  1. More like a groundball turned into a 4 base error because he ain't hitting one over the fence.
  2. 75 wins in the NL, and we only have a 4.5 game lead. I hate this. We'd have an 8-game bulge in the East and a commanding 10-game lead in the West. Its nice to be in the dominant divsion in the league, but also a bit unfair (while wearing the Cubbie blue shades). Of course, not quite as unfair as its going to be for either the Cards or Brewers to be the 3rd best team in the NL, but be left at home due to how the playoffs/seedings are set up. I don't even care about the division, I care about the fact that we are 6.5 up on a red hot Cardinal team. That's our playoff cushion.
  3. Worst night possible. Cubs lose, Brewers win, Cardinals win, Dodgers lose, Arizona wins. The Cardinals just won't go away :( And to boot the White Sox won (cue 15 posts about how you don't care about what the White Sox do)
  4. There's absolutely no reason to get mad at this game. For awhile we were leading the MLB in BA with RISP. Tonight we got tons of baserunners but couldn't get that big hit. Gonna happen sometimes. I'm just more upset that the Cardinals won't die.
  5. Unless you are talking about counting stats like HR and RBI, I highly doubt it. Lee 07: .317/.400/.513/.913 Lee 08: .289/.353/.467/.820 Not sure where to look up vorp or eqa but I'd venture a guess that those are significantly higher in 07 as well. Either way, it would take a historic month of September to get him up to his 07 numbers.
  6. Love love love Pat Hughes, but the man is slipping quite a bit. I have definitely noticed a higher rate of mistaken HR calls "THERES A DRIVE DEEP TO LEFT, THIS ONE....is going to be caught by the LF, 1 away." in recent years, but last night was horrible. In the 9th inning when Hermida was AB, Soto dropped 2 foul tips that would have been strikeouts in the AB. Both times Pat said on the air "HE GOT HIM! TWO AW- oh wait Soto dropped the ball, its a foul tip." Do you know how frustrating this is to hear on the radio when you are clinging to every word in a tense game. Again, I love Pat Hughes, but you have to contain yourself a bit to limit the mistakes. My heart dropped multiple times in that 9th inning.
  7. Marquis threw 93 pitches 3 days ago, that's odd. I wish we could DFA Howry and bring up Lieber to back him up
  8. I've never seen a team that is 28 games over .500 in mid-August bench a player that had a +.900 OPS the previous year with very good defense and is generally considered the team leader.
  9. I smell a misquote
  10. Ugh, great video, but I can't stand to see Cubs fans making tribute videos about Jim Edmonds when about 80% of them said they hated the move for reasons other than his potential horrible performance with the Cubs.
  11. Number one on this list: Having a good organization that puts a team into the postseason frequently. If you only get in once every ten years or so, your chances of winning it all decrease significantly. Let's hope that we're starting to see the early signs of the Cubs no longer being MLB's worst organization. Hey if we make the playoffs this year, thats 3 times in the last 6 years, 4 out of 6 years over .500 (and 5 out of 8), and 5 out of the 6 years (and 6 out of 8) with at least 79 wins. Then again a lot of it wasn't because we had this great organization that planned for it with smart moves, a lot of it is just throwing money at problems. But the last year or so I feel the org. finally grasps the concept.
  12. The thing I like is that the Cubs have all the pieces that you need to weigh things on your side and give you better odds of succeeding -Great top end starting pitching -Very good bullpen -Balanced patient offense But even still, we see teams with all those crap out in the first round. The Angels have been doing it for years. In fact, look at the 2007 Angels and tell me that team doesn't remind you a little bit of this year's Cubs team. Just stop this and enjoy the ride. The Cubs have a dominant team with likable players. They are really soapdropping good. Wait and see what happens before starting to obsess about the down side of the playoffs. It's like Royko wrote, "An optimist looks at the glass and says it's half full. A pessimist looks at the glass and says it's half empty. A Cubs fan looks at the glass and says when is going to spill." You are completely right, and now that the Cubs have put some decent space between themselves and the Cardinals, I am starting to really relax and enjoy the ride. But I just can't allow myself to dream of the Cubs in the World Series until we potentially get there.

