Anything can happen in game 5. I'll take the team that's done it before and is relying on pitchers who are rested
  13. I wish Twitter is going crazy about too but only based on FS1 saying it. Even if he did start he couldn't go more than like 3 innings
  14. Andy went 9-3 this year, I say roll with him. If it was UMFan's 8-8, different story (sorry UMFan). I mean the last time I started the Cubs went on a 6 game winning streak to turn around their season but w/e
  15. Someone start the game 5 thread. I want to talk about how badly we are going to crush them tomorrow so Nats fans visiting for schadenfreude have an experience similar to the end of the Grinch that Stole Christmas
  16. Why not? It's not going to affect the outcome of the game and I'd rather display confidence and swagger then pessimism and weakness
  17. The only thing that has really disappointed me has been the defensive lapses. I expected runs would be at a premium, and the Nats caught a huge beak with the rainout. sale, kluber, kershaw, and grienke gave all been knocked around this postseason. 8 runs in 4 games is disappointing. it's hard for me to care too much about the rainout when we got the massive scherzer break to begin with. oh well, if we do end up losing, I guess it's easier to swallow this way instead of heartbreaking losses What massive Scherzer break? One of Strasburg/Scherzer was going to start twice and the other once and that's what happened. Plus Scherzer absolutely dominated in his start and should be available out of the pen in game 5. And Strasburg dominated in both his starts so it's not like you can say the Nats would be better off with Max starting twice instead. The ability of the Nats to start Gio a second time instead of Tanner Roark, by far the worst starter on either team, was a dramatic break for Washington
  18. You don't sac bunt in front of the pitcher. I think he's suggesting Javy try to bunt for a hit. If he reaches there is 2 on and 0 out and you can lift Lester if needed
  19. they're obviously very good, but they had ERAs in the mid 2s this season, it's not like they were flirting with no hitters and striking out 10+ batters every game. I didn't say it was all them, just that this isn't a case of the offense just going to sleep. I do think most of our guys seem to be pressing a bit. And the inability to realize Strasburg was going to the low change in almost every two-strike count tonight was pretty infuriating. No I literally think the reason is that a top 5 pitcher in baseball has pitched 60% of the innings in this series for the Nationals and their top 2 relievers most of the rest of the innings. When they put in a Solis or Gio Gonzalez or Oliver Perez we've capitalized.
  20. Strasburg and Scherzer have combined to pitch almost 60% of the Nationals innings in this series (20/34 when Strasburg was pulled)
  21. At least we made their 8th inning guy throw 20+ pitches before game 5. I'm sure they will go Gio-Scherzer and then like Strasburg to close it out though
  22. Amazing that immediately after Strasburg leaves the Cubs start getting base runners
  23. Pulling Lester with 2 outs and a runner on first, not pulling Carl until 2 batters after it was clear he was bad Carl, letting his closer pitch to 2 extra batters in a 5 run game with Game 5 in 24 hours
  24. It's like amazing to see a pitcher that's not Strasburg or Scherzer. Immediately we start making contact. We really got screwed in this series.
