  1. How the hell did this board become so obsessed with freaking North Dakota?
  2. That's just nuts and it was Harvard's first win ever against a ranked team First big game Tommy Amaker has ever won
  3. This. Normally, I'd agree with this line of thinking, but if you add Sheets, that's 3 potential injuries waiting to happen in the rotation (Harden and sadly Zambrano are the others). Also you have to consider the amount of innings Dempster threw last year vs. the previous 3. While it seems great to say we have Marshall if one goes down if 2-3 of them go down, we are all the sudden looking much less formidable. I don't really think you can build your team around the notion of "What happens if 3 of my pitchers get injured at the same time?" Sounds like something people would say about Wood and Prior circa 2005. How well did that work out for us? Harden and Sheets have been injured in every year of their careers (just about). Zambrano showed signs of wear and tear on his arm that lead to small injuries and ineffectiveness in the second half of last year. I'm just saying adding another injury prone pitcher to the rotation is a bad idea because it increases the odds that we will have to go 7-8 deep in our starting rotation.
  4. The game tonight was even uglier. At least the second half. The only difference was the officials didn't call fouls every other possession. IU threw some of the goofiest passes I've ever seen. Devan Dumes made some of the worst decisions I've ever seen. And really my point wasn't to discuss Iowa. I know you think they stink. They very may well stink although they'll win at least 6 Big Ten games. I'm just wondering how Illinois losing by 10 to such a bad Michigan team fits in. Stuff happens. Maybe the Illini had a bad day, maybe they didn't match up well against the 1-3-1, etc. You absolutely cannot judge a team based on one game, especially in the wacky Big Ten.

  6. I think its pretty obvious that we are not going to know what Michigan is going to show up from game to game. Could it be the UM that beat Duke, UCLA and Illinois or could it be the UM that barely beat Savannah State, barely beat Indiana and lost to Wisconsin? Michigan could beat anyone in the Big Ten but could easily lose to anyone in the Big Ten. That sounds like a slightly below .500 Big Ten record to me. No NCAA Tourney :( Shucks, I've been waiting 11 years for one.
  7. Every year, I get excited for the various all star games, and every year after like 2 minutes I get bored. I have absolutely no idea why this happens to me every year and I don't learn but it does. Although baseball is the best of the bunch. Last year's all star game was probably the most enjoyable one to watch in years, but it was probably because Dempster and Marmol got to pitch in huge situations, and because for once we thought it might actually matter a lot to the Cubs.
  8. That seems optimistic to me. Last I read the Padres weren't even putting Peavy on the market anymore. This article makes it seems like the market is closing but they are still listening to offers and will discuss things with teams like the Cubs.
  9. That should hopefully change once they get a chance to beat up on each other. But then again, they have a lot more gimmies (South Florida, DePaul) than the Big 10 has.
  10. Thread title was such a tease, and I know I'm not the only one that thought it was a different Patterson.
  11. As much as it sucks to hear this as a fan, but immediate player acquisitions, especially those that can be resolved after the ownership situation is completed are trivial to both the Trib Co and the prospective buyers.
  12. I agree there are just very few gimmies on the schedule. I spent 20 minutes yesterday looking through Michigan's schedule trying to figure out where 10 wins are going to come from. At least the home court advantage in the Big Ten isn't as bad as it was maybe 2-3 years ago. Very solid conference top to bottom. It makes for fun basketball, but it sucks for me because I just want to see Michigan in the tourney and I don't think it's going to happen.
  13. It's like the Hawks want to ensure that they will never get themselves into a shootout situation again.
  14. It was added to the banned list after McGwire was found with it. Yeah, it wasn't illegal PED use, but he was using PEDs that are no longer allowed which contributed to his 580+ HRs. He's not guilty of illegally using them from the info we know, but his numbers can be called into question based on what he's admitted to using. ex post facto? Sorta, I'm not saying based on what we know is true we can admonish the guy, but in historical context we can lessen the significance of his numbers based on evidence that he used PED's that we know hold to be illegal. Sort of like how we give extra credit to those hitters that played in the 60's for lesser numbers in a pitchers era with a higher mound in use. Of course there's also the dark cloud of steroids use that we can't prove yet if ever.

  16. BTW, if Andro is a banned substance, then technically doesn't think prove that McGwire was using PEDs when he was playing?
  17. He'll always be a Cub in our hearts.
  18. I heard Harden is very injury prone though. OK, sorry horrible joke
  19. I'd love to see them go for Greinke or something
  20. Speaking of Cuban, he had really long blog post today about his involvement in the sale of the Cubs. Not sure if it's worth its own thread, so I'll just post the link here: http://blogmaverick.com/2009/01/06/the-cubs/
  21. Too bad he just signed a contract extension!
  22. Jacque Jones wasn't bad that season. .285/.334/.499 108 OPS+ I think he's just worried about him starting off slow and then going insane when the fans get on him.
  23. In his defense, the reffing was awful both ways, Illinois just got a little bit worse end of it than Michigan. They weren't calling anything under the basket, and I'm not sure which team that helped or hurt more. Helped out Michigan more. I couldn't believe there were no fouls called during some of the action in the 2nd half after Illinois misses