  14. Fielder will be moved. I don't think he wants to be there long term. They will recycle with prospects. That is what small market teams have to do. Determine which players are long term assets, try to lock them up early (like Braun) and the players that don't want to be long term or want big paydays, they have to find the perfect time to trade them for the best return. A few years into the system, they should have already acquired a prospect that is ready to replace Fielder anyways.
  15. It's a shame but I remember reading posts on this board that suggested Zambrano's ERA was a bit healthy based on his FIP (Dempster too). This is just an evening out.
  16. Tough call for me, the Dodgers are better I'm pretty sure and their offense is more dangerous when healthy. However, when Arizona's pitching is on, they can beat anyone in a short series and I hate facing them. IMO, it will be different with HFA this time. I just think we've had better success with the Dodgers pitchers than we have Arizona's. I am not worried about the Cubs pitchers neutralizing the Dodger hitters as much as I am facing Webb 2 times in a 5 game series. I am certainly not saying the Dodgers pitchers are bad, we all saw Kudora dominate us, and Billingsley has great stuff and other than a Lee HR really pitched well against us at Wrigley. But Webb/Haren vs. Billingsley/Kudora, I'll take the later.
  17. They become what the Reds were before they dealt Dunn. My thoughts exactly, basically. Gallardo - FA - Parra - Suppan - Bush Not great but I don't think the Brewers were intending on being a one and done team, although this was certainly their big push. There's a decent list of FA pitchers that they could get for less than Sheets or Sabathia. I know they already think Gallardo can be on that Sheets/Sabathia level with time (or possibly even now) Burnett Dempster Garland Oliver Perez to name a couple. Definitely not on the same level as CC/Sheets but still good enough to make them relevant. Also they still have several tradeable prospects to swing a deal for a pitcher. Who knows, I am just trying to say that we shouldn't assume the Brewers will just go away after this year because they have a lot of leverage to improve (after losing Sheets/CC).
  18. Yeah, if the team that has the player says, "okay, you can have him," then the team that makes the claim gets the player, and his salary. D'oh I forgot about that. I can't remember what it was, but that backfired for some team (it was probably the Mets) and they got stuck with a bad contract.
  19. Is there any penalty for claiming players and not trading for them? I wonder what wouldn't stop a team from claiming every single player no matter what just so no one else can make trades.
  20. This is probably nitpicking, but Gallardo didn't tear both ACLs -- he only tore his right ACL in the game against the Cubs. The other injury you're thinking of is probably the arthroscopic knee surgery he had on his left knee during Spring Training to clean up some torn cartilage...a relatively minor procedure (although the saying "there's no such thing as minor surgery" comes to mind). I agree that it's incredibly stupid to rush him back, though. Apparently his knee is almost full-strength, but he needs to build up his arm strength again. The problem is, with minor league seasons wrapping up soon, he might not have anywhere to go on rehab assignments. Considering the Brewers' future pretty much rests on that surgically-repaired knee (which also happens to be his plant leg), I'd be more apt to let him continue his rehab on his own throughout the rest of the season and come back full strength for the start of Spring Training. It'd be nice to have him in the bullpen, but it's not necessary to make the playoffs, and it'd be crippling to the franchise if he wound up with an arm injury because he's overcompensating for a weak leg. and enter next season without him (and Sheets and Sabathia) I hope people don't think that the Brewers are going to be a non-factor because of Sheets and CC leaving.
  21. How annoying is replay going to be at Wrigley with no video replay board for the fans. The fans are just going to be sitting there confused for 10 minutes.
  22. Eh he could probably use the work, not having been used since Sunday
  23. He had better not be on the playoff roster, even. Anyone in the minors we can call up to replace him if he gets DFA'ed? How's Wuertz doing? Not that great.
  24. True, thats a simple way to look at it. But the thing is, in this NL I think you have a better shot at beating this crapshoot by having a better team, or at least hypothetically since a lot of teams can't matchup on talent. It just upsets me to think that the Cubs could win 100 games, but go into the playoffs cold and get swept away again. It's not like getting hot or cold is something you can really control. It's basically just something that happens as a fluke.
