    I think the bullpen past Wood and Marmol was getting to be a pretty significant problem for the Cubs at the end of the season. And it just got worse. I hope Hendry has something else up his sleeve for the pen, because it needs work now.

    It will never be the same as a homegrown player that broke onto the scene with the one of the most dominating performances in baseball history in his 5th major league start. Jake might do better for the Cubs than Kerry ever did, but it will never completely be the same. But you knew that already.

    Trades can fix things, but they are extremely complicated to make, and typically involve getting stuck with a bad contract in return for improving your team.

    Okay, but plenty of guys get that now. Yeah, and I don't agree with any of them. I would dump Marmol if/when he is about to get $8 million a year.

    He either sucks or he's awesome. There is no in-between with this man. Getting rid of Kerry Wood places another tally in the "sucks" column. If Wood gets hurt next season, and another team is paying him 10m per season for three seasons, this move will no longer suck. I been reading this board for years, and I just remember many of these same posters laughing at other teams for paying relievers 10m per season. Now since it Kerry Wood, everybody is upset and bashing Hendry. You can't wait "if he gets hurt" it will be bad. If you are evaluating the move when its made, it's either good or bad, with injury risk as a factor. If the Cubs trade Jason Marquis for Jake Peavy, and Marquis wins the Cy Young and Peavy slips on a banana peel and breaks his arm, then Hendry made a stupid move?

    Wood at 3/24 would still be a better bet than Demp at 4/55. At least Wood has had more than one season of success in his career. I don't think Wood wants 3 years though, he wants 4 or 5, plus $8 million is too much for a 1 inning guy IMO.

But he knows who the source is, so I'm assuming he knows the gender of the source as well, unless he was only given a title such as "Director of Player Personnel"

    The thing I was looking to find out is from what Donnie told you raisin, is the source a good enough one that, if true, the source would know what he was talking about? Meaning, its not like the Padres team janitor that overheard something, but its like a person who is in the know.

    You had to know that going in. What was Raisin going to say? I absolutely without a doubt vouch for this person and deem that his rumor is 100% fact. Like he said, its a believable story as to how he got the info, but unless there is video or audio proof theres no way to find out for sure.

    I think 75% of relievers in baseball could save 30 games if they were made the closer for an 80+ win team. A lot of them would blow less than 9 of them too. Kevin Hart could probably close 30 games. So yeah.

    I think you are overthinking things. Hendry wanted a closer for insurance in case Kerry leaves and made a stupid move.

    But he has also hosed them Lee for Choi was a salary dump. Not sure that's the best comparison. And Willis et. al for Alfonseca/Clement is debatable. It doesn't matter if it was a salary dump, they still got crappy players back for a very good player. Except Lee wasn't very good when they got him and he's only had one very good season as a Cub. He's been a not at all special first baseman for the vast majority of his career. He's probably been above league average at 1B in 2004, 2005 and 2007 right? Still worth it for Choi, even if he's been overpaid.
